Beto

August 07, 2019 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Bubba and I were sitting at the ballgame last night and during the 7th inning stretch, we got to talking about Beto O’Rourke sassing Trump and then Trump telling him to shuddup.

My thought was that Beto should drop out of the presidential race and come home to knock the crap out of John Cornyn.  You know, make a big announcement – say something like I never should have have left my beloved Texas, so I’m coming home to make mincemeat of John Cornyn.

Look, we currently don’t have a candidate running for the Democratic nomination who can beat Cornyn. Hell, most of them can’t even beat each other in the primary.  MJ Hegar is a great candidate but she doesn’t have the name ID to win statewide in Texas.  Royce West – don’t even get me started – let’s just say I don’t trust him as far as I can throw him and he’s a big guy. Chris Bell came in fifth place in Houston’s mayoral race three years ago and then endorsed the Republican in the run off.  As we say – he’s dead man running.

So there’s mealy mouthed Cornyn who’s held that seat so long he has orthopedic campaign promises.  Take away that guy’s fringe leather jacket and he ain’t got an ounce of Texan in him.

So, Bubba and I pretty much agreed that we’d email Beto’s campaign and tell them to come the hell home and whip up on Cornyn.

It ain’t too late.  And I know that because this morning because the Dallas Morning News did some polling.

Forty-six percent of voters said O’Rourke should drop out of the presidential race and run for Senate, while 25% said he should keep running for president and 29% weren’t sure. About 51% of Democrats said O’Rourke should run for Senate instead of the White House.

And then there’s this from all Texans:

The news is not great for Cornyn, the powerful incumbent who’s held the seat since 2003. Only 37% approved of his job performance, while 31% disapproved. The polls found that 33% of Texans were neutral or had no opinion.

The Morning News suggests that O’Rourke may be polling behind Biden in Texas because Texan Democrats want him to come home and run against Cornyn.

We are an unforgiving bunch, we Texas Democrats.

He’d better listen to you and Bubba, if he knows what’s good for him!

Have to agree that Beto should change his goal.

Even with a bump from his recent El Paso actions, he’s not going to be in the top 5 in the Prez nom race. He would stand a pretty good chance against Cornyn compared to any others.
Although I greatly favor [fmr AF Maj] M.J. Hegar. She could probably quickly overcome any name/visibility’ deficiencies, leaving just a perceived ‘experience’ shortfall. Hegar has true leadership qualities to spare.

One drag on any Dem against Cornyn is that Cornyn’s ‘negatives’ are no where near as bad as DetesTed Cruz’ were/are, in a still very red state.

  3. Yup. Exactly. He needs to drop out before the next debate. That may also prod Inslee and some of the others to run for the Senate instead of continuing their futile quests for the White House. They’d be wise to do this ASAP before getting embarrassed by not qualifying for the next debate.

Beto, it is not just Texas Democrats. Democrats all over understand the importance of a Democratic Senate. Getting rid of Moscow Mitch as majority leader is high on our list. You sir, have a great chance of defeating Cornyn. So please, take one for the team. tia

  5. My wife and I totally agree. From the day he announced it seemed all about Vanity and his chances barely Fair. Two years building a state wide organization and he decides to move to Iowa? I like most of the D candidates, but someone needs to stay in the Senate. I hope he does listen to you.

  6. This. Please.

    OT suggestion:
Given that the price of crude oil has been seriously falling [approaching $50-sub51 now], if you need to fill up your vehicle tank[s], you might hold off to next week if possible. Pump prices may be under $2/gal [here in S TX] by then.
I was going to fill up, now I’ll just put in half today at most [it’s almost empty after some big city trips].

BTW, I’ve started going ‘EV’, with a [so far] great electric battery powered lawn tractor. What a fantastic difference from the old gas tractor, no gas/oil, belts, filters, fumes, engine heat and noise, etc. Just smooth, quiet power, then plug it into an outlet and recharge it for less than 25 cents [a gas cut job runs $2-3].
Now if there were some affordable BEV/PHEV SUVs and pickups…

    7
  8. I’ll vote for that.

He can have my house again for a BnB for out of town workers and a pop up office. From now til election day.

I’ll even forgive him for running for POTUS. Talk about pissing in the wind.

Why would any Democrat want to be President if Moscow Mitch is still Senate majority leader? Imagine getting Senate approval for – anything. It’d be miserable.

  10. @BetoORourke
    I’ll be tweeting him
    again
Texas and the country need him in the Senate
we can vote for him for potus later, after the Senate has reverted into Democratic hands
we have to staunch the wound before more damage is done

    10
  11. Well, if our senior senator from MA wants to keep her current position, I wouldn’t mind…

    11
  12. thatotherjean says:

I absolutely agree with you. Beto isn’t going to be our next president, and isn’t likely to wind up as vice president, either. I wish he’d go home and become the next Democratic Senator from Texas, which it seems likely that he could be. Spend some time in the US Senate, Mr. O’Rourke, and help turn it blue. There’s time later for another presidential run.

    12
  13. I agree that the declared Dem candidates are underwhelming, but there’s an undeclared candidate – Cristina Tzintzun-Ramirez – who is planning to get in, and she excites me more than Beto did in the last campaign. She ran the Worker’s Defense Project for a number of years prior to founding the Jolt Initiative to get out the Latino vote in Texas. She has rock star qualities: smart, charismatic, a terrific public speaker, and a great public story. She has about the same name recognition that Beto had before the race against Cruz. If Beto sticks with the Presidential race, look for Cristina to be the most viable Dem to unseat Cornyn. (See the July 12 Texas Tribune article “Some progressive Democrats are urging a top Latina organizer to run for U.S. Senate” for more on her).

    13
  14. I like Beto – a lot – but he has no chance to win the nomination. And wouldn’t it be wonderful if we Texans had someone who actually represented us in the Senate?

Beto, please. You’re still a young man. Do the right thing.

  15. Sandridge says:

While en route to El Paso, MOFOBOTUS is busy tweeting that Beto O’Rourke ‘is a fake Hispanic’! Damn I hate the bastard.

Yes, Beto is an Anglo, and growing up in a very TexMex Hispanic environment, he assimilated in very well. So well he even earned a Spanish diminutive nickname; which is used/indicative of affection by those bestowing it.
Beto is also noted [among other things] for being extremely fluent in the Spanish language. MOFOBUTUS can only utter utter ‘Bullshit’. [ ;] , hope I got that right]

[Another of your occasional lessons in ‘border culture’ brought to you by an old Anglo SOB who’s spent most of his life on or very near La Frontera de Tejas; yes, sort of fluent too, and even have a nic , or two.]

[Sry, had misposted this on the previous thread, should be here]

    15
  16. I just went to Beto’s campaign website, clicked on the contact button and left a message there, suggesting what everyone here is saying–that he should run for the senate. That email address is info@betoorourke.com, though I suspect it’s really the site for responding to requests for campaign information rather than more personal requests. However, it’s the only one I could find. Maybe if enough of us flood the site, he might get the message. And, I added, I’ve not contributed to his presidential campaign but surely would contribute to a run for the senate.

This is the perfect opportunity to drop out and run for Senate, saying “My state needs me.” Let’s hope he has someone decent advising him.

  18. Jere Armen says:

I agree. I don’t live in TX, so my opinion counts for squat, but if anybody is polling out-of-staters, tell ’em I want Beto to run for Cornyn’s Senate seat. We have to change the majority in the Senate or nothing will continue to get done.

    18
  19. All of these comments are wonderful. I suggest every one of you put them in an email to Beto. I just wrote him with my encouragement to do this and linked to JJ’s column.

  20. Beto should most definitely listen to you. If elected to the senate he could do enormous good. Numerous years in the senate would also give him invaluable experience. Then, in eight years after the incoming two-term Democratic president (please God), he would be in a much better position to successfully run for president.

Same with Peter Buttigieg. Both of them should both drop out the overcrowded and unwinnable field and run for senate seats.

    20
  21. Tom Westrup says:

I agree. Here in CO I have sent a message to Hickenlooper to drop out and run against Gardner. I also sent a message to Bennett to drop out, go back to the senate and help others (e.g. Hickenlooper) take control of the Sentate. 87.5% of Congress is up for election in 2020, let’s do something!

    21
  22. Grandma Ada says:

More people vote in Presidential election years – he would have a good chance at Cornyn’s seat

    22
  23. Not just Beto but Bullock from Montana, Hickenloper from Colorado and perhaps one or two others who could win in either red/purple states but have decided their ego’s are more important then the working for the common good.

    23
  24. Skepticat says:

    YES

    24
  25. Susan Crites says:

News came out in the past week here in Colorado that one of Hickenlooper’s campaign guys bought up a batch of Hick for Senate website names. In interviews Hick said he’s still trying, but the lure of going up against the weakest R senator out there has got to be pretty strong.

    25
  26. #3 BarbinDC: Washington State already has two Dem senators (Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell). I can see Inslee in the cabinet – EPA or Interior perhaps – after we boot the orangeman.

Yes, for Hickenlooper in CO and Bullock in MT. And Beto in TX. It’s absolutely essential that Dems take back the Senate.

    26
  27. @ Hannah # 26
and maybe Wa. AG Fergusan as new US AG?

    27
  28. Actually, JJ, thats a draw good idea. With what happened at El Paso and all the jailed babies in Texas, the state really, really needs Beto’s abilities now more than ever right on home ground. I hope he listens to you and does a turnaround right soon!
