Texit
Well, it happened, Texas Republican State Representative Bryan Slaton has filed to bill holding a vote on Texas secession from the Union.
If Slaton is successful, in our next election we will get to vote on whether or not to secede. The last time that happened was when General Sam Houston, a goddam genuine Texas hero, resigned as Governor of Texas, a job he loved dearly, instead of becoming a traitor and leaving the United States of America as the fruitcakes all wanted to do then, too. To this day, General Sam is known as the best Governor Texas ever had, drunk or sober.
Texas would not survive a month without the federal government. For gosh sake, Texas doesn’t even have a dependable power grid because 30 years of Republican government squandered all our oil and the money that went with it. The banks would crash within 24 hours cause nobody would trust Greg Abbott to insure our savings. First thing to go would be our social security checks, medicare, food inspection, a trade policy, and every damn military base supporting the economies of Texas cities.
I’m pretty damn sure this won’t be the last of me pitching a wall eyed snot nosed hissy fit about this.
J.J,
I think you should include Anne Richards along side Sam Houston. If TX did this, ya know most people be about nine meals away from revolt and flying bullets. TX has whole lot of people packing heat.
1OOPs…typo.. left out “would”.
2Huh.
Do state representatives take an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution?
3unless this slaton dude has a fairly low IQ, bet is he is trying to get attention in a large field of smart, but evil –insert your favorite pejorative– in order to garner some kind of advantage.
4I also have no doubt that there are many here that would support and act on any secessional effort without regard for down-the-road consequences. Why? Look at the trump supporters. Nonetheless, he is potentially dangerous.
What is the background on him?
I find that loud stupid people go home and pray that people with basic good sense will stop their idiocy. He only wants to get on Fox or Newsmax.
5One of the reasons TX joined the U.S. was because RoT money was about as worthless as a Continental dollar. If TX wants to be a poor Third World nation, let history repeat.
6Dare him to make it a national referendum. I bet more people outside Texas would vote for secession than inside it.
7Yep, Sam is one of the best Texans ever, despite competition from LBJ, Lady Bird, Ann Richards, Barbara Jordan and the Blessed Molly Ivins.
8Isn’t this a direct violation of the oath of office? Are there no consequences for that?
9I remember, back in school, saying every day ” one nation, under God, indivisible except for Texas, with liberty and justice for all. “
10It would be popcorn worthy to watch what happens if they did.
11JJ y’all are welcome here in sunny California any time! We have a Kombucha fed triple Latte with extra steamed virgin Ox milk Coffee Stand on every corner!
The real problem I see with Texas secession is they’ll want what we have, declare war and invade us. Oh course their wealthy $$$, white supremacist Sugar Daddy Putin will support and encourage them.
Interesting stuff to know …

No Texas Republiclowns in the US Congress? Yes, please!
I guess y’all can still have major league baseball. Canada does.
13he’s lagging far behind us in the Northwest. About half of eastern Oregon has voted to join Idaho. It’s potato.
14I lived and worked in Texas (San Antonio) in 2013-14, so I’m no historian about Texas (I do recall both Abbutt and corrupt Paxton teevee campaign ads, though). It is not surprising that a repugnantican politician would propose secession. As Angela said above, he probably just wants to get on Fox “news”. I agree- let’s see what tucker carlson has to say about this. It would be a perfect fit on his “show”.
15And speaking of carlson, how about his big scoop that the Jan 6 insurrection was a friendly get together, and he had the proof. He supported that with his personal editing of the evidence of the insurrection thanks to that patriot kevin mccarthy. Kevin tried to justify his actions saying Americans had the right to those videos. I wonder what the victims of that insurrection have to say. I also want to hear what old Rupert M has to say about his Fox “news” personality’s lies to his viewers.
There are so many interesting perspectives on trying to even push this forward. I suspect Mitch and Kevin would have hissy-fits over the change in who controls congress if Texas is neutralized.
Living in TX, I don’t want to see this happen at all…but I can be amused at the ridiculous fall out that could occur.
16I agree with Harry Eager, at #7. All this is bluster and horsefeathers, of course. Not even Abbott is stupid enough to believe that Texas could survive as an independent entity, when the US pulled all its facilities out of the country and the subsidies stopped coming. The rest of us do get kind of tired hearing them propose secession, though–almost enough to encourage them to try.
17Instead of just the 1,254 mile border with Mexico, Baja Oklahoma would have to defend 4.137 miles. Some would say their northern border is more important.
18I have a neighbor who wants Texit. He believes nothing will change: the military bases, the SS and Medicare checks, etc. will all stay the same.
19I guess ignorance is bliss for your neighbor.
20Given that Texas has roughly 8.8% of the US population, it would also need to assume 8.8% of the National debt, which would cripple it from the get go.
21Kate, funny thing about that. J.J. and everyone points out the subsidies and all other benefits of the American government going away, and folks like your neighbor are convinced that the revenue from oil will keep all us Texans living high on the hog.
22But they seem to forget one teensy little detail.
Even if our state’s revenue was greater once we didn’t have to send it off to Yankees (anybody north of the Red River),
they seem to be under the delusional impression that the repugnantcans are gonna magically start giving a crap about us little people.
Safety net?
Communism!
Boot makers are gonna make a killing, because the only way retirees are gonna keep their heads above water is by pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps.
And if they get sick?
The Texas version of Medicare will involve a lotta thoughts and prayers.
Cause you know, repugnantcans have always been known for taking care of the elderly and less fortunate.
Independence seems unlikely but, mabe, if Texas asks nicely Mexico might take it back?
23Cut Texas loose and make DC a state. That’ll be an even trade that I would take.
24He’ll probably demand alimony because he knows the state needs Big Daddy Sam. No child support though because they don’t give a damn about the kids.
