  1. Brad in Dallas says:

OMG what a great lady. No question McConnell will jump to fill it the f’ing hypocrite.

    1
  2. I bet that the orange trumpig and his rePUKEian cronies will try really hard to put their ahole in place before Nov. Hey! DEMs! Get some balls and stop him!!!! like they stopped Obama!!

    2
  3. From NPR: Just days before her death, as her strength waned, Ginsburg dictated this statement to her granddaughter Clara Spera: “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.”

There is only one true way to honor and respect the “Notorious RBG” for her years of dedicated public service. We must do everything possible to grant her dying wish.

    3
  4. There is no doubt in my mind that she did everything she could to hang on until the election. As a DC resident, she didn’t even get the chance to vote in this election. This just sucks so bad, I can’t even find the words.

    5
  5. Though Trump is not able to think into even into the near future, but some in the White House and their handlers at the Federalist Society have a road map with the name of the nominee and game plan for cramming him or her into that seat FAST. This will; be ugly, McC will be his bullshitting self, I shutter at what’s ahead. We need about 4 GOP senators with a conscience to finally emerge. Collins might be able to save her seat if she defies McC but she won’t.

  6. Steve from Beaverton says:

A sad day for all of RBG’s family and all of us.
I am awaiting the hypocritical thoughts and prayers from Trumpf, Pence, Mitch, Barr……
As Sam from Superior said in the the string below, they may use this as a campaign strategy to bring out the repugnantican vote and string it along until after the election. I agree. I hope that strategy works to also bring out the dem vote. Anyone imagine Ted Cruz or Tom Cotton as a SCJ????Lots of things at stake led by women’s rights.
The sharks are circling in the repugnantican senate. What Mitch does the next 2 weeks will tell a lot. If he aggressively pushes a replacement before the election tells me they are very worried Trumpf will lose along with their senate majority.

    7
  7. Her shoes will be hard to fill, even if Biden gets the opportunity to do so.

    8
  8. they don’t have to dit before november, l.long. they have all the way until january.

my money is on trump/mcconnell waiting until after the election and appointing/confirming during the lame duck session.

    10
  9. Thank you fierce one. For all your troubles and toil to make our nation more fair and just.

    11
  10. thatotherjean says:

The year 2020 just got immeasurably worse. Thank you, Justice Ginsberg, for being a force for good, a remarkable person, and a dedicated Supreme Court Justice. We will do all that can be done to carry out your last wish.

US folks–call your Senators and let them know what you want–for them to fight Mitch McConnell every step of the way he wants to go for the Supreme Court.

    12
  11. Winter is coming.

    13
  12. A dark day.
    For the Ginsburg family.
    For the American family.
    For the human family.
And considering the ramifications of Supreme Court decisions on climate change legislation,
For the survival of human civilization.
Maybe I’m just being unduly pessimistic.

    14
  13. There has been no death in my family that made me cry more than I did tonight for RBG. I know one thing though. We just have to fight all the more for her and for us.

    15
  14. AK Lynne@15:
    You’re not alone.

    16
  15. AK Lynne@15:
    Ferdamnsure not in this joint.
Speaking for myself, we’re all hurting and worrying.
    We support our own.

    17
  16. My heart is broken. But if we can win the presidency, and the Senate is it true that the constitution allows the appointment of more supreme court justices?

    18
  17. There is only one way that tRump and McTurtle will not ram through some corrupt, reactionary, Heritage-approved benchwarmer to fill the seat of the Notorious RBG, but I am afraid it will require some effort on the part of all of us who are not willing to lose our democracy…

    OCCUPY THE SENATE.

And yes, I do mean physically–hundreds of thousands of like-minded souls blocking every inch of hallway, every legislative chamber, every office; commandeering every desk, every voting machine, every subterranean senatorial subway car; standing before the venal, authoritarian, power-mad Pubbies like Gandalf on the bridge, roaring with one mighty voice, “You shall not pass!” If they arrest one, let ten more take their place. If they attempt to assemble a quorum in another venue, blockade that one as well. If they try to hold a virtual vote, hack their laptops and feed them porno 24-7. If we can muster more than a million for a simple march, as we did the day after Dolt45’s inaugural, surely we can come up with a crowd large enough to keep them out of their hive of scum and villainy. Hey, everyone’s laid off, we’ve got some free time–let’s put it to good use.

    OCCUPY THE SENATE.

    19
  18. Beyond devastated personally and devastating for our nation. If I were physically closer to the Supreme Court, I would have stood with those who were compelled to go there last night out of respect for RBG and the Constitution for which she so ferociously fought.

Know all of you are devastated, too.

    20
  19. Joel @ 10:
I’ll bet you’re right. Then no R has to put their neck on the line before the election and they can put yet another nail in democracy’s coffin before the Senate flips.

McConnell will do whatever he can to stack the court one way or the other.

How to spell ‘”hypocrite” —– M-i-t-c-h–M-c-C-o-n-n-e-l-l

    21
  20. RIP RBG.

    .
And now a lesson in how the Rethugs excel in the use of raw power, and are always in control, in ‘power’ or not.
While Democrats [esp. ‘liberals’] don’t have a clue, and have been utterly dominated whether nominally in ‘power’ or not. For proof just examine the last twelve years of political history: Obama’s failures, Democratic voter’s failures [particularly in 2010 and 2016], “D” Senators weaknesses, Dem ‘messaging, ad infinitum…

To wit, they’re going after it whole hog:
    Donald J. Trump
    @realDonaldTrump
.@GOP We were put in this position of power and importance to make decisions for the people who so proudly elected us, the most important of which has long been considered to be the selection of United States Supreme Court Justices. We have this obligation, without delay!

No, DJT is not an “idiot”, as we delight in thinking. Just listen to Woodward’s interviews with him, not a genius, off-kilter; but hyper-cunning and supremely dangerous. As are his handlers and minions- x10. And always fixated on holding and exercising power, bolding the line and acting in lockstep when it counts.

There’s only one way to correct this:
Win overwhelmingly on November 3rd, particularly the US Senate and Presidency. Then immediately ‘pack’ the Supreme Court with two more Justices.

    22
  21. @Sandridge

I suspect “packing”, especially if done by a Dem president, a Dem Senate, and a Dem house, would come home to roost in 4 or 8 years.

Rather I’d like to see the Judiciary Act of 1869 amended or replaced by a Judiciary Act that ties the number of associate justices to the number of circuits as defined by 28 U.S. Code § 41. Number and composition of circuits. Thus, there are currently 12 circuits, therefore 12 associate justices. After making this change, President Biden should appoint 4 new associate justices. Then as the population increases and new circuits are added, a new associate justice seat would be added to review the work of that new circuit, by operation of this law. Problem solved. Bi-partisan, IMHO.

  22. Alfredo at the Dairy Queen says:

We are now Ruth-less, so we must become ruthless. The definition of “ruthless” is “showing no mercy or compassion.” But it also means to be relentless. Relentless in ensuring that our country lives up to its rhetoric – that all people are created equal. Relentless in removing from office politicians who would make our country more unequal, not less. Relentless in protecting the right to vote, which is the only means by which, we, the people, can change our government if it fails to pursue the American ideal of equality. And, yes, relentless in investigating and prosecuting politicians who abuse their office for their own personal profit.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was relentless in pursing the goal of equality for all Americans regardless of gender. We are now Ruth-less, but we can become relentless.

    We owe her no less.
