Let’s Talk About This

Is Trump gonna pardon himself?  His family? I don’t think he knows.  He’ll just blurt it out or he won’t.

Whatever he does, it won’t make sense and he’ll never admit to a mistake.

  1. He won’t pardon himself or any of his family because he doesn’t think they’ll pay.

    1
  2. I’ve read that he has already been “warned” about trying to pardon himself, however, and I speak about people arrested by the FBI, nothing made mention of pardoning, in advance, people who have not yet been tried and or convicted.

Sounds like a pardon debit card. “Trump said “I’m clean” 3 weeks ago. Anyone?

Predicting tRump? Busily trying to ignore him for the final 24 hours until President Biden and Vice President Harris can begin reversing the damage.

But if you’d like a Las Vegas sports book pick your battle on who will take down tRump first. Current odds 50-50

    1. New York State Attorney Leticia James
    2. The Palm Beach neighbors who are less than thrilled at the idea of Donnie and Messy as permanent neighbors

This is interesting from Mitch reported in several news outlets. He said that Trumpf fed his followers lies about the election and provoked the attack on the capital. Perhaps he was giving Trumpf a not so subtle suggestion that if he wants to avoid conviction in the senate, maybe he should resign today. Doubt that will happen but it would give pence the ability to pardon him for at least some of his crimes. I believe this is a bad day for Trumpf. Hoping.

  5. Mitch McConnell said today he believes Trump’s speech provoked the insurrection. That might tip the scales when The Donald next consults his daisy oracle. (I pardon me, I pardon me not…)

  6. The Surly Professor says:

Trump has been told that if he pardons any of his co-conspirators, they can be compelled to testify against him at grand jury time. No Fifth Amendment shield for them. Plus if they refuse to cough up the goods, they can be put into jail (not prison) for as long as it takes to change their alleged minds.

Generally jail is vastly worse than prison. No educational programs, no “jobs” like handling laundry or pressing license plates. There is literally nothing to do. And if you’re stuck in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, cockroaches in the food and rats biting you at night are standard. [This is the one reason I think it’s possible Epstein really did kill himself – it’s the closest America has to the Lubyanka in Moscow]. The guards are not disinterested – they are actively sadistic and especially enjoy tormenting white collar crooks.

Can anyone see Don Jr., Ivanka, or Stephen Miller holding out on testimony for several months in those conditions? They’d roll over on Trump as soon as they hear the cell doors slamming.

BTW, I think it is abysmal that the US has allowed such conditions to fester, especially in jail where a large percentage are people who have not been convicted of any crime, but instead are waiting trial because they can’t make bail. At the same time, none of the Trump Crime Family have ever spoke in favor of prison reform, and if anything Trump fantasizes about roughing up suspects. His rush to kill everyone on death row shows how much empathy he has. So if they are faced with the worst the US legal system has to offer … I’m all out of sympathy for them.

If you accept a pardon, you’ve pleading guilty. That removes his fifth amendment rights going forward. If I were his lawyer – God forbid! – I’d advise not pardoning and taking your chances.

Please Lord, let Big Daddy Cheddarhead try to pardon himself, on national tv. A 1 hour prime time spot should do it, right in the middle of whatever is popular on FOX.

I promise I will be foreverafter good, and kind, and brave, just like it say in the bibble. Please Lord, just this once, pander to me, instead of he!

    Signed, your faithful follower, Charles.

p.s. Can we start “foreverafter” the Monday after Super Sunday? I got some last minute sinning to do, thanx!

Sorta off-topic, but … the NYT has an interactive that lists (almost) all of Trump’s Twitter insults over the past 5 years. It’s sorta entertaining to go to, e.g., Obama’s category, and see how many of them apply to Trump himself:

    https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/01/19/upshot/trump-complete-insult-list.html#

There’s a link that lets you sort chronologically instead. I’m sorta sorry that JJ herownself is not listed … but apparently someone warned Trump that it was just too dangerous to go there.

  12. I think it was Lawrence ODonnell that commented that Trump could issue pardons secretly and they would only become public knowledge when charges were issued. That to me is very scary. I sincerely hope that Biden will address and revise the pardon power so no other Trump type could use it.

I also cannot help but feel that the courts will be involved over the next year on these pardons that were brokered. Even if Trump received no money–and who believes that?–it sounds like someone who approached Trump was getting some quid pro quo for securing the pardons.

    12
  13. Good question JJ! As a card carrying malignant narcissist, with his level of acute psychosis, he’s greater then god and everything Trump says and does is ‘perfect. So pardoning himself would fatally admit he’s flawed.
But on the other hand, depends on how much money or how big a statute Putin will build him if he wants him to.

  14. Grandma Ada says:

Lawrence O’Donnell reminded everyone last night that if he does pardon himself, he doesn’t have to announce it. He may never announce it unless he is charged and only then can we work through a self pardon.

  15. Jane & PKM says:

Meanwhile it appears, if the story is true, Donnie appears to have given up but is positioning Princes Sparkletwat for a run in 2024. Tacit admission that he’s toast. Probable hint he won’t self pardon. Or not.

That list may give Moscow Mitch a wake-up call or not. Stay tuned …

  16. john in denver says:

    Wyatt_Earl @7 …

Those pardoned lose protection from self-incrimination on the specific charges or broader matters covered in the granting document … but could maintain their testimony could expose them to state charges, and thus ought to be protected by the 5th.

In addition, they can remain silent WITHOUT pleading the 5th … and take their chances on Congress, the Courts, or federal law enforcement taking them to trial for contempt. Pardons aren’t a truth telling spell that forced Jim Carrey out of his lawyerly habit in “Liar, Liar.”

    16
  17. Jane & PKM @3,
I don’t think Messy is going to be a permanent resident at Mar a Lago or anywhere else close to 45**. I bet she and Barron are gone before summer.

    17
  18. treehugger says:

I understand that Trump has been discouraged from pardoning his family and himself because he would have to specify in the pardon what crimes were committed. You can’t just pardon someone “just in case.”

  19. WSJ reports Trump has discussed starting his own party, the Patriot Party. That will make things interesting for Republicans.
