The South Shall Rise Again

May 05, 2017 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Honey, you ain’t bringing Ole Dixie down.  Oh no, sir, you are not.  Today Texas became the 11th state to call for a convention of the states. Only 34 states are needed.

My favorite comment during the debate?

As a member of the House Select Committee on State and Federal Power and Responsibility, Rep. Larry Gonzales, R-Round Rock, who opposed the convention in the past, could have, in league with Democrats on the committee, scuttled the resolution.

Asked why he joined the majority in approving the resolution Thursday, he replied, “Just did.”

“Just did.”  The best damn reason for doing anything.

My second favorite?

[Democrat Chris] Turner also sought to add some mischief to the debate by offering an amendment that would expand the agenda for the convention to include an amendment that would “remove from office those officials and members found to have colluded with foreign governments.”

That followed a recitation by Turner of allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 campaign to help elect President Donald Trump.

Turner’s amendment was tabled on a 94-53 vote.

Which is kinda odd to defeat it considering that’s already in the Constitution.  Sedition is a twenty year prison sentence.

Thanks to everybody for the heads up.

  1. The Wikipedia love-fest biography of old Larry Gonzales says, “In his few moments of downtime Larry especially enjoys crafting with glue…” I had acquaintances that enjoyed glue as well. They called it huffing at the time. “I found my mind in a brown paper bag…” Y’all down in Williamson County need to check on ole Larry. He might not be right.

Sound like where old Larry is from is a prime hunting ground for forensic anthropologists!

  3. Larry does sound like he’s got a few holes where his brain cells should be.

  4. Maryland voted for a constitutional convention decades ago, but last month rescinded that vote, most Rs voting to keep it. Nevada did much the same.

Well, now… is this for a Constitutional Convention? Cool. Maybe they can get rid of that electoral college thingy? Y’know, the thingy that put your guy in the driver’s seat? And clarify and strengthen those ethics rules? Wut? No? Hmmm… thought so.

I’m so proud that 53 Representative’s voted for Turner’s collusion amendment. Now if we can just double that number we will be in tall cotton.

Upon hearing the term, “House Select Committee”, I know nothing good can come from it.

I heard Kyrie O’Conner on Houston Matters deplore this move, noting that the Constitution had been amended just 27 times in over 200 years. I would point out that Texas’ Constitution has been amended 491 times. If Abbott was interested in really leading Texas, rather than grandstanding to his paleo-conservative base, he might start by improving our own charter, a relic rooted in Napoleonic Law (though I shudder to imagine what ‘improvements’ he might bring).

A scholarly friend of mine in Indiana said we only need FIVE more states to ask for a Constitutional Convention. It’s one of the emergency things Abbott believes we gotta tend to. Good grief. I’m not taking sides but we might oughta pay attention.

I might also tell you that Tom DeLay said in front of TV cameras awhile back that God said right in DeLay’s ear that God wanted DeLay to call a Constitution Convention. The thought of DeLay being in charge of a convention to change the U.S. Constitution gives me the willies, esp if Abbott is sitting next to him, cheering him on.
