Stop right now and read how Paul Krugman explains the reign of Donald Trump by the steeple people.  It’s short and it’s powerful.

Thanks to Craig for the heads up.

  1. Succinct. On-point. Brilliant. And now I’m speechless.

And every Conservative friend and relative will get an edited version in an email. Soon.

    Exactly. Krugman nails it.

  3. Polite Kool Marxist says:

Standby for more. HRC is starting to throw elbows at the forced birth candidates. If her campaign staff is smart, they’ll have their candidate take aim at all the conservative myths.

If the Teatard hypocrisy was a large balloon imprinted with a huge “H” they’ll be dying the death of a million pin pricks.

Has anyone checked to see how many of the 17 dumb sticks has an Ashley Madison account?

    3
  4. if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it 120 times..we’re screwed.

  5. Prup (aka Jim Benton) says:

I have to disagree with Krugman, in part. Yes ‘conservative principles’ are really ex post facto justifications for what they already did. In fact they usully come from academia, not from the rich themselves — but that has ALWAYS been true. (Those of you who read that ‘Social Darwinism’ was the guiding principle for the late Nineteenth Century ‘Captains of Industry” should remember that these “Captains’ were remarkably unlettered men. They not only never heard of ‘Social Darwinism,” most of them probably never heard of, nor cared about, Darwin.)

But, as for Trump, I am still stuck believing that he is ‘reliving his lost youth.’ I was curious as to how old he was, and discovered he’s older than I am — by TWO DAYS. Which means he was the same age as I was when Ken Kesey was around, when Abbie Hoffman was starting the Hippies, etc. His father’s wealth and position kept him from joining in, but isn’t this almost Hoffman like?

I mean, Trump is not stupid. He could get someone who could ‘soften the rough edges’ without destroying the ‘maverick’ image. He could say the same things, make the same points, get the same crowds without being so ‘over the top’ that he can’t help but producing a Hegelian ‘antithesis’ that will only help the Democrats. (Even the religious stuff — he could have asked to have ‘that driver who always carries a bible and has a cross where the fuzzy dice should go’ drive him to the interview and get a few tips from him on how to answer the questions.)

I still expect some magnificent horselaughs to come — only will Trump be laughing as well?

  6. Conservative ideology= justification for status quo (i.e. greed, white supremacy, Kristian male domination)

  7. RepubAnon says:

I watched a clip of a Republican congresscritter on Bill Mahrer talking about The Donald. The congresscritter bemoaned The Donald’s tone, but said that Donald Trump was correct to say that illegal immigrants were coming to the US and taking jobs away from the middle class (and stealing government benefits, and causing a massive crime wave, etc.)

Those were his talking points, and he kept repeating them.

This is the real threat posed by Donald Trump – more and more people only get news from Fox, so their perceptions are increasingly divorced from reality. And, of course, they vote … and they think those who oppose their views should not be allowed to vote.

  8. BegoniaBuzzkill says:

Krugman was succinct + preaching to the choir

News provider “Christianity Today” tallied up 400 preachers with their zippers down via Ashley Madison accounts. The author provides a “what to do if” you or your preacher is outed. No advice to apologize to victims of their hellishly hostile hypocrisy….Their repentance recipe: chant incantations to the deep space sky wizard, zip up then put the cross hairs on your victims.

FYI: The grown son of the Baptist University President video taped catching his Bible Bigot Boss daddy with the mistress during their sexy time rendezvous.

Epting’s mistress, Keli Sewell, is also employee of Baptist college in S. Carolina. She still works there (not for long) but he resigned months ago. Surprise! The university covered up the adulterous affair, let their holy horn dog retire in gilded glory so the continuum of bigotry is unscathed. The tape was leaked, let the games begin!

  9. What Krugman said, exactly.

    9
  10. Over @Daily KOS is a related article about the Repub voter:

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/08/28/1416423/-S-E-Cupp-GOP-Voters-Are-Mean-Irrational-Reactionary-and-Very-Very-Delicate

Bottom line, the Repubs want to be mean to people, and the liberal pussies keep geting in the way.

Yup, I surely will keep trying to be kind to everyone, just because…

    10
  11. Ummm, uhhh, richly irony impaired GOP created FrankenTrump

Pssst! His third wife First Lady, is Slovenian export

So sayeth Trump at an event: Women (Who Love Their Husbands) Can’t be Trusted to Keep National Security Secrets

  12. AliceBeth says:

I would love to see one of those evangelical “Christians” who supports “traditional marriage” and supports Trump really explain themselves. I want details. I want to see someone look them in the eye and ask questions and demand answers. I want to hear the hypocrisy.

    12
  13. Marge Wood says:

Trump would not get by with spouting all that crap, ‘scuse me, if he weren’t so rich. If he were poor, he’d likely be picked up for causing a disturbance.

    13
  14. Marge Wood, this sums it up:

    http://www.gocomics.com/nonsequitur/2015/06/25

The modern GOP lives by two adages:
    1) Reality is whatever we say it is, and we’ll stifle anyone who tries to confuse us with facts.
    2) We got, and we gon’ keep.

I’ve been waiting for decades for the “religious” (at least the real ones) Republicans to look over at the super-rich Republicans and say, hey, wait a minute…. I’ve given up on that happening because I now think there are very few real religious people in the GOP. If there are, they’re keeping awfully quiet.

  15. JAKvirginia says:

Rhea: I nominate you to instruct people like Krugman. What you said is succinct. And spot on correct.

    15
  16. Krugman writes very well but none of this is news to me. My undergrad professors were talking about some demagogue in the future who would behave just like this. The profs also felt that this demagogue would eventually be so bad that he would out himself with even is core group. Of course, there would be a lot of help from within his core group cuz there is always at least 3 people in that group who want to be king and will depose at any cost or risk whoever they have to. Yup. Its gonna get worse and maybe even bloody. As far as outing himself, Trump is gonna run his mouth off and some of his “passionate” people will actually lynch somebody and put it all out for the world to see. Thats when Trump finds out that its over. Really over. And yes he will go down wailing like a professional victim.

JJ you had me fooled. When I first started reading I thought you were doing a stirring rendition of Meat Loaf’s Paradise By The Dashboard Lights. Fooled me good.

    17
  18. Linda Phipps says:

Trump misread the shortest verse, “Jesus wept” and thought it was “Jesus kept”.

    18
  19. Polite Kool Marxist says:

maggie, does T-Rump even rise to the lowly level of an illiterate demagogue?

Jimmy Kimmel captured the T-Rump message: http://crooksandliars.com/2015/08/jimmy-kimmel-imagines-perfect-trump

Awesome, great and a few synonyms is all T-Rump has. No nouns, verbs and certainly no sentences in his word salad. He’s the male version of Palin on steroids without the benefit of a bra. We all know what Palin excited in the base of the Teatards; but T-Rump? Remains a mystery to me.

Maybe it’s his underlying message: “you too can be a billionaire and bang supermodels.”

    19
  20. WA Skeptic says:

@#19: No, his message is to all the super-entitled but deprived white supremists: look at what I have and you don’t, all because of (chose your most hated subject).

We fought one of the most destructive wars in human history all because of Facism, and now we’re debating which of 17 Fascists we should elect.

    Oh, my poor country.

    20
  21. pkm, I thought his message was “you, too, can be like me and benito mussolini.” Why that gets people all excited is beyond me.

    21
  22. Karl Marx says:

WA Skeptic, you said it so much better!

“No, his message is to all the super-entitled but deprived white supremists: look at what I have and you don’t, all because of (chose your most hated subject).”

maggie, there are some great articles describing the Republicon ‘mind.’ But none of them seem to due complete justice to the mind frame of scapegoating, playing the victim, and the complete disregard of facts that composts (not a typo) the ‘conservative’ mindset.

  23. daChipster says:

There’s a great dissertation on the relationship between Trump and the teavangelical over at patheos. I believe that the blustery alpha CEO male douchebaggery of the Donald appeals to the same authoritarian impulse in the steeple sheeple. After all, what is this post-enlightenment fundamentalism except a carboy of snake oil compounded to sanctify white male prestige?

  24. How many years have we had to endure these nasty people?
It isn’t just Trump though. They have big fights, a black POTUS X 2, SSM marriage the law of the land, abortion still legal, women still out of the kitchen, NO major wars..
The poor dears. They are being driven to endorse T – Rump !!!

    24
  25. About all those Mexicans who dare cross our southern border (per El Donaldo), there is a great piece in the Washington Post Editorial section this AM about Mexican soldiers who assisted after Katrina. Of course, El Donaldo will take a pecksniffian attitude on this. He will remind the world that after all he did say that some of them were OK. Made a copy of this article and I’m keeping it handy. Some transparency here. My late husband and I honeymooned in Mexico. It was GREAT!
