Well, It Is Back-to-School Week

I suspect someone in Arizona isn’t making the Honor Roll.

Authorities say a 9-year-old girl has accidentally shot her shooting instructor in the head in northwestern Arizona.

Mohave County Sheriff’s officials say the 39-year-old shooting instructor was shot at an outdoor range in Dolan Springs about 10 a.m. Monday.

Gun don’t shoot people, students do.

Thanks to everybody for the heads up.

If only there had been a good guy with a gun there.

  2. The irony is that they were trying to be responsible and get gun training for the girl. Of course, the fact that the girl is only nine is a pretty good reason not to let her handle guns at all.

  3. The rest of Arizona considers that section of the state on the other side of the Grand Canyon, the Arizona Strip, to be pretty doggoned inbred with the fundamentalist LDS church up there.

  4. I appreciate the several levels of irony here, but I wonder what it feels like to be a nine-year-old girl who shot and maybe seriously wounded an adult by accident.

  5. Actually MaryK, Dolan Springs is not on the Arizona Strip. The “Strip” is that portion of Arizona bordered by the Colorado river on the East and South and to the North by Utah and West by Nevada. Dolan Springs is South of the Strip and closer to Kingman, Arizona…remember Kingman? That where Oklahoma City Bomber Timothy McVeigh to residence for a bit while he hatched the plan.

  6. My God, that poor kid! And my sympathy to the instructor who, if surviving, will probably look for another line of work. Since the student was a minor child, the instructor will take the brunt for this.

    Good grief.

Maggie-I’ve read elsewhere that the gun involved in this tragedy was an Uzi.Whether this is real or the weapon was a facsimile of the Colt Army revolver( Arizona’s “official”gun) one has to wonder why a 9 year old girl was being instructed in its use. If an Uzi the question is doubly relevant. I also read the instructor died so he’s not worried about ramifications but some 9 year old girl is traumatized for life. The Darwin award for the year has just been given

  9. The guy died – now get this the parents and 9 year old were on vacation and the guy was teaching her how to shoot an Uzi. Once she hit the trigger the barrel “climbed” on her, she couldn’t control the gun and bullets struck the instructor in the head. The investigating police said it was a “freak” accident but actually it should have been expected. Trained military & police who handle an Uzi or like weapon have this same problem with the gun “getting away from them” and to hand it to a 9-year old is criminal.

I have a rule for Fun With Guns that nobody can die except the actual shooter. This guy, however, qualifies.

Irresponsible times three; the parents and the instructor. It’s not an accident, if no thought was given to the child’s strength and probable inability to hold an Uzi steady. The only tiniest bit of luck in this tragedy is the child did not panic as the weapon rose and injure herself, or more people on the range.

Sure wouldn’t count on the ‘parents,’ but sure hope someone is available to counsel and comfort the little girl.

Common sense,if anyone there had any, would have limited the magazine capacity to three or four bullets for the very reason the instructor got it. Without a firm, strong grip short barrelled automatics climb in a hurry with virtually no chance of controlled aiming.

Even a handgun of sufficient caliber can plunk the shooter in the face if they aren’t capable of keeping the recoil corralled. That 9 year old didn’t stand a chance and it was her parents responsibility to protect her from such avoidable trauma.

What a tragedy. The parents, and the instructor, were criminally negligent and this poor child will be traumatized for life.

  15. Coverage in the British paper the Guardian has the expected “What is it with America?!” comments on the article. Someone, presumably American, calmly noted that an Uzi wasn’t right for a 9-year-old and listed ten other automatic weapons that would have been better choices. Reply to that:

I can see this poor child in a few years. Remember, honey, guns don’t kill people. You did!

I forgot to say a nine year old with PTSD.

  18. I almost lost control of my car on the way home from work when I heard that the instructor had been giving a 9 year old lessons with an Uzi!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who in their right mind does that? And now he’s dead. The kick on the Uzi when she pulled the trigger blew bullets all over and the instructor took one to the head.

And again I bet this does not make it into anything the NRA prints and distributes. This was not a situation that no one saw coming. This was a 9 year old child and a piece of equipment that overhorsed her and the instructor. It was written in the stars the second the instructor handed her the weapon. Geez oh peeeet!!!

    No words. Not printable anyway.

  20. Thanks, Rhea. That pretty much covers it. Gee, whatever happened to the world’s respect for the USA?
