Remember Glen Maxey?

February 22, 2017 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Those of you who have been around here for a while know that occasionally former State Representative Glen Maxey is my partner in crime.  Glen and I get together and raise money for sending ballot by mail applications to Texans who are over 65 or disabled.  It has been a highly successful program thanks in large part to you guys.  You guys cover the small counties in Texas where the Democratic party can’t carry the financial burden of this program on their own.

The Maxey Happy Dance

Every two years I come and ask you to donated and you send us thousands of dollars in return for our everlasting devotion and generally very late thank you notes.  And a picture of Glen’s happy dance. You have never let us down.

Now to Glen. As soon as Glen gets back from the DNC meeting in Atlanta (he’s on the DNC), Glen is having heart surgery.  As we were cleaning Glen’s apartment for him to have a neat, nice, and clean place to recover, we discovered that Glen’s life of bachelorhood has taken a heavy toll. Oh dear God. There was not a spatula in his kitchen that had a handle and his towels looked like he stole them from the doggy bed.

Coincidentally, today is Glen’s 65th birthday and he’s having a small party in Austin weekend after next, the day before his surgery is scheduled.  His friends got together and registered him at Target for all new crap.  His crap is in desperate shape.

If you would like to send Glen a birthday present click right here.  You can buy him a dishtowel for $2.25 or if you’re a big spender, there’s a perfectly hideous kitchen rug for $10.49.  There is no delivery charge because it will all be delivered to his birthday party. If everything gets sold out, you can give him a gift card for $5 up.

I’m gonna send this link to Glen so if you want to just wish him “Happy Birthday, You Old Cooter,” the comments is the place to do it.

Thank you, guys.  I love Glen.

  2. Larry from Colorado says:

Sure wish I knew how to give him a gift. IF I read the link right there are 181 gifts so far?

    2
  3. Happy Birthday to the very best, Glen!

OK ladies, I’ll leave invading Glen’s man cave to you. He deserves to eat, too, so where do we send cash so he can order out or stock his ‘fridge as he pleases?

    3
  4. From one old coot to another, Happy Birthday Glenn, and wishing you a speedy recuperation after your tune up.
I’m sure JJ was referring to the river turtle Pseudemys when she called you an old cooter. The other one wouldn’t have passed the mama test.

  5. Happy Birthday, Glen!

I would love to buy something from this registry, but I can’t figure out how it works. Can somebody enllighten me?

  6. Juanita Jean Herownself says:

Okay Everybody – it works just like a bridal registry. Scroll down and pick the thing you want to give Glen. Then click “ADD TO CART.” You will be given two options: CONTINUE SHOPPING or GO TO CART. (Note: you might also be asked, “How Many?”)

Click whichever one but when you finish shopping, click go to the cart.

That’s where you pay for the item. Target knows this item is for Glen so it records your name and address (for thank you notes) and then sends the gift to Glen.

There are 181 items but most have already been purchased. That’s when you guy a gift card. The first item listed is a Target gift card. They can be purchased for $5 – $200.

If you want to send a check, click the TELL JUANITA at the top of this page and ask me to send you my mailing address.

    Easy smeezy.

  7. Thanks, JJ, but I actually managed to figure this out. Hope the party is a blast!

And, I also hope Glen recovers from his surgery in record time.

  8. Kenneth Fair says:

My parents (Frank and Janet Fair) knew Glen back in the day when he was a firebreather at Sam Houston State University. I still have a distinct memory of visiting Austin as a small tyke and going to some sort of party (at his house?) where my parents introduced me to Glen. Coincidentally, it’s their 50th wedding anniversary today. So Happy Birthday, Glen! I got you the popup tent for shade when you’re doing the important work of democracy.

  9. Heart surgery is a big deal and Glen should have someone to be with him when he comes home. My sons took time off to help me out when my time came, so I hope Glen’s friends can organize a schedule and/or get a visiting nurse to cover the time he’ll need. Also trips for checkups and tests and to pick up prescriptions. Also some Mel Brooks DVD’s would prove that laughter is the best medicine. And of course, heart healthy meals with little or no sodium will be needed.
BEST WISHES FOR A SMOOTH RECOVERY, GLEN.

  10. JJ, thank you and thank Anna that I can get to the WMDBS again after several sad days of seeing no new posts!

I’m all ready to add something to Glen’s pile, but the site wants me to pick the thing up at MY Target store. I think I see how to change that to another store, but I need a specific location. Where shall I have the thing waiting for you? And how do I make sure that you (or some other name) can pick it up when you’re not the me that paid for it?

This is a great idea but the details are complicated.

  11. charles phillips says:

Rhea, I’m a veteran eShopper, and even I had a problem with that. Overcame them, I did, yus!

    And, uh, Glenn? Happy birthday!

    11
  12. Juanita Jean Herownself says:

Rhea – yeah, I got confused by that, too. But, the program will automatically send it to Glen’s Target without you changing anything.

    12
  13. I think I finished the kitchen up. Now, does he have a Drizzly gift registry? He’ll need alcohol during the recuperation period, if only for his guests!

    13
  14. Happy B-Day to Glen!!!
As for his coming operation, I would like to say it will be easy but having gone through that sort of thing, I know better. Depending on what is being done (bypass? AVR? etc.) and how well it goes you could be out in 4-5 days. I was supposed to be out in 4 but complications set in and after 8 weeks, 3 hospitals, 5 operations, 6 ambulance rides plus rehab, I got home. And yes, some friends came in to my house, scrubbed, scoured, laundered, and more. And check out Home Health Care (assuming there is such a thing down your way). They come around daily and make sure you are OK, eating right, dress your wounds, help with bathing, etc. I am sorry I can not help out as I am totally tapped out due to L4-L5 stenosis, PAD, thyroid and other issues. But I will be rooting for you.

    14
  15. Glen Maxey says:

Thanks JI and everyone at the Beauty Shop! I have a recovery team all lined up and folks helping around the clock. I intend to be kicking Republican ass with a lt more emery real quick. Love you sll

    15
  16. Happy Birthday to Glen and many many many more!

    16
  17. Hint when ordering: use zip code 78731 to make sure it is delivered to the correct Austin North store.

That hint came from a very polite and helpful man named Elvis in Nicaragua. That’s the opposite direction from Kalamazoo but then I have been in Kalamazoo in the Winter.

    17
  18. Glen, you might want to take it easy on the comedy movies for a while. Laughing hard could hurt after heart surgery. Maybe start with mildly amusing and work your way up. Something like “Young Frankenstein” could make you pop your stitches.

    18
  19. A Bachelor Shower – what a great concept! Lord knows, most bachelors need a shower more than most brides. ;->

Glen, I hope to be able to contribute a tiny bit. You deserve all the TLC, local and long distance, that you can get.

Also a suggestion. In addition to the general cleanup and sprucing, how long since the place was painted? It would take a couple of days for the fumes to clear, but nothing brightens up a place more than fresh paint.

    19
  20. There wasn’t much “automatic” about that. I had to designate the Austin North store– thank you, James Cargas, or I would have had no clue– and JJ’s name and email as the alternate picker-up. So I hope that works. JJ, you may need to use my name, so have it on you. I think I ordered a Target pickup once and it kept wanting to send this thing to my local store.

    20
  21. Oh, and Happy birthday, you old cooter! I hope you do many more happy dances.

    21
  22. Happy birthday Glen. Kicking snacilbupeR ass is so much fun!

    22
  23. Roses are red.
    Violets are blue.
Ha! Ha! I’ll always be older than you.

Have a great birthday and a speedy recovery.

    23
  24. Marcia in CO says:

Happy Birthday from So. CO, Glen … your heart is in the right place and let’s hope the surgeons don’t rearrange the place when they are in there!! 🙂

    24
  25. Lisbeth Echeandia says:

A very Happy Birthday and best wishes for a speedy recovery from your surgery. Love you and all that you do! Enjoy your birthday party.

    25
  26. Barbara Stone says:

Happy Birthday from Barbara in Los Angeles. I thought the registry was fine. It gave the choice of sending to yourself or to Glenn.

    26
  27. So I wanted to send Glen a gift certificate and tried to do so, but apparently that’s too difficult for me, so I’ll be contacting Juanita Jean directly to find out where I can send a check. Probably better anyway, since he’ll doubtless need more in his refrigerator than a bottle of ketchup. I’m still somewhat disappointed in Glen for failing to dance nekkid (false advertising, I say), but I still love him a lot.

Happy, Happy Birthday — take care of you and get well soon — Texas needs you!
