We Gotta Sleep With One Eye Open And The Other On Alert

March 21, 2020 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Y’all, Bill Barr is a very scary man.  According to Politico, he’s now asked for some extraordinary powers.

The Justice Department has quietly asked Congress for the ability to ask chief judges to detain people indefinitely without trial during emergencies — part of a push for new powers that comes as the coronavirus spreads through the United States.

Documents reviewed by POLITICO detail the department’s requests to lawmakers on a host of topics, including the statute of limitations, asylum and the way court hearings are conducted. POLITICO also reviewed and previously reported on documents seeking the authority to extend deadlines on merger reviews and prosecutions.

I think there are a few liberals in congress who will howl.

Remember when Republicans used to talk about the Constitution?

Thanks to everybody for the heads up.

Be social and share!

Quite a bizarre conjunction, imagining the Constitution being waterlogged by the fat fascist general of the Reichstag and in need of a ventilator to keep it from drowning.

More power? No, Billy Bob. Until the ***king moron* learns to use the powers he already has to provide hospitals with the supplies they need, communities with the testing tools to aid in containing this novel corona virus, there is no ‘up’ side to granting that fool* more power, especially power you and he* blatantly intend to abuse. In fact, Billy Bob, some of us are thinking about fewer powers. How about no more federal judge appointments for Donnie*? Like Moscow Mitch told us in the last presidential election cycle “let the voters decide this close to an election.” More welfare for large corporations to once again misuse on stock buy backs instead of employee benefits. Uh no.

Looks like Nancy Pelosi may get to be the one who saves America. Hate to think where we would be with out her.

I wonder if the unlimited detention would apply to Mr. Barr. Or Mr. Trump.–a lot easier than impeachment.

  5. BarbinDC says:

This makes no kind of sense. They want to be able to put MORE people in jail, while a lot of other people are working to empty jails and prisons of non-violent offenders because they are the equivalent of cruise ships when it comes to spreading this virus around. They truly are the mole people.

Hate to be a Negative Nelly but isn’t this right out of the NAZI playbook?

    6
  7. Precedent. That’s what this is about. Barr knows there’s not a snowball’s chance in hell Pelosi will let this happen. He did it “quietly”. To ensure it was reported in the “liberal” media. Now it’s public record.
When bad things beyond anybody’s control start happening as a result of a global pandemic catastrophe, Stephen Goebbels Miller will saturate the intertubes with how Barr tried to save the world with his heroics, but that nasty Nancy Pelosi stabbed us in the back. Precedent.

    7
  8. Consistent with thuglicans theory that any of the “poors” who can’t afford bail should get a death sentence.
Prisons and detention centers are the perfect environment to act as petri dishes to incubate this disease.

  9. Jane & PKM says:

P.P., Billy Bob Barr destroyed his own credibility during the HW Pappy Bush years. If he thinks hanging around the ***king moron* will change that for him, he really is dumber than he looks. Oh yeah and yes please, to either Goebbels-Miller or Billy Bob trying to lay their soap off on Speaker Pelosi. Watching her eat both of their lunches and sending them the drying cleaning bill for the napkins should be most entertaining. Both of them deserve the “short straw” as to who gets to tell Donnie* to follow CDC protocol so that he* quits wasting scarce resources on the continued retesting of his* own dumb a$$.

  11. Almost forgot.
Repugnantcans talk about the Constitution all the time. Unfortunately the only actual part they care about is the second amendment. The rest of it IMHO is protecting us from people like Barr. MAGA’S trust people like Barr to foxsplain how he’s using his constitutional power to protect them from liberals. Like Pelosi.
    And us.

It’s the Shock Doctrine all over again. When things get rough, the current administration can push through powers that they could never get under normal circumstances by pretending that their dictatorial wish list was for national security. Tell them no. Tell all your legislators no. This is exactly the same principle Bush/Cheney used to push through the abomination that was The Patriot Act.

    12
  13. Teh Gerg says:

And let’s also not forget that Bush/Cheney used Americans’ shock after 9/11 to push through a ton of bills that had stood no chance of getting through Congress previously. There were dozens.

  14. Jane & PKM @9:
I agree with everything y’all said @9. Totally.
But we (y’all, me, and everybody else in this joint) live in the real world. And unfortunately a massive number of our fellow citizens live in this alternate reality created and nurtured by White nationalists for over a century. And their votes count as much as ours.

    14
  15. Not a peep from the remnants of the Tea Party. Or Sarah Palin shrieking about Founding Fathers & the Constitution. Guess it was just a passing phase & they’re all into rap music now.

  17. Jane & PKM says:

P.P., wish we knew the numbers for the success rates in state by state efforts to claw back voting rights for those who have been subjected to every manner of Republicon skullduggery to disenfranchise them. That an added edge in Blue states for a national vote by mail election experience might just provide the opportunity to demonstrate to the white nationalists that are not the big group they’d like to think they are. Even extrapolating from the data showing a significant rise in the number of hate groups, their ‘share’ of the populace is actually declining. Last look CA had 88 hate groups; guess that accounts for the miserable sorts in Orange County who hate everyone and probably belong to 20 groups each. It is just such a travesty and embarrassment those idiots still think they have legitimacy.

Still SMDH on how SCROTUS back in 1977 totally booted the entire National Socialist Party of America/Skokie question and the opportunity to tell the KKK where to depart this Earth. Now all the racists and “Jews will not replace us” crazies are especially loud and obnoxious.

And remember how those newbies tried to take her down when the session started — claiming that “new blood” was needed?

I’m betting they’re thanking their lucky stars, right about now, that they didn’t succeed.

    20
  21. Yeah, the white nationalists I’m referring to are the Koch:s, the Cato Institute, the NRA, the federalist society, etc.
What passes for mainstream conservatism today. Radicals who’ve normalized facism.

  22. Off topic, random weekend news – – Hobby Lobby remains open because the owner’s wife had a vision from God. And the $6.4 billion couple have told their employees they better get ready for some belt tightening. Probably because God helps those who help themselves?

  23. Another off topic subject, but an ABC poll indicates that Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the pandemic by a 55 to 43 percent margin. Unbelievable how short people’s memories can be. Here is a reminder of how well this has been handled:

  24. Jane & PKM says:

P.P. …. “them” as we say about the Kochs and the John Birch Society, or how far we have sunk when “liberal” is a swear word while “Libertarian” has been strangely normalized. In their eyes only, because what sane person can look at Rand or Ron Paul and think “normal”?

Perfect Rick! Prime example anyway, with Hobby Lobby, the Greens and what the take over the courts crazies plan for our long term insanity. Reagan’s ‘legacy.’ Open the insane asylums and create the ‘new’ Republicon Party. What’s that sound? I think it’s Goldwater, laughing at us.

    24
  25. Jane & PKM says:

Mark, was there one question in that poll to indicate how many times the respondents had been hospitalized for schizophrenia or similar symptoms? Seriously. The numbers of COVID-19 cases, medical personnel without proper PPE, dearth of test kits, and Donnie’s* promises of a vaccine (soon) cobbled together from every drug the FDA ever declared lethal, yet his* approval ratings are not in the negative range. This is going real well; Donnie’s* a true genius … like there’s a second virus affecting people that no one is talking about, crazy.

  27. Once Republicans realize they can postpone elections, we’re doomed.

    27
  28. RepubAnon says:

For Republicans, the Constitution’s restrictions on Executive branch power are like deficits: only binding on Democrats.

If Trump got these powers, he’d promptly imprison anyone criticizing him. Look at the World War 1 cases about “clear and present danger” for how that works.
