Oh Mississippi

July 04, 2020 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

You can change their flag but you cannot change their minds.

Blacks in Mississippi just lost the coveted status as human beings.  But, you know, they have a new flag so that’s an equal trade, I guess.

Gail Welch, an election commissioner in Mississippi, took to Facebook to warn “people” what was coming.

Her first explanation is that this was supposed to be a private comment. On Facebook.

Second comment was that she was just wishing that everybody got out there and registered people like Blacks do. And by everybody she means white people.

And the third comment is that she’s an elected official and she supposes she could have worded it better. Which, if you think about it, would not have taken a lot of effort if you recognized Black people as human beings.

Gail is concerned.

So am I, Gail, so am I.

Thanks to SGray for the heads up.

She’d probably get very angry if someone called her a racist, merely because she uses the word “people” when she means “white people.”

I expect she thinks “black” = Democrat, and “white” = Republican.

  2. “fir”? Does she think everyone is a tree?

  5. As a former resident of MS, I am delighted to hear of the get- out-to-vote effort among blacks. It needs to be in full swing.
So many poor white folks in the South need to wake up an realize the Repug Party is not their friend. When we lived in MS, we tried to explain but….
Aside:When Obama was first elected, most of the dems in our small town had an election night party —- we and our coolers all fit on the small bandstand in Ocean Springs.

  6. Isn’t Miss Gail supposed to be “ of the people”, not biased over one party or the other?

I think what she’s really saying is: “Help me do my job to keep GOPs in power”.

    See, no racism implied… {/s}

  8. Gail Harrison shows how the “people” of Mississippi can still display Southern “hospitality” for all to see, even without the flag they fly in the face of genuine acceptance and graciousness.

    8
  9. Rick @2, since she is “a Election Official, ” “fir” is probably the right spelling.

Ms. Welch is deeply steeped in the “Plantation Mentality” and she’ll die fervently believing it.

On the same plane, a great Daily Kos article, with a mind-boggling ‘1 week’ timeline of the shithole firehose of Rethug/trumpian craptacity we deal with daily :
    https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2020/7/4/1958175/-Trump-is-as-bad-as-Custer-George-Wallace-and-Bull-Connor?

The partial roots of the “Plantation Mentality”—
[Below quoted from the DK article cited above, I’ve personally mined out many other TX documents on the topic from the dense thickets of academia…hey, ‘the sons and daughters of the confederacy’ groups, and worse, are very active around here—]:

From the secession documents of Mississippi:
“…Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery– the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin. That we do not overstate the dangers to our institution, a reference to a few facts will sufficiently prove.”…

From the secession documents of Texass:
…”Texas abandoned her separate national existence and consented to become one of the Confederated Union to promote her welfare, insure domestic tranquility and secure more substantially the blessings of peace and liberty to her people. She was received into the confederacy with her own constitution, under the guarantee of the federal constitution and the compact of annexation, that she should enjoy these blessings. She was received as a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as negro slavery– the servitude of the African to the white race within her limits– a relation that had existed from the first settlement of her wilderness by the white race, and which her people intended should exist in all future time. Her institutions and geographical position established the strongest ties between her and other slave-holding States of the confederacy. Those ties have been strengthened by association. But what has been the course of the government of the United States, and of the people and authorities of the non-slave-holding States, since our connection with them?
    […]
In all the non-slave-holding States, in violation of that good faith and comity which should exist between entirely distinct nations, the people have formed themselves into a great sectional party, now strong enough in numbers to control the affairs of each of those States, based upon an unnatural feeling of hostility to these Southern States and their beneficent and patriarchal system of African slavery, proclaiming the debasing doctrine of equality of all men, irrespective of race or color– a doctrine at war with nature, in opposition to the experience of mankind, and in violation of the plainest revelations of Divine Law. They demand the abolition of negro slavery throughout the confederacy, the recognition of political equality between the white and negro races, and avow their determination to press on their crusade against us, so long as a negro slave remains in these States.”…

Folks, Mississippi got that flag changed with lightening speed after the SEC threatened them with no championship football events until it was changed. Other sports organizations piled on and the legislature and governor got it done.

  12. Grandma Ada says:

I used to work with a group and do voting registrations at various events. We would to the least at MLK parades – black folk register and get their kids registered As soon as they are eligible. We would do the most at Pride parades – gay people, wake up and register!!!

  13. Steve from Beaverton says:

Mississippi could take the racist symbol out of their flag, but they can’t take the racism out of their white elected officials and Trumpf followers. As Ms Gail pointed out, black Mississippians are registering to vote, but “people” like her will do everything they can to keep them from voting.
Trumpf stoked his white racist followers last night and he’ll be doing again tonight. The race baiting bastard. I’m sure she’ll be watching him tonight.

  14. Jane & PKM says:

Too bad for Gail that the fascist Bill Barr is in charge over at DOJ. Otherwise Gail would have some legal beagles to keep her company as they investigated probable wiping of the voter rolls. In a just society every time these stinking racists revealed their intent, DOJ would be checking for multiple civil rights violations and election irregularities.

But John Roberts said we don’t need the VRA. Care to rethink that, John?

  16. Ormond Otvos says:

Watched the whole Rushmore speech. Couldn’t find a single dark face in the crowd, even with a 4k TV.

Did hear a beautifully crafted speech designed to appeal to angry frustrated people who feel attacked about their religion, their patriotism, their race, their financial position, their gun culture and even their fossil fueled trucks.

Trump also mentioned police defunding, cancel culture, riots, presidential statue desecration, Social Justice Warriors, secularists (atheists, of course) and cultural ideologues.) All liberal weak points. Very convincing, I think. Trump scored a lot of points.

Meanwhile Biden plays SJW from his bunker. If he folds to the radical left crazies, this country is done. One commentator on PBS said “the Republicans hate Biden less than Hillary”. BUT,
if Biden picks a “black” woman for his running mate, it will resurrect that Obama/Hillary hate. Better be ready for it. And the voter suppression will be fierce.

Have you also heard rumors that Trump voters are being told to lie to pollsters? That would be a very effective tactic.

    16
  17. No, Ormond. If Trump is re-elected the country is done. Your comments are very sneakily Trumpist. Nice try though.

    17
  18. Ormond,
Trump is now approaching rock bottom, appealing to the basest, lowest common denominators of that base; the wealthy, evangelicals, and racists.

I honestly don’t believe Biden would lose a single vote if he chooses a Black woman, or Asian woman for VP. None of the groups I mentioned above will vote for Biden no matter who he picks as his running mate.

  19. Steve from Beaverton says:

AK Lynne- emojis don’t work on this site but assume I gave you a thumbs up!
It was a well crafted Stephen Miller hate/scare/race-bating speech that the stable genius could barely read, slowly. His cult already hates everythinyg democrats believe, in their most un-inclusive party, so will they hate us more?
I totally disagree that a black female VP pick will conjure up Obama/Clinton hatred. Obama won 2 terms with his unifying style and his skill in communicating, among other things. Kamala Harris is exactly what we need in my opinion. She can express a similar style as Obama very clearly and strongly and is far smarter than DUHTrumpf or Pence.
I do agree that Biden needs to step it up and build up a message that independents and republicans that are turned off by Trump can take to the polls. There’s plenty to talk about.
Trumpfs message will appeal to the most repugnant of repugnanticans- can’t change that.

Democrats should never base our policies or candidates on what would please the racist, misogynist, elitist, greedy, cruel and generally ignorant opinions of the Republican base.
We must aspire to make the lives of the vast majority of our
citizens fairer, better and safer. That includes running an African
American woman for Vice President no matter what the bottom of the barrel members of the almost defunct Republican Party
    think.

    People are protesting too much:
“‘It’s those kind of things that people say until somebody brings it to their attention and then it’s not what they said or it’s not what they meant,’ said Sen. Juan Barnett . . .
“‘I don’t know if she is racist or not. But it’s the just undertone and stuff of what people say that gives the illusion that that’s what you are, based on what was said.'”

    Uh — what?
When people say things they usually [as in, like always] mean them. They may not mean to say them out loud, but they mean them.
Aamof, she admitted she didn’t mean to say it out loud.
    Just sayin.

And yeah, what people say IS a pretty good measure of whether they’re racist or not.

Do Mississippi’s officials go to middle school before they run for election?

    Reasons I’m asking:
    1] I’m a elected commissioner
    2] Those kind of things
3] It’s just undertone and stuff

P.S. And grammar aside, no — it’s not ‘undertone’ when you talk about “blacks” and “people” as two different groups. It just isn’t.

Full disclosure: I lived in Mississippi from the age of 2 months to 4 1/2 years. I’m sure glad I got out when I did.

I am a Texan, which to my dismay makes me a Southerner. There was in fact, a Civil War battle fought in Texas. Except for Eastern part of Texas, there were no slaves and the majority of Texas tried to stay out of the fighting.

There is a mention in “Texas Brags” that the only Civil War battle fought in Texas was won by Texas (deep in the Rio Grande Valley.

I am personally a Texan and American and NOT a Southerner!

    25
  26. Sandridge says:

    Captain Dan @25,
    To correct your misconceptions:
    1. There were a number of Civil War battles fought in the Rio Grande Valley, both naval and ground; there were many at Galveston and in between those places too.
    2. Slaves were held and worked in every settled part of Texas pre-War. Including in my own South Texas county.
    3. Elections were held to both ally with the Confederacy and enter the Civil War. These actions were enthusiastically supported by most voters.
3A. Most Anglo Texans eligible to enlist in Texas units did so highly motivated, a number of Texans had already served or joined in other Confederate states units. There were many Texian/Hispanics who enlisted too.
3B. A notable exception were many of the German [and other nationalities] who opposed slavery and the Confederacy. Many of them were mercilessly persecuted by the Texas Confederates, being stripped of land, property, livelihoods. And many were kangaroo-trialed, imprisoned ,and often executed, or hunted down and killed.

    .
“Texas Brags” sounds like a pretty poor source of information to me.
