TRUMP CAVES (AGAIN)

January 25, 2019 By: El Jefe Category: Shutdown, Trump

Remember that back in June, Trump caved on his cruel and illegal policy of separating children from their parents on the border.  Even though many kids remain separated , the stated strategy of tearing families apart was reversed.  Well, just now, Trump caved again, agreeing to a short term continuing resolution to reopen the government, and it doesn’t include money for his idiotic wall.  What changed?  Public opinion really did start turning as television reports of weeping federal employees hit the air waves.  Then Christopher Wray, director of the FBI, spoke out to all of his employees about how angry he is over the shutdown; the commandant of the Coast Guard spoke out publicly in opposition, and then, the FAA ordered a ground stop this morning at La Guardia airport in New York citing a shortage of controllers to safely move aircraft through our airspace.  Apparently, this was the straw that broke the camel’s back, and the tsunami of opposition to his shutdown FINALLY got through the orange ferret sitting on his head.  And he caved.

Trump is now right back to where he was two weeks before Christmas except that millions of Americans have been injured from his folly and his poll numbers are lower if that was even possible.  Oh, and he lied about how so many federal employees wanted him to keep going on the shutdown which is outrageous.  His “deal” to reopen government is only for 3 weeks.  We’ll see what the Dems do.

The funny thing? Trump did get his wall, and her name is Nancy Pelosi.

Be social and share!

  1. I can’t see how anyone could be surprised at this ending. It was always going to end up here. The only question is how much damage the nation would take before it did.

The important thing to focus on is what happens over the next three weeks. Trump is obviously on the ropes now but he is dumb enough to try a repeat performance unless he gets some “win” that he can claim makes it all worth it. Even if it is totally symbolic.

Is Pelosi willing to give him his symbolic victory or instead just twist the knife? I couldn’t say.

Old Scratch and Donnie can twist in the wind. Speaker Pelosi has already detached their sputniks and placed them under her gavel. One false move on their part and she adds a turtle head to her collection.

Typical bully. All mouth when h s got his crew, a whining coward when the can’t break legs for him. I actually had shirts made just before the election saying Donald Trump Got Beat By A GIRL! Well, I burned them but now wish I hadn’t.

We need more of this. A lot more. I believe Nancy Pelosi will provide. As much as I love the new up and coming Dems I hope they will take the opportunity to learn from an old pro.

  14. I think I will watch Washington Week In Review on PBS tonight. Might be interesting.

Trump is a carnival clown. The entire world laughs at the USA, except Russia which does cartwheels everyday. I am a fair thinker. It is ridiculous to claim that if the Obama campaign was being indicted right and left, Hillary had put her daughter or son-in-law in charge of government business, etc we would not have all been up in arms. I can support conservative values without being blind. Yes, Trump delivered on Supreme Court, and yes he is a vulgar, self-driven politician. Being real wins over people ion the middle. Not clinging to extreme views of our leaders based of fear we look like fools once they are exposed. I have no doubt Trump would have done virtually ANYTHING to win. Colluding with Russians, absolutely! And, yes, I consider that high treason.

    15
  16. Silly, ridiculous man. I say he did this because he had to throw everybody off of the Roger Stone drama and, of course—Nancy kicked his butt.

It must be horrific being Donald Trump everyday.

    16
  17. RepubAnon says:

I figured that air traffic problems would affect bookings at Trump properties, and anger major Republican donors. That, and the need to divert from Stone’s arrest, were likely big factors here. That, and Nancy Pelosi.

    17
  18. You are soooo right, publius. It’s the old “look over here, not over there” routine. The news about Stone’s indictment forced the Un-indicted Co-conspirator to divert attention to his “Plan”.

    18
  19. Jane & PKM says:

Schadenfreude would be Speaker Pelosi stating no SoTU address for you until there’s a full government funding, Donnie. Now STFU and get out of the way, while the adults govern. By “adults govern” no more Old Scratch hiding in his shell while Donnie throws ridiculous tantrums. On deck, Speaker Pelosi teaching Old Scratch how to count votes. The LADY who can track and count votes in the House of 435 will school you on how to reach a mere 67 votes.

  20. Wonder if like Nicolas II that doddering donnie decides a nice little war will help him regain the image of being a strong leader and trys to invade Venezuala?

  21. Susan on the Left Coast says:

There is chit chat from behind the White House curtain that says he only reopened gov’t today with exact deal hammered out last December because….he wants Roger Stone not to be the top of the news. Horrific economic stress put on people and the economy for naught, as we all knew. There are still some voices thinking Trump won’t sign the bill to reopen…sigh.

Funny Friday: The Nixon Foundation put out a public statement that Roger Stone was never an aide or adviser to Nixon, he was only a junior scheduler during the campaign while a student.

By the way: it’s been fun dropping this in right wing comment threads who are so verklempt Roger was FBI Swat walked out of the house and shackled in court. Stone invited the press for an hour and a half of watching him shoot an AK47 at “the feds” he was pretending to shoot at a target range. That would inspire an armed FBI to make an arrest whilst armed, doncha’ think?

Stone, by the by, is supposedly doing a Hannity show tonight. He’s so arrogant and belligerent we can assume he’ll add more fodder to the Mueller files while gushing forth on Hannity.

    21
  22. Something reminded me of a scene in The Lord of the Rings (books or movies) when, in the middle of what’s looking like a hopeless battle, the Nazgul leader of the evil army declares, “No man can kill me!” and the only knight brave enough to stand against him whips off her helmet and replies, ‘I am no man!”

    I dunno… just…. Nancy Pelosi…. (cough)….

    22

  26. Jan says: “I think I will watch Washington Week In Review on PBS tonight.”

But first Jan, see if you can get through listening to longtime Repub tool Judy Woodruff on the PBS NewsHour first. She twisted and spun for the Rethugs tonight almost like she was a Sarah Huckster Sanders clone.

(I stopped donating to PBS when they rolled over for the Cheney-Bush cabal, they’re even worse now. Woodruff the Newshour producers seem to be the worst of the lot now.)

    26
  27. Beststash says:

Really glad to see Trump CAVE – not matter what he says there will not be another shutdown. The ATC or TSA agents will walk out and he knows it. Not sure about the National Emergency thing. “He messed with a SF Dem with a steel spine”

@Sandridge…I really like Judy Woodruff and also PBS Newshour for my nightly news. I appreciate their calmness and not talking over each other-unlike CNN or CNBC, etc. Especially Shields and Brooks on Fridays. Do you have any preferences you would care to share?

    27
  28. Rhea for the win!
That sequence in the book made a gianormous impact on me at the age of about 16. Eowyn was a BADASS.
I don’t know who would be a comparative character to Merry stabbing the Witch-king in his knee.

Also Chris Hayes pointed out that LaGuardia airport is where the Golgothan’s private jet is kept. So when his shutdown appeared to possibly effect him or his family, he suddenly acknowledges the pain felt as a result of his douchebagery.
    Who’da thunk it?

    28
  29. Beyond all the current kerfluffel and getting back to the underlying basics of ‘modern’ Republicanism and the Trump regime, y’all should try and watch at least this one episode of this illuminating PBS series.

It will be on at 9PM CST tonight on many PBS channels. Check your local PBS one for details; it will rerun several times in different timeslots and on subchannels in future (I watched it a few days ago).

It deals with Benito Mussolini. The Italian Fascist dictator who wrote the modern playbook for the rest.
Even Hitler learned most of his Fascist craft from Mussolini’s then recent exploits. Mussolini even essentially held the Vatican, a sovereign nation, and the Roman Catholic Pope, captive for a time.

The parallels with our own Mango Mussolini in the WH are amazing. While Benito was a far more intelligent critter than generally given credit for, he still ended up swinging upside down from a meathook…

    https://www.pbs.org/show/dictators-playbook/

    https://www.pbs.org/video/benito-mussolini-pluih0/

    “THE DICTATOR’S PLAYBOOK
    Benito Mussolini
    Episode 3 | 54m 11s

See why Benito Mussolini was considered a pioneer among 20th century dictators. From undermining judges to indoctrinating children, he forged key tactics for seizing power. He also created fascism, an ideology that would plunge Europe into darkness.”

“Learn how six dictators, from Mussolini to Saddam Hussein, shaped the 20th century. How did they seize and lose power? What forces were against them? Learn the answers in these six immersive hours, each a revealing portrait of brutality and power.”

    29
  30. Beststash @27,
While I continue to watch the PBS news programs for most of my TV ‘news’, never watching the other OTA (no cable/sat, wouldn’t pay for it anyway) networks (except for the Sunday crapfests), I have learned to be very discerning about it.
You too should approach Ms. Woodruff with a bit more of a critical eye, she’s become an R tool over the years.
Her Republican bias has become quite obvious over many years (IMO). She is often very accommodating and asks softball questions of Rethug guests, while showing hostility and rapidfire biased questions to Democratic ones.
Of course her presentations also reflect the underlying bias of the show’s producers too, who sometimes do quite masterful propaganda duty on behalf of the Rethugs. There are many subtle factors to all of this, like chronological placement (Rs almost always lead off, Ds cut off), time alloted (Ds almost always get less), etc.

  31. The Honorable Madam Speaker Pelosi has proven once again that size is no indication of courage. That small woman is far more moral and brave than the big, fat, tiny-handed slob know as Tantruming Toddler. She is my hero. He is an insane, cruel criminal.

  33. New name for Madam Speaker Pelosi — “Classy Nancy.” (Lawrence Tribe)

    The Twitterverse is alight tonight!

    33
  34. @Sandridge – Thanks for the insight, I’ll look with a more skeptical eye. I guess I’m pretty much mesmerized when I see ladies like Judy and Amanpour rule the journalism airwaves. Yeah, Baby!

    Peace and Love

    34
  35. All hail the Empress of the Universe, Nancy Pelosi!!!!

    Seriously!

    35
  36. WA Skeptic says:

Hey, Donnie: that’s “Madam Speaker” to you, you creep.

    36
  37. “Neutering Nancy”, Debbo. (Thanks to Stephen Colbert.)

    37
  38. Jane & PKM says:

The articulate Speaker of the House did a fine job of disarticulating Donnie.

Debbo, AK Lynne, “Classy Nancy” is certainly well deserved as is also “Neutering Nancy.” With the advances of the #MeToo movement combined with the target in this instance, Dotard45, there’s no negative connotation with the phrase. Cheers, applause and a 99.9% approval rating for Neutering Nancy. While Donnie is probably too st00pid to learn from the experience, it had to made an impression on Old Scratch McConnell. Schumer, too; bet he doesn’t give anything in negotiations on anything ever without consulting Speaker Pelosi.

And now to modify an old WWII submarine phrase:

    Hit ’em again, Nancy!

  41. Susan on the Left Coast says:

From Twitterverse: “As she left her table at a Washington restaurant Friday night, the staff cheered and applauded Nancy Pelosi. What a week she had had. Said a waitress in near tears,”We need someone who will fight for us.”

The Left Coasters are immensely proud of our tenacious warrior woman in high heels!

    41
  42. Jane & PKM says:

K, the religious zealot wing of the fascist party loves their shiny object Donnie. He keeps the media entertained and distracted while his maladministration does their dirty work.

    https://crooksandliars.com/2019/01/ginni-thomas-storms-oval-office-bullies

A primary challenge to IQ45 for the RNC could mean a serious clash between the religious nuts and the economic fascists severely dividing the party endangering both control of the Senate and the WH. Democratic control of the House has them scared. Let’s hope Speaker NDP scares them into a coma in time for a 2020 Democratic sweep.

    42
  43. Susan on the Left Coast says:

Pelosi’s official statement re: the indictment of Roger Stone
    https://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/12519-4/

FYI: “House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has yet to appoint new Republican members to the now-Democratic-controlled House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, thereby holding back Democratic members from investigating President Donald Trump and his family members.” https://tinyurl.com/y9zyr5w5

(McCarthy is furious his title is “minority leader” and wants to be called “Republican Leader” Ummm, nope!)

    43
  44. If they go ahead with the coronation ( maybe hire DWS to orchestrate it she likes thuglicans and has worked to protect them in the past) just think of the target rich political landscape with the thuglicans tied to demented donnie as their nominee.
Support him and they lose everyone to the left of jerry falwell. Don’t support him and the “true beleivers” will crucify any thuglican balsphemer who would act the role of judas ( in their mind).
All we need is a good solid 50 state project that challenges every seat with the DNC/DCCC/DSCC not putting their thumb on the scale to protect thuglicrats like lipinski, cuellar and munchkin.
Plus the campaign committees must be forced to support progressive who win their nomination.

    44
  45. Jane & PKM says:

Susan on the Left Coast, Speaker Pelosi has been a little busy attending to spankings for Donnie and Mitch, while organizing the House to govern. Figure little Kevin will be next, if he attempts to derail House business by default in not appointing his caucus to committees. Bets that Monday morning at the latest he finds his little sputniks about to be gaveled to order?

    45
  46. Aggieland Liz says:

@AK Lynne, yes, sometime last week the order approving backpay for the furloughed workforce was approved. In an update, most of them should see paychecks sometime this week. One of my sisters (NASA) and one of my neighbors (USDA) were caught in this mess, and I’ve been paying pretty close attention. My sister was in good shape moneywise, but I was a bit concerned about my neighbor and was trying to figure out how to get him an H-E-B gift card without him knowing it was from me; he’s a really nice guy. Am 100% behind Warner’s STUPIDITY bill. This hostage taking is so much idiocy.

    46
  47. Gail in Richmond, VA says:

Let him do the “national emergency” thing. Courts need the work. He needs more humiliation.

This isn’t how it turned out in “Atlas Shrugged”.

    48
  49. @Jane & PKM #42, As for waiting for the GOP to fracture between the religious nuts and the economic fascists, I’ve been waiting on that one for years and I’m still not holding my breath. It will be a beautiful thing when it happens, but it will have been a damn long time a-comin’. Even this obvious moral midget as their figurehead couldn’t do it.

    49
  50. Aggieland Liz says:

@Rhea, the religious right ARE economic fascists; it’s quite obvious their god is Mammon!
