Utopia ISD
Way west of San Antonio, in the county of Uvalde, is the Utopia Independent School District.
It’s a 1A school, which means it’s small enough for their yearbook to be a brochure.
In the halls of the public elementary school hangs this banner …
Honey, your teacher voice in the Republican primary will get you another pay cut, increased class size, fewer supplies, no technology, more expensive health care, and screw your retirement. However, you will be given a very nice handgun and be told to use it to ward off some fool with an assault rifle.
Mind you, this is a Texas public school telling you to vote in the Republican primary. I am getting eye roll fatigue.
Thanks to Linda for the heads up.
Are there more than maybe 8 Democrats in Uvalde County? The County Convention is being held at The Munoz Law Firm in Uvalde.
This banner may symbolize just how limited the voters’ choices are in that part of Texas. I wonder if the Uvalde County Dems hung similar banners any-damn-where in the county? Even one?
Clearly they need our help.
1My that is scary, where I live elementary students can not vote yet! Explaining the importance of voting is one thing and a good thing but campaigning for a certain party is wrong. I am so glad I live in Nw England.
2Isn’t that unconstitutional? That sign wouldn’t last two measures of Planck time in a northern VA school.
3Republican Utopia also means, besides guns, they will do their damnest to make the school all White/non Liberal or poor.
4Tilph:
Nothing is unconstitutional until a Court says it is.
No Court can say it is until there’s a plaintiff (with standing) and, usually, a lawyer willing to volunteer his/her time and bring a suit.
I dunno nothin about Uvalde County, but I’d guess they’re lacking in those essential elements.
OTOH, if the banner said “Democratic” primary, well, that’d be found unconstitutional before the public school was finished with its mandatory morning prayers….
5There are some Democrats in Uvalde County, but in Utopia they are scarce- at least vocally because there have been intimidating tactics during Obama’s tenure.
6I hope TEA or (better) ACLU gets wind of this.
Cue the ACLU
7I’m sure Republican legislators will help teachers adjust to their ever more meager salaries with such proposals as:
* The Christian Science Health Care Plan – now available to teachers of all faiths
8* Automatic membership in Christian Mingle – for help in finding a marriage partner with a real job and benefits
* The Revelations Retirement Plan – either it’s the end of the world soon and you won’t need money to retire, or you’ll finally figure out what Republicans didn’t do for you, either way, it’s a revelation
Damn! It is the comparison with other school systems that convinces me that mine is really uptight and righteous. Nobody could get away with that poster in a school around here (NoVA) or even electioneer the lines standing outside a polling place. and heaven help you if you bring a gun! I saw that happen once and the bearer get an in his face tirade from an unarmed man related to one of the candidates.
9Uvalde County is yet another example of Democrats expecting salvation from the Hispanic voter. It ain’t gonna happen in Texass without a superhuman effort.
Uvalde County is ~66% Hispanic, yet the Rethug vote dominates election after election (Utopia, pop ~200 is >90% Anglo). (we used to spend some time there, HS football games against Uvalde HS were a regular fall trip once, most of y’all never traveled 150 miles+ 1way Fridays for games, right?)
tRump had an 11% win over HRC there, about the same for TX-23 with tool Will Hurd’s win.

10“Utopia ISD has one school – Utopia High School – that serves students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve. ”
It’s about the same size as my former school, >250 students total.
The effort to get supporters of public education (teachers) to vote in the Republican Primary is for the purpose of having Scott Milder beat Dan Patrick. I’m all for that. #candan
11@Mark in Austin
Thanks for crossing that i and dotting that t for me. Milder did found Friends of Texas Schools. Maybe Milder can buck psychotic Dan loose from his death grip on the Lt Governor’s throne.
Bob Bullock is prolly turning over in his grave like an amphetamine powered rotisserie.
12There are a lot more Dems in Utopia than the other locals think. Not enough, but still. Some even are brave enough to put out signs.
13I am a retired teacher, and I am part of that movement. I am also a progressive Democrat, and it was quite something for me to vote in the Republican Primary. We (the teachers and others friendly to Public Education) have become “purple” by becoming non-partisan in this election only. We are doing everything we can to get rid of Dan Patrick who wants to take your tax monies for the schools and give it to those who want to go to charter/private schools. You will be paying those schools rather than your local schools.
In the general election, we still will vote for those who are pro-Public Education. We have not gone completely crazy.
Midler is the choice to get Potty-Dan OFF the ballot.
As a retired teacher, I have not gotten a cost of living raise in over 15 years. Our health insurance (and I will agree – like so many others) has risen substantially. BUT state employees AND our legislators get basically FREE health insurance. We are tired of Education being the step-child of the state.
14Actually, Sandridge, we DID travel 150 miles one-way for football games –always if we won South Zone of what was then District 14 AAAA (long ago). Corpus–one of their three high schools–was always the North Zone winner.
How many of the Hispanic voters in Uvalde County are registered to vote? How many of them will lose their jobs if they’re seen at the Dem primary? Does Uvalde County even have a DPS office where you can get a qualifying state ID?
