OK, Have it Your Way – Let’s Do It

September 29, 2023 By: El Jefe Category: Sedition, Shutdown

Well folks, we’re there.  Let’s just let it happen.  Republicans are now the party of fascism and stupidity, and they’re showing it in spades with this latest assault on the US government.  Yes, they’ve been hostage takers for the last quarter century, holding a gun to the heads of the economy, everyone not white, veterans, active duty military, children, Dream kids, LGBT identified, and everyone else who happens to disagree with them.  Until TFG took over, though, we all knew that most of it was Kabuki play, threatening to wreck everyone’s lives to gain some kind of political gain which was almost always either destructive or pointless.  The unspoken feature of that hostage taking was they weren’t really serious.  They knew that adults in the room would win out, pull us off of the brink and extract some political ransom for doing so.

Watching the catastrophe of today makes the recent past look quaint.  Today’s Republicans, now controlled by a small group of political terrorists, have thrown out that historical tactic.  Led by idiots like Matt Gaetz, Paul Gaza, MTG, and Lauren Gropert, all those rules are out the window.  The Insurrectionist Wing of the GOP really do want to wreck the government to impose their will on 330 Americans whether they want it or not.  They’ve been elected to lead our constitutional democracy when their goal is to destroy it.  Kevin McCarthy, who’s proven to be a shithead in all things, really doesn’t want to destroy the government, but he sold his soul to the Insurrectionists just so he could fondle the Speaker’s gavel if just for a minute.  We’re less than 40 hours from a government shutdown, and the terrorists have also stated their goal to next defund the government by refusing to raise the debt limit their favorite hostage.

After years of worry and stress over this constant barrage of political and economic attacks, I say let’s let them do it.  Shut down the government; throw the economy into chaos; destroy hundreds of billions of dollars of Americans’ value.  Hell, while we’re at it, defund the US government and default on the debt.  The destruction, which is indescribable, will hopefully be enough to jolt US voters out of their collective coma to relegate these fascists to the dustbin of history, at least for another 5 or 6 decades.

Nothing else has worked or will work until these ignoramuses get what they want.  They won’t like it when they do, and it will hurt millions of people, but I have concluded that the only way we rid ourselves of these goons is to let them destroy themselves, then get them replaced with more normal people, and then our laws and regulations strengthened to make it harder to do this the next time they want to try it.  We’ll have to pick up the pieces, rebuild, and then move forward.

The solution to this relentless siege on our democracy will only happen by taking back local, state, and federal governments, arresting, charging, and jailing all insurrectionists and passing laws to keep other terrorists away from the levers of power when they crawl out from under their rock and try it again.

So, let’s do it.

Since there’s nothing the rest of us can do about it, I suppose we have no choice but to let a shutdown happen–but let’s make ABSOLUTELY sure that everybody in the country knows exactly who is responsible for it. Democrats need to point out, over and over and over that the Senate had worked out a bi-partisan agreement between Schumer and McConnell that McCarthy refused to allow to be voted on by the House. Republicans own the shutdown, and all the damage it will cause.

I simply can’t go there. Maybe I am the Neville Chamberlain of this place and if so I guess I’ll take it. The problem with the “let them do it” gambit is that real people WILL actually get hurt. Could you imagine sitting circa 1927 or 1928 and actually knowing for a fact that the Great Depression was right around the corner? Imagine thinking, “well maybe we can get a New Deal if we let this happen.”

Your last paragraph unfortunately is the most sober one. You take this back one step at a time. The good news is that once people see Social security, Medicare, Medicaid, the ACA, and anything else they get to like it. Once people like it then it is next to impossible to get rid of it.

The problem with the let them have it mentality is that that is the exact same crap that some on the left were saying in 2016. Let him win. Then the people will see. Well, how is that working out for you? More people voted for him in 2020 than in 2016 after all the crap he pulled. No amount of suffering will convince most of these people. Why are we welcoming suffering?

The GOP has spent years grooming their followers to believe the Baloney Sandwiches they are serving. We need to speak up, loudly and often, to remind those not already infected, what the truth is and how to recognize lies. When the GOP is put on the spot for facts, they stumble around for some dog whistles and make a quick exit – all media needs to broadcast that.

  4. The problem with letting the MAGA crowd blow up the economy is that it will reverberate around the world–like the Great Depression did. We are 5% of the global population, but 40% of the world’s economy. Like the saying goes, “When the US sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold.”

Defaulting on our debt would have consequences we can’t even imagine. The US Dollar is the one currency the rest of the world is based on. If that proves worthless, then we can’t imagine how all this will work out. It won’t be good, that’s for sure.

What’s interesting is that last night we saw an old John Oliver video on YouTube that featured Kari Lake. My wife said, “we haven’t heard much from her lately.” She was wondering why and I scoffed sarcastically that when someone is shoveling stuff that has been proven false they do not have an absolute right to a platform. Some people will get their news and information from the right wing media silo and there is nothing that can really be done about that. The least the MSM can do is simply grow a backbone and announce loud and clear that they aren’t putting you on unless you are a rational actor that deals primarily in facts.

I get the fact that all politicians lie, but people like Lake and 45 are impossible to fact check in real time. So, don’t have them on. If they want to say the media is biased don’t buckle. They will say it no matter what you do. So, show a backbone and freeze out the fringe element for good.

The MSM is owned by old, rich, conservative, white guys. When the government shuts down, voters will blame….not their own congressvarmint, but….every other congressperson, especially the Democratic ones.

Greedy, power-hungry, people (some of them psychopathic narcissists) are running the planet. I see no clear way to defeat them – and I am a poll-working, door-knocking, eternal optimist. (And no, I’m not giving up….I just don’t see a clear way forward.)

  7. Dianne Fienstien passed last night. Has anyone heard what the Governor is going to do to fill her seat and how soon. It needs to be done ASAP before McConnel runs a coup. All he would need is to have a purple angry Senator that feels has been disrespected to defect. There at least two that get beat up by the progressive’s regularly.

  8. @Nick and Barb – Neville Chamberlain is a good analogy. His appeasement only made Hitler stronger and it was a fantasy that some deal with him would get him to cancel his plans to conquer Europe. Day after tomorrow is the 10th anniversary of Ted Cruz’s and House Republicans’ idiotic hostage taking trying to kill the ACA by holding a gun to our heads. That lasted almost 3 weeks with needless destruction to the economy. TFG did it again in 2018 with those same fucking Republicans. This is nothing but fascist attempts to run the government without the inconvenience of having to win an election. This has been going on since Gingrich and DeLay started this bullshit that’s continued until today. It’s time to turn the tables and let them do the damage. BTW, I don’t know anyone who said “Let Trump win.” That was a pure win for fascism. You fight fire with fire. Let them burn it down. Hopefully then we can put them back under the rock they crawled out from.

  9. Thanks El Jefe! Their are many destructive ‘Kabuki play’ problems we have to overcome. One is Conservatives enormous control of the MSM. They control the message. They also have enormous control, power and influence in goverment and corporations.
..As outlined in the Powell Memo, their jihad marching orders, Conservatives have also been very successful in controlling much of the Courts and Education.
And yes, we can overcome, lets keep clawing back!

    again, Oldie but goodies …

‘Thom Hartmann: Time to Overthrow Our Rulers’
“In the nearly-6000-word memo, Powell called on corporate leaders to launch an economic and ideological assault (for complete control) on college and high school campuses, the media, the courts, and Capitol Hill.”

“Donald Trump is merely a symptom. He’s the result of forty years of the government and corporate media owners engaged in a systemic destruction of the First Amendment and free press.”

Then again no, this isn’t Neville Chamberlain. This isn’t about the GOP at all. It is about their voters. We know what these people are. Chamberlain didn’t know who Hitler was. You stand up and fight the GOP jackasses at every turn, on every hill, and every opportunity you have.

We’ve been backsliding towards fascism for over 40 years. There have been any number of moments that should have been clear. Either it hasn’t been or it is what they actually want. Allowing them to burn it down won’t wake people up. It will just needlessly hurt people. I’m sorry I just don’t believe that closing the government or defaulting will convince people the GOP sucks. If it would I’d understand the play. I wouldn’t like it, but I’d understand it. I don’t think this play does what you think it will.

I agree this shutdown, which is all but sealed now, is different. The qgop house of vengeance is a snake pit of congress rodents bent on showing individually who can cause the most chaos, like some sort of badge of valor. Gaetz and Mccarthy really hate each other’s guts and agreeing on anything is impossible. The chaos caucus has zero motivation to stop a shutdown or end it quickly. The longer it goes on, the happier they’ll be. Hope this comes back to haunt them in the next election.
