Pouring Rain in Washington

July 04, 2019 By: El Jefe Category: Trump

For those of you who are the praying kind, those prayers are being answered.  It’s pouring rain in Washington, DC, and there are special weather warnings for heavy rain and lightning until 9 pm.  It might be a happy 4th of July after all.  Happy #4thofyoulie !

  2. Have been listening to thunder rumbling for about 4 hours now. At first it was at such a low pitch I thought it was trucks going down the street or some overzealous sort shooting off a box of firecrackers all at once. But it has been definite thunder for some time now. There is also an increase in wind. I thought this would happen when I saw in the Weather Channel this AM that there were a series of random storm clouds heading for D.C. just in time to ruin the evening. Some times prayers to get answered!

Judge orders Trump administration to clarify position on census – as it happened – The Guardian

The contract to print the 2020 Census minus the citizenship question was around $114 million and is in the print process.

Judge Hazel has given the government attorneys a deadline of 2pm Friday to either stipulate once and for all that there will not be a census question on the census – or move forward with discovery for another aspect of the litigation related to equal protection.

Asked whether the government could delay the deadline until Monday in light of the July 4th holiday, the judge responded “No.” Twice.

Judge Hazel also offered this analogy for the peculiar situation:

“If you were Facebook and an attorney for Facebook told me one thing, and then I read a press release from Mark Zuckerberg telling me something else, I would be demanding that Mark Zuckerberg appear in court with you the next time because I would be saying I don’t think you speak for your client anymore.”

The “EarthCam’s live streaming webcam embedded in the Washington Monument’s pyramidion! ” has been CUT OFF for the day.
The only webcam that views the Mall from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial has been deliberately disabled: “This camera is temporarily unavailable” [link below].
Couldn’t find any other public webcams in the area [you know that there are dozens of HD/PTZ government security surveillance cams around].
Of course there is a strictly enforced “no fly zone” there so there won’t be any aerial news coverage.

This whole shitshow is just a Goebbel’s-like propaganda production. It will likely be a massive failure, but will be spun ceaselessly as a ‘momentous 4th of July display of patriotism’ [watch for Kellyanne], with millions there.

The pics and tweets I’ve seen show very light attendance in the ‘special reserved area’ for ticketed Rethugs. The area for everybody else is behind tall chainlink fencing which appears to be 1-1.5K yards away from the LM [which is a long distance, ~1/2-1 mile]. There’ll probably be almost no one in that area.
If the weather is crap there won’t be any flyovers [we could have a mid-air with debris raining you know where].

I’m waiting to see how ‘the media’ covers this, it will reveal a lot.

    https://www.earthcam.com/usa/dc/washingtonmonument/?cam=wamo

That’s fucking pathetic, turning off the only objective camera coverage. Well, maybe some brave sob will pilot a drone with a telephoto long-range camera at a safe distance and get some reality-based pics.

On the PBS Newshour, Alcindor live segment: fairly undense crowd, probably few there, but camera is tight in, lots of MAGAot hats [didn’t notice any POC around except Yamiche], gray skies in the background. The BBC World earlier had a segment, it seemed a little biased to me [imo, the BBC news has gone to shit since the Tories and May came in, it’s no longer fairly objective].

Flash flood warning issued for parts of D.C. and surrounding states. I think the warning is about rain, and not about the rivers of lies pouring from Trump’s mouth — but I have been wrong before.

Just checked the DC radar and WX [from the links I gave on previous thread here:
    https://juanitajean.com/the-cartoonists-and-the-parade/#comments ,
and the heavier rain is so far staying to the east, west and south of central DC, rats. Looks to be improving WX.

Watching those tanks roll into our nation’s capitol gave me the shivers. Given the stranglehold Trump and his minions have on our government, it doesn’t seem far fetched to worry that those tanks and soldiers could be ordered against dissidents like us. So glad the weather cooperated and soaked all those red hats.

  12. Sandridge says:

Oops, looks like that National Mall webcam has been out a long while.
Why can’t our government maintain a few simple things? I have various similar electronic/internet devices [surveillance systems, weather stations, etc., online 24/7, with many parts], they do require a little fixing once in a while, no prob.

Of course the Rethugs have been hamstringing the NPS, and even stealing money from it, like RAT45 for his 4thofyoulie shitshow.

Sorry, but I feel like I’ve gotta repost a comment from a coupla days ago.
Interestingly enough, freedom of speech is sandwiched between the freedom from religion, and the freedom of the press.
So apparently the first three things guaranteed in the Bill of Rights are under attack from our president.
I wonder how long it will be before the rights to peaceably assemble and sue the government will be in the crosshairs of the Second Amendment, which is lookin to step up and take it’s rightful place as our new first amendment.

What occurred to me later…after my thoughts and prayers went along the lines of severe thunderstorms and perhaps a lightning bolt hitting an appropriate target…was that Demented Donald will now use the weather as the excuse for why his planned party was a flop. I would like to have seen what kind of a “crowd” he attracted when he couldn’t blame the weather.

    15
  16. What are the chances of Generalassimo Trump actually showing up? We all know how terrified he is that he might melt if rained upon!

    16
  17. The Surly Professor says:

If the camera is off-line, it’s not a general network outage:
    http://www.internettrafficreport.com/main.htm.

And globally DNS is routing to the camera just fine. But I can see the Secret Service requesting a cut-off of that particular service “for security”, to prevent somebody with a drone trying to bomb the podium while Trump is there.

Earlier, I thought it would be better if the weather was good, showing how few people paid attention to Trump’s blithering. But since Trump has not found his Goebbels (yet), we don’t have to worry about a clever cut and paste to show smiling, swelling crowds cheering him on. Some pouring down rain is hard to fake, even with good electronic tools. So now I’m cheering on rain, if not Thor himself throwing things around.

maryelle@10: You seem to be a D.C. inhabitant. Please tell us that there was not a large contingent of red MAGA hats in town today.

  18. Joe Hill says:

I watched about five minutes of his speech on Cspan, about all I could stomach. He was standing behind the rain splattered bulletproof glass shield talking in his sing song drone. I got the feeling he was reading it all, for what was the first time. Lots of young white guys in the crowd and even they looked bored.

    It was dreadful.

    18
  19. Sandridge says:

So far all the news camera shots I’ve seen were pretty tight in on the Lincoln Monument area, the ‘in crowd’ looked very sparse, and out beyond the fences [for the rabble] there was almost no one around.

Meanwhile, on PBS, the yearly “Capitol Fourth Show” just started a few blocks away, and it has a huge packed-in crowd in front of the Capitol itself. Everybody’s getting wet, having fun, and haven’t seen any MAGAot hats at all [show started with those commiepinkogreenieyellow’s from Sesame Street].

Wow, the Trump Shitshow probably cost us $10-20 Million and there might have been 10-20 thousand people there.
IIRC, more than a few Texas high school football games draw much more than that [our little 2-level school used to draw 2-3K, it’s now a 5-class w/more].

    19
  20. Sandridge says:

AK Lynne @15, I think I just answered that above, the [yearly] “Capitol Fourth” show a few blocks away is jam packed [it’s on PBS now]. Nobody staying away because of the weather.

    20
  21. Sandridge says:

DC radar now shows a training line of thunderstorms developing about 40-50 miles SSE of DC [off an arm of the Chesapeake Bay, Potomac Estuary?], and moving NNW towards central DC, so if it holds together and strengthens, it will probably drown the fireworks soon.

[yeah, I’m an amateur meteorologist, for 50+ years, even have several of my own radar sets of the marine type [4KW power, 36-48 mile range, stay away from the radome…], but they work at home too; don’t know what they do to the neighbor’s satellite downlinks, etc., when I run one, heheh]

  22. Whatever the outcome of today’s event, remember, almost 50 years ago the rain poured down in buckets, a half million people still showed up and stayed, and Jimi Hendrix played The Star Spangled Banner.

Woodstock. Better than anything Trump could organize.

I can’t believe the Red Sox are so bad that he’d rather watch this stuff, but he seems to think it’s pretty funny. (And yeah, they are that bad.)

Wasn’t his hair getting wrecked in the downpour?

    26
  27. Well, Sean Spicer 2.0 has put out the official doctored photo of crowds on the Washington Mall.

Note especially the lack of reflections in the Reflecting Pool, the wrong clouds for today’s weather, lack of umbrellas, &c.
