This is the second excerpt from “I Alone Can Fix It”: Donald J. Trump’s Catastrophic Final Year, by Phillip Rucker and Carol D. Leonnig, published in the Washington Post this week. This excerpt is the account of events leading up to and including the insurrection on January 6, and it is chilling to the bone just how close we came to Trump and his goons taking down the government. This is a must read.

All of these witnesses, and the former guy is still walking free.
3I was able to read it and it’s infuriating, makes the hair on my neck stand up. We all know how self centered trumpf is, but his actions on Jan 6 should have been grounds for impeachment. Oh that’s right, he was but repugnanticans acquitted him even though they lived through it and feigned outrage at the time. And now they are trying to pretend it was not that bad. That’s the most infuriating of all that’s happened. And the big lie is all they have to run on. They have no conscience.
4Hopefully, law enforcement no longer hold the institutional view that right wing demonstrators pose no real threat.
It’d also be nice if Democrats push back against the growing Ruby Ridge-ization of Jan 6. Allowing the right to have endless hissy fits about how law enforcement shouldn’t enforce the law against right-wingers helped bring us to where we are today.
5The REAL Big Lie is that there was no insurrection on Jan. 6.
6The planning for what was to be a final full-on coup d’etat began long before January 6th, the groundwork began to be laid in the summer of 2020, and even as early as January 2017.
The use of mild or weak terms such as “insurrection”, protest, march, demonstration, etc., should be discouraged.
This carefully pre-planned [but somewhat incompetent] set of actions was nothing less than a coup d’etat attempt, intended to totally overthrow the legitimate government of the USA. A word like “insurrection” implies a somewhat spontaneous general uprising, which is was to a degree, but this had a much more sinister guiding force of a fascist cabal already holding substantial power.
Comrade Donnei and his minions, guided by their shadowy masters, started insinuating that the coming election was probably going to be stolen, hinted that the pandemic might require a postponement, etc.
A massive propaganda effort was mounted to get the MAGAots ready for any actions needed, with nearly all Rethug politicians forced to swear fealty to the Dear Leader.
Those goals were achieved in spades, and are now being fanned to a fever pitch. A Second Civil War is entirely possible now.
There has been a powerful fascist cabal active within the US since the 1930s, it is now nearly in position to seize ultimate control if allowed to. We must crush these traitors completely once and for all in the next two election cycles, there will be no second chance beyond that.
