What? She Thought They Did This Crap Sober?
In the State of Maine in the United States of America a newly elected Democrat, Moira Walsh, was in for a surprise.
She told the local radio station that members of the legislature have “file cabinets full of booze.”
She also let us know that they recently took shots on the floor of the House of Representatives to celebrate Dominican Republic Independence Day.
Walsh says the drinking blows her mind and it’s “outrageous” that you can’t drive after two beers “but you can make laws that affect people’s lives forever when you’re half in the bag.”
Just half? Hell Honey, you ought to come to Texas. We do it fully bagged here.
So… you’re saying it’s the booze talking and not the stoopid in the TX. Lege? Or did you mean both? Hard to tell, I know.
1Bless her for speaking out, but she’s going to need protection from retaliation. Drunks can get awful mean, in or out of the bag.
2@JAKvirginia. A friend of mine used to have an annual Get Drunk and Be Stupid Party.
3Mike, apparently in Maine, that’s called “a meeting of the Legislature.”
4Correction that was the in the state of Rhode Island, I should know my home state.
5I suspect there is more there than legal drugs, though the others are likely better hidden.
6How, in this God-forsaken, Trump-electing November did the Rhode Island Democrats get things so right that this marvelous, straight-talking, clear-headed liberal young woman was voted into office? So glad something good happened in November, 2016!
7Dangitt . . . somehow I overlooked celebrating Dominican Republic Independence Day. I’ll go fix that right away.
8The headlines say Moira is walking the comment back and all the old people in the lege are harumpfing at nearly 1000 harumps a minute. While she may have misstated/lied about the alcohol she say there’s smoke from some fire on the near horizon. Maybe legislators should have an interlock device on their bill entry and voting machines. At least they couldn’t do those things kinda sober.
9@M in El Paso#7- Remember that Will Rogers is reputed to have said : “I am not a member of any organized political party. I am a Democrat.”
10This may, or may not, be apocryphal- regardless it is the truth and some part of the answer to your query.
Moira may be in Rhode Island, but pols are the same all over. I had a State Senator in MA who got his start in a group at the local golf club that made the club bar a high profit center. He was very personable and always had a drink in his hand and a kind word for folks who came up to him. That word was usually “Hihowareyougoodtoseeyouagain” as he moved on to the next person. To his credit he never fell down until everybody had left the room. And after he left office he sobered up and was dry the rest of his days.
11Stands to reason, most of the voters in the presidential election were pretty well pickled themselves.
12In Missouri, Anheiser Busch used to supply the state legislature with kegs of beer on the floor of the chambers.
