Question

January 03, 2019 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Okay guys, I hear all the complaining about Nancy Pelosi being too old to be Speaker.  She is 78 years old.

But I hear nobody question Steny Hoyer being elected House Majority Leader.  Hoyer is 79 years old.

Hummmm ….

I loved her pink dress and her announcement that we will vote to open the government today.

I wish her only the best.

  1. Jane & PKM says:

That’s ageism at it’s worst. 78 or 48, there is currently no one better qualified that NDP. Definitely not ready for RBG to retire, either. And, sexist. DJT is 72; it’s not age that disqualifies him, it’s his childish ignorance.

And, please drop the misogynist card attached to a heavy anvil on the next dolt who makes the false claim that Senator Warren lacks the “likeability” quotient to become President. The lady is a political rock star and possesses loads of charisma. If there’s anything lacking it’s within those who lack the intelligence to follow her policy arguments.

I’d vote for Senator Warren in 2020. I also like Senators Harris and Klobuchar. Game on for hearing all of their policy arguments. 2019 “Year of the Women,” best thing to happen to us since the Constitution was written.

Today’s too adorable moment goes to the little girl who was jumping with excitement next to Speaker Pelosi. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/house-elects-pelosi-speaker-as-diverse-new-congress-begins/ar-BBRLGJq?ocid=spartanntp

  2. Steny is still a bit peeved about being passed over, back when– he says that when Pelosi steps down, he’d be willing to step up.

It’s like choosing your doctor– do you want an older doc with more experience, or a younger one who’s better versed in the latest studies and techniques? A practice with both would be good, but you have to decide who’s across the desk from you.

My concern about Sen. Warren is that whoever declares early is in front of the public for a long time, intercepting the slings and arrows and giving people time to get tired of them (ahem, Hillary Clinton).

  3. Jane & PKM says:

Rhea, no comparison between the months available to the detractors to swift boat Senator Warren and the years Kellyanne, George and others spent following Hilz from Arkansas to Benghazi with smear campaigns. Although John Kerry sure did seem to disappear without a fight and wtf was with Al Gore conceding to Dubya.

She didn’t run last time. But it’s just my guess that Senator Warren is both well aware of the pitfalls and ready to run this time. Liking it that the Democrats have a wealth of talent for 2020 to take the House, Senate and WH.

My concern? We’re already being infested with concern trolling from Russia and the media is already biting. We’ll need to be at the top of our game to keep the electorate focused. Me? I’ll be happy to both watch Liz Warren’s back and hold Nancy Pelosi’s beer. Staying busy keeps me out of trouble. Mostly…

  4. to tucker – strong partners enhance the strength of both. So yeah for strong women.

Steny hoyer is a corporate thuglicrat from way back. Keep Nancy and bounce hoyer.

What i like about the 2 reasonable d candinates who have for practical matters have declared ( Warren and Inslee) have made progressive issues the rocks upon which they will stand or fall. Systematic failure of present political/ economic system for Warren and Global warming for Inslee.
Lots of overlap plus discussing issues that have been ignored for to long.
Tired of campaigns speaking to how big the military should be, or who should we invade next, or how many different types of tax cuts can dance on the head of a legislative pin.
Now we are looking at candinates speaking in real terms about real issues for real people.

ps. sorry tulsi you are neither real, viable or an agent of change. Though with her in the race and in light of her active and ongoing connections with right wing hindu fundies we might have to be concerned with Indian hackers this election.

  5. AliceBeth says:

So, there are lot of new people in the House. They need a speaker with experience, with knowledge of how things work. If you did not pay attention to how she worked with those who thought to challenge her, then you missed her skill. She appears younger and more energetic than Trump. She is the woman for the job right now.

    5
  6. For the Neanderthals in the GOP, a woman will always be too ….., ….., or …… Nothing new there.

She was warned, nevertheless she persisted! (Lest we forget.)

    6
  7. You won’t hear any complaining from me. Also, I second Jane & PKM’s comment. It’s ageism, pure and simple.

    7
  8. Mark Johnson says:

I think that Pelosi is the right person for the job at this time.

My problems with her have nothing to do with her age or sex. To me, she is too connected to big corporate money. When push comes to shove, she does her masters’ bidding.

Her decision to dismiss the idea of a Green New Deal was a huge mistake. Huge. But she works for the people that pay her.

    8
  9. I probably agree with Warren on 90& or more of the issues, but she is too abrasive for me. I’d much rather she be sec’y of treasury.

    9
  10. Pelosi Pelosi previously held the speaker ship from 2007 to 2011. Her return to power today following see changes in American politics is the first such reprisal since Sam Rayburn. This is because Sam Rayburn and Nancy Pelosi are both bad asses! By that I mean they are both Extraordinarily effective, extremely good at their jobs, and yes – they know how to count the votes. They hate Pelosi because she’s effective.

Case in point, there would have been no ACA if Nancy Pelosi had not known what it was going to take to get it through the house of representatives. House Dems will hold hearings on a Medicare for All Bill – with Pelosi’s support, something that has never happened before. She’s got an end game, she’s laser focused on 2020 and she has every intention of seeing Dems retake the Senate and the WH. She’s a badass and exactly what we need.

When Pelosi arrived in the Capitol, there were 23 women: 12 D, 11 R. Today, 31 years later, when she reclaimed he speakers gavel, Pelosi is one of 102 women: 89D, 13 R. One of the reasons for that, she works tirelessly to get folks elected and she is one heck of a strategist.

Personally, I hope Pence gets impeached and so does Trump, making Nancy our first woman President but that’s probably because I enjoy fantasizing about Republicans heads exploding (too much sci-fi as a kid).

One final thought visa ve both Pelosi and Warren: the race for Prom Queen was always way more cut throat than the race for Prom King, just something to think about.

    10
  11. Loved that Pelosi took her oath while surrounded by children.
A good reminder of whom the congress should be thinking of whenever they start potificating about the future.
    A human face.

    11
  12. I’m completely sick of people piling on Ms. Pelosi. Any man who raised as much money as she has and could keep her party (the party of herding cats), focused and on point, would be anointed as the second coming. No one would mention his age or clothing. Argh

    12
  13. Speaker Pelosi (WOOT WOOT!!!) is precisely what is required to get Bigly Piggly sucking diet cola and talking to the painting of Andrew Jackson. A woman in change that can make 45 shut up by virtue of being a consummate professional.

Show them how work gets done…

    13
  14. I waS ALL FOR SOMEONE NEW. mOSTLY BECAUSE i WAS TIRED OF THE BAGGAGE SHE CARRIES (NO, IT IS bs BAGGAGE THAT IS INSTILLLED FROM THE rwERXS, BUT STILL). …..AND THEN i SAW HER TAKE TrUMP TO THE WOODSHED. nOW i AM tEANpELOSI. gET HIM, GIRL!

    14
  15. Ignore the inappropriate caps. I did not realize I had to changed it to all caps

    15
  16. You are as old as you function. She functions just fine.

    16
  17. I’m 78 and still in my third childhood, Miata convertible and all.

    17
  18. joel hanes says:

… when Pelosi steps down, [Steney Hoyer would] be willing to step up

    In his fucking dreams.
    Those days are over

    19
  19. In a perfect world, the Democrats’ leader would be 20 years younger than Individual 1, to further emphasize how lame and lazy he is. Regardless, Nancy Pelosi is a great Speaker and will go down in history alongside giants like Sam Rayburn. My only concern is that she needs to be mentoring the next two generations in the House, so the future leaders are as strong as she is.

    20
  20. fierywoman says:

May Pence and Trump be impeached simultaneously (heh-heh-heh!)

    21
  21. Charles R Phillips says:

I always supported Nancy; she is, in fact maybe the best Speaker of all time. However, she is not perfect.

    22
  22. Hoyer is Majority Leader because Pelosi appointed him to that position. Responsibility for the new generation is still with her.

The ideal situation is that Pelosi remains Speaker with her experience and talent, but she appoints younger Dems to leadership posts so they can gain experience and be ready to take over in a few years. Dem leaders and elected officials repeatedly fail to train, mentor and prepare the next generation of electeds and candidates to take over. Dem leadership is very selfish in this way, and encourage interparty fighting for the scraps they make available.

    23
  23. Watching Nancy and Chuck put the UC (unindicted conspirator)
in his place in the Oval Office brought such hope, having endured the Rethuglican a**-kissing for the last 2 years.
And I love that she has virtually told him where to put his freaking wall! Makes Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell look even more spineless.

    24
  24. I flipped the channel to one of the CSPANs to see what was on last night (in replay) and found badass Nancy Pelosi posing for photos with newly sworn-in members. There were two stations set up (three US flags at each for a background) so that family members could be arranged (to save time) while 78 year old badass Pelosi walked back and forth about 20 feet between those stations, in 3″ heels, to greet and shake hands and pose and smile all through it. I’m not sure how many members did the photos but at the end Pelosi and her staff themselves posed for a photo and I heard someone say 300. I suppose lots of Rs didn’t bother, but some did (CSPAN labeled most). Not to mention, Pelosi owns Drumpf. Go Nancy!!!

    25
  25. My daughter got to meet Pelosi last summer at a Sylvia Garcia event. She reports that the petite Ms. Pelosi wore super high heels and seemed perfectly comfortable standing around and speechifying for a long period of time. My kid was thrilled to meet her and get a picture with the two of them. Also fyi, one of Pelosi’s daughters lives in Houston.

  26. Mary Lynne Foster says:

It’s not exactly like picking a doctor because nobody has the skills and techniques that Nancy Pelosi has. I am SO GLAD we have her there. And a bigger plus is that she loves the battle. I just hope the new representatives pay attention because she is giving them a master class.
