Catching Up

February 12, 2021 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

I’ve been running around getting ready for this atrosity.

I did not know there was such a thing as 12 degrees. Well, I did but only intellectually. I’ve been wrapping pipes, covering big plants and bringing the rest of them inside to survive. We don’t do 12 degrees on the Gulf coast. Ya’ll there’s an 80% chance of snow in Galveston. It’s an island. You could get trapped there in snow.  Will boats float on snow? I dunno. I’ve never had the opportunity to do that.

Meanwhile, I just sat down to read the newspapers and I’ll be damn, The Washington Post finally caught up with me.  Sure ‘nuff, Trump knew for a fact that Pence had been moved because Tommy Damn Tuberville was on the phone with Trump and told him so.  So, when Trump tweeted about Pence’s lack of courage, we all know who lacked courage.

Mounting evidence emerging as former president Donald Trump’s impeachment trial unfolds in the Senate this week indicates Trump may have been personally informed that Vice President Mike Pence was in physical danger during the Jan. 6 Capitol siege, just moments before denigrating him on Twitter.

In my mind, any senator voting against impeachment is guilty of complicity, but I guess driving the get away car keeps them too busy to listen or read newspapers.

Truth and facts have no impact on repugnanticans anymore. Stories and conspiracies make for a much more raucous campaign rally and following. As expected, I’m reading that the new defense lawyer today is claiming antifa led the insurrection. Of course they did.

  2. Karen in New Mexico says:

Ouchiemama! 12 degrees overnight in Fort Bend/Harris/Galveston counties? I can hear the pipes breaking from here. Good luck friends!

    2
  3. Well.
It was – 7 this am when I got up.
    -12 tonight with the windchill.
We got 15 inches of snow last week.

    You get used to it.

  4. I lived in Texas for a few years. Never was it ever that cold. Not sure I would have had enough jackets and such to keep warm. Here in the PacNW (Oregon) we’re having blizzard conditions in my area. I do live on the west end of the wind tunnel (Columbia River Gorge), so conditions are worse than elsewhere. The dog keeps eyeing me wondering when I’m gonna walk her. May be awhile. She doesn’t understand that 25 degrees with forty mile an hour wind may be a deal breaker…

Tuberville was chatting with the president while the siege was going on, and MTG was informing the world that the Speaker of the House had been moved? There are a couple of people who need to moved out of Congress, posthaste.

    5
  6. We used to say out in Lubbock that the only thing between us and a blue norther coming from Canada was a barbed wire fence in Amarillo, and it was down. Y’all stay safe!

  7. Jane & PKM says:

We’ll throw your some compassion, Ms. JJ. Snow and cold should stay where people are prepared for it and live in it by choice. Have been in Houston in January and that humidity does add an unwanted bite to the cold. We had nearly a foot last night, but with the sun today 41 seems toasty. Taking the boys out for x-country skiing; dressing them in removeable layers so we don’t roast them.

    7
  8. Stay warm and off the roads! Texans panic in snow and freezes.
    Hope the pipes don’t bust.
Yeah, he knew exactly whose beating, rape and murder he was inciting. Trump was trying to stop the certification and kill his next 2 successors under the Constitution: Pence and Pelosi. Think what that gang of goons would have done to any woman, particularly of color, they’d caught whom they called an enemy.

    8
  9. Grandma Ada says:

My daughter near Austin hasn’t had electricity all day, she deserves compassion. These GOPers in the Senate will not vote to convict his majesty, they deserve no compassion. We in Texas have to wait until 2024 to pry Cruz out of office, but those folks in other states should hold their Senators accountable!

    9
  10. Here in Fredericksburg we have about a quarter to half an inch of ice covering everything since yesterday. The live oak trees are all bending over from the weight on their leaves and branches. The forecast doesn’t take us above freezing until maybe next Thursday, with the low on Monday night at zero. I’ve been in Gillespie Co. for 24 years and I don’t think it’s ever gotten down that low that I can remember.

  11. Steve from Beaverton says:

25 degrees, 15 W/windchill here in Beaverton (SW of Portland). Freezing rain last evening with a little snow on top. 12” more due by tomorrow then more freezing rain later this weekend. Glad I put my studded tires on my 4wd cuz the hills between here and anywhere get little attention.
As for the impeachment, if I read correctly, repugnantican senators have a menu of off ramps from the defense:
    – antifa led the charge
    – it wasn’t really an insurrection because it failed (tell that to the families of the dead and the severely injured). Guess an attempted insurrection is OK;
    – it’s democrat theater and unconstitutional. It’s neither.
Wish it wasn’t a foregone conclusion that the only thing repugnanticans heard was the list above, provided by the cruz-graham-lee brainless trust.

    11
  12. Ormond Otvos says:

Don’t forget to beef up your anti-freeze. Most people down south run it a little weak, and then top up with water. For the predicted freezes, you need at least 50% pure anti-freeze. A cracked engine block is likely a totaled car. Can run$3-4k.

Good luck to the Tesla Terafactory south of Austin.

    12
  13. His second string inept attorneys in the questioning said that the House didn’t investigate the veracity of the orange criminal knowing that Pence had been moved. They are so inept. Of course he knew and they cited this very fact. But this is the type of attorney a “billionaire” gets when he doesn’t pay his bills!!

    13
  14. The weatherman just said the models are predicting -27 on Tuesday. That’s temperature, not windchill and this is Kansas City not Canada. I looked at my husband and asked did he just say MINUS 27? He said well the other model said just minus 19….

Currently, my refrigerator is warmer than it is outside by this weekend my freezer will be warmer than it is outside.

And it’s going to snow, again.

    14
  15. Steve from Beaverton says:

Well as your former president would say, this is all proof that global warming is a hoax.

    15
  16. The Surly Professor says:

Ah, I remember a day in Fort Worthless when it got down to 15, with the usual freezing rain laying down 4 inches of glare ice. But that’s so far north from Houston that it may as well be Lubbock. And so long ago that the records of it are written in cuneiform. Or quipu.

And in the news: A big smash car crash in Cow Town. About 100 vehicles, 6 dead, and 60 injured. It was one of the luxury lanes on I35, where you can pay extra and be going even faster when you start crashing into the cars ahead of you.

    16
  17. Tedinaustin says:

Going on 46yrs in the SA-ATX corridor, had many a snow day/almost week, don’t ever remember a single digit low temp. This must be the dreaded mythical T****acolypse written in the “end-time scrolls”! Woah, to Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick, Paxton, and all their ilk; there’s a storm a’comin and it’s very blue.

    17
  18. AlanInAustin ... says:

Our power went out at 12:30pm yesterday and came back about 5:15pm today. It got down to 61 inside — and that was only because our gas fireplace was on the entire time. (I just couldn’t keep up with the heat loss, but at least slowed it!)

The mix of rain, sleet and cold temps put coats of ice on everything and we’re seeing major damage. In fact, I was outside cleaning up fallen branches when one of the big branches forming the crown snapped. I took of running (fortunately in the right direction) and guessed right in terms of direction so it missed me.

But now we’re in a lit, warm house and life is so much better.

    18
  19. Right here, a hundred miles or so from the Northern terminus of I-35, it was -4F outside a few minutes ago, and there’s a high of -2F forecast for tomorrow, with wind chills down into the -30s. Overnight it will be ~-8F, and tomorrow night it’s supposed to get cold.

We’ve been blowing out all the records the other direction. Useta be the latest we’d ever seen 0F over a winter was Jan 4. Then maybe 15 years ago it jumped to Jan. 18. And recently the weatherlady was saying we’ve now had four winters in the last decade where we never saw 0F.

    19
  20. Steve from Beaverton says:

Not that this will change the outcome of the impeachment, but a couple things came out late today such as Pence’s team saying the defense lawyers lied today. And they lied more than once when questioned by Murkowski.
    https://www.rawstory.com/mike-pence-capitol-insurrection-2650523253/

Also, McCarthy’s team said that he and Trumpf had a fiery phone call during the attack that clearly shows he knew what was going on at the capital and did nothing to call it off.

These revelations won’t change the outcome but might make the vote for guilt closer.

    20
  21. DaddyWasATexan says:

Yikes! Here in Southwest Virginia, our local TV guy would call temps like that “rude.”

Sister is in Austin, and according to Weather Underground, they are expecting 4.7 inches of snow on Sunday. That’s about how much we got last weekend, but we’re in the mountains up here. At least they have a working fireplace.

Daughter in Houston was bemoaning the fact that we’ve had several snowy days including Christmas. Guess she can take her own pix come Monday.

Ya’ll try to stay warm and safe! Don’t forget to let the water taps drip a little to keep the pipes clear. Just catch the water in a basin in case you need it later.

    21
  22. Ormond, thanks for the antifreeze reminder, you beat me to it.
And Holy Crap,. after seeing the Calvary truth revealed to me by the humble legal servants of the Lord, the scales of satanic socialism have been whacked away from my eyes. My earlier appraisal of the carpentry performed on that nobly crusadic occasion was sorely misgiven. And I now willingly…nay joyfully profess that that was not in fact a gallows, as I so blasphemously attested.
    It was a manger.
The craven media have obviously cancel cultured out the Three Kings and their gifts.
I’m still praying for my newfound faith to reveal to me how the holy lanyard of Bethlehem would lovingly support Baby Jesus.
Cause I still haven’t figgered that one out yet.

  23. john in denver says:

We are supposed to get back above freezing sometime next Tuesday … winter weather like this ought to stay in the mountains, where I can go visit it.

Now that Hell, MI has once again frozen over (until the 21st), anyone want to speculate on the over-under for the impeachment trial vote?

With the acts being so outrageous, the House Managers so thorough, the defense team so laughable … I’m hoping for 55-56 votes. I’d be satisfied with an impeachment trial acquittal, followed by a vote on a censure resolution using the language of the 14th Amendment, Section 3, banning Trump AND anyone convicted of a felony related to the insurrection from federal office.

    23
  24. Sen. Whitehouse is suggesting the trial be suspended and that McCarthy and Tuberville be deposed under oath and SS communications checked to help pin down what Trump knew when. It appears Trump’s lawyers lied today.

    Stay warm JJ!

    24
  25. It’s a bit late but to prevent freezing pipes leave them open at a slow trickle.

    25
  26. Elizabeth Moon says:

Footlong icicles on the house; we’ve been below freezing quite awhile…long enough for ice to sublimate off some things, but headed lower from the present 27F now. But apparently Hell hasn’t frozen over yet, so the Republicans are still lying and smug about it.

Since our propane company, who has us on an auto-fill schedule, called us Thursday and said we’d been on their list to fill Thursday but the road was too icy to take the trucks out…we’re came into this 10 day mess with less propane than I like, only 45%, and thus can’t counter the greater chilling effect of the predicted *below 10F* temps Sunday and Monday nights. All our faucets are dripping, and have been for two days (well, not ALL…some are turned off briefly in daytime. We’d rather not overfill the septic tank.

Still…got homemade beef-vegetable-barley soup in a pot on the stove. Freezer with quarts of other homemade soup. Discovered that sausage balls (Thursday night’s supper, dipped in either/both ranch dressing or cranberry-pepper relish from New Canaan Farms of Dripping Springs) make great little dumplings if dropped in boiling soup broth.

Things are bad all over: 7.1 earthquake in the ocean near Fukushima, Japan. Looks like they picked the wrong place for a nuclear plant.

    TexasTrailerParkTrash says: @10

folks from an organization we volunteer with live just outside Fredericksburg. Many (most?) of the trees on their property are down — still photo is awful. But they also put up a short video: it shows one of the trees looking like a branch simply exploded off the tree.

They wrote the booms and cracks made them AND their dogs nervous, so they jumped into their (large) RV and headed out. Apparently, they have a place to park near Padre Island, and the roads looked like they could get there.

Texas Republicans can take solace in the fact their Senators did not become apostates and vote to convict Trump. So, this weird weather probably isn’t the apocalypse yet … hell isn’t freezing over. T
