Mind you, I’m still cynical about the whole immigration topic, and way to the right of y’all around here [and other liberal sites], as a [former, but still close] long-time border dweller in the Rio Grande Valley.
In favor of a strict and selective immigration policy, just like that of most other nations.
Have any of y’all actually looked into the immigration policies of countries like Canada, Mexico, UK, Australia, NZ, etc.?
All are far far stricter and more selective than ours.
And most all require you to be young [and healthy], well-educated, skilled, and relatively wealthy.

The father was an idiot to try to cross the storm-swollen Rio Grande River at that time. [I have seen raging Valley floodwaters a time or two.]
But these people wouldn’t be so desperate if our government, since the Nixon-Reagan era, hadn’t been destabilizing the Central American region in pursuit of the asinine so-called “War on Drugs” and a misguided, corrupt, brutal “anti-Marxist at any cost” foreign policy.
Policies now exponentially enhanced and twisted by Neo-Nazi fiends like Trump Inc.
[Long ago most of my acquaintances and family employed ‘illegals’, it had always been a ‘Valley thing’ with most, even the Border Patrol officer’s wives had maids and gardeners at home. Hell, a lot of even poor people could afford ‘domestic help’ long ago in S TX; things were worse to the south, what with the many Mexican currency devaluations and political upheavals of the 1960-90’s.]
