World Health Organization Says Coronavirus Not at Pandemic Levels “Yet”

February 24, 2020 By: El Jefe Category: Healthcare

Nothing says, “I’ve got this,” like Bruce Aylward of the World Health Organization discussing the Coronavirus outbreak in a goddam medical exposure mask:

Today, the WHO gave a briefing saying that the Coronavirus outbreak COVID-19 has not reached pandemic level -yet.  But there is a large outbreak now in South Korea and Italy. China has tried to tamp down concern for the growing crisis, and that has certainly not been helpful.  COVID-19 sounds like a ComicCon convention name, but no, it’s not that fun.  This whole thing gives me the willies.

  1. Jane & PKM says:

El Jefe, not sure about that optic. It does promote a medical prophylactic, while not exactly promoting any “we got this” confidence. We’re concerned, not scared. For instance we would not risk our sons to the exposure of a trip to Las Vegas. If we must go to the ‘international’ airport in Reno, we might consider masks for ourselves and we’re not in a considered vulnerable risk group, ie elderly, immunocompromised, etc.

Similarly seeing Donnie* and Messy in India doesn’t inspire confidence. Who would take medical advice from the ***king moron* observed gazing into a solar eclipse without eye protection?

  2. I don’t wish anything bad on India, but it would be poetic justice if the Trumps got the virus while they’re traveling. And then they infected the entire White House administration when they returned.

(Ah, a girl can dream, can’t she?)

I’m really concerned about the population of N. Korea; no contact with the Outside World, and god only knows what’s happening there now.

  4. The thing that spooks me as an ordinary citizen are the what ifs. A lot of stuff that is essential, like medication, medical supplies, etc. for example are made overseas (India comes to mind). If maufacturing and shipping are seriously interrupted, things could get ugly for people everywhere. I am already rethinking vacation plans that involve flying.

    AK Lynne @ 2,

Sure, what’s a few cases of Corona for the Senate and WH staff?

But does it give you the willies on a scale comparable to Cardinal Glick’s remedy for the Crucifix? What or who is the equivalent of the Buddy Christ?
Although the pic of Aylward suggests he’s working on the hand signals already, while hiding behind the mask until he perfects that high school-hero-turned-used-car-salesman smile.
    Kelly Anne Conway?

  6. For what it’s worth, I know some of the people at WHO that deal with emergencies such as this. They are really good at their jobs.

  8. The Surly Professor says:

Jane&PKM: as you’ve doubtless heard, washing hands thoroughly is vastly more effective than face masks. But if you do get them, make sure they are N95 compliant.

Working at a large mid-Western university, the after-Christmas-break season is the worst. Students fly all over the world, then return like modern plague rats to crowded classrooms and labs that are heated and closed off from outside air. Still, in 40 years I’ve only had the flu once, mainly because I wash hands everytime after touching door knobs, hand rails, or table surfaces.

It is true that the Wicked Witch of the West would recoil at the sight of my hands, even using lotion afterwards everytime. But I gave up on a career as a hand model long ago. Plus, since the WWW works for Trump now at the Dept of Education, I like the idea of her staying well away.

  9. Stephanie Baumeister says:

I work in a hospital, so the mask doesn’t bother me. For me it suggests he’s been HIMSELF possibly exposed and is protecting US… which is his job. So… go, Bruce!

  10. I would bet that certain evidence of deaths and new cases are being concealed, molly for political/$$$ reasons. That sounds like something straight out of Hell, but frankly, the media accounts of the Spanish flu were also jiggered over a period of time.
