Today …

– an officer was shot and killed outside Chicago,

– Two brothers are dead from an accidental shooting followed by a suicide in Louisiana,

– video was released showing cops killing a man with his hands in the air in San Antonio,

– someone has shot at passing cars 4 times in Phoenix,

– and police shot one of their own and a citizen when they raided the wrong house.

Edited at 5:10 pm – a Houston teenager killed himself while posing on social media with a gun.

Notice anything in common?

Thanks to Jolyn for the heads up.

    Yeah. No gun control.

is a good answer, if a partial one.

  3. Gee, lemme see. All involved guns and very fallible humans?

  4. daChipster says:

Yes, they all happened after BenghazimailWhitewaterRosehillgate and can be solved with less government regulation and a suspension of the 14th amendment.

    And repeal Obamacare.

  6. The solution to them all is more guns. Issue at least one, already loaded, to every newborn.

Disclaimer-No guns were injured in any of these videos.

  9. Iron Celt, Steve Sack is the editorial cartoonist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, my local paper. He won the Pulitzer a couple years ago. I get to see his first rate cartoons 6 days a week. He’s really, really good.

  10. 10 years ago today Geraldo Rivera was in NO, crying over the conditions that the people there were being held in. People with guns were unable to get the basic supplies for life in to the stranded people, and at the same time were keeping those same refugees from escaping to surrounding areas.

My point, whether we want to acknowledge it or not, gun holders are in control of our lives.

All have the twig and berries?

I’ve said for a long time the only gun control we need is not allowing men to have them. The single factor most likely to indicate risk of propensity for gun violence isn’t race, age, education, socio-economic status, mental illness, region of the county, urban/suburban – it’s genitalia. Men own about 60% of the firearms and commit well over 90% of the gun violence. They simply haven’t the emotional control or maturity necessary to have such a dangerous weapon. You want to reduce gun violence by 90%? Stop men from having guns.

  12. WA Skeptic says:

JJ; your link for the murder/suicide in La goes to the LA Times article about shots fired near an elementary school. An interesting article, but not what I was hoping to read.

WA Skeptic – I think I fixed it.

gawd, now we got unloaded bullets killing people. It wasn’t a gun death after all.

    17
  18. Old Mayfly says:

OK, Juanita Jean, clearly you are just an anarchist. The fact that guns kill people is incidental. The real story is that people with guns kill people.

    Snark, of course.

    18
  19. Juanita Jean,

You forgot to mention: It’s been 10 years since a Norwegian policeman killed anyone.

    19
  20. Very interesting point, Someday Girl. Either we take away their guns or their twigs. Which is it gonna be?

    20
  21. Re the Louisiana brothers: “After talking to the witness and from all indications, it doesn’t appear to have been an intentional act to kill his brother,” [Sheriff] Guidroz said in a news release.

All is well here, now – move along.

  22. Didn’t John Oliver do a bit recently on how the one (1) underwear/shoe mis-fired bombers’ attempt now has millions (1,000,000) of individuals taking their shoes off at airports; yet hour by hour, day by day, week by…you get it– there’s no change in gun control.

    22
  23. Guns make you stupid.

    23
  24. SomedayGirl, that’s an excellent comment. Testosterone Poisoning is America’s #1 killer disease!

  25. Ralph Wiggam says:

Maryelle, I think it is the berries more than the twig. But I did have a good idea. Men should be allowed to have EITHER a gun or their berries, but not both. That ought to calm things down.

  28. Rhea (#6), why on earth wait until they’re born? Providing fetuses with guns would cut delivery costs as they could shoot their own way out.

  32. Treehugger says:

It is true that police in many other developed countries are not armed with guns. On the other hand, most of the population of those same countries is also not armed with guns. To give cops a bit of a break, I think they pretty much have to assume these days that every man, woman and child is armed. Unfortunately, there are plenty of police who should not be police. Some people just cannot deal with the power that the badge and gun give them and they become trigger-happy bullies and use their position to intimidate and threaten anyone who questions them. The only real answer to any of this in the US is to get rid of the guns. I don’t see that ever happening, unfortunately.

  33. Polite Kool Marxist says:

Responsible gun owners favor gun safety regulations, while the NRA ‘responsible’ owners fear safety legislation. Of course they don’t like the idea of taking guns out of the hands of the crazies; they are the crazies.

First thing to go should be “clips” and “magazines.” Really. Who needs more than a basic six-shooter or standard rifle? Those wanting to play with the big boy toys need to man up and join the military.
