I Know Y’all Are Sick of Sports at the Beauty Salon, But …

November 07, 2017 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

… I want to introduce you to Gregg Popovich, a Texan by choice and the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs.

The Spurs played, and won, a basketball game on Sunday, just 30 miles from the church shooting.  Coach Popovich told the assembled sports reporters after the game …

“We won a basketball game, but considering what’s gone on today it’s pretty meaningless,” Popovich said. “When you think about the tragedy that those families are suffering, it’s just inconceivable and impossible to put your head around. So I think talking about basketball tonight is pretty inappropriate. So you guys have a good night.”

This was only minutes after Texas Attorney General and indicted felon Ken Paxton pranced in front of tv cameras to say that the only, by gawd, only solution to this kind of thing is for Texans to carry more guns.

And Texas Governor Greg Abbott highjacked a police news conference to run it like a damn game show host, which left even me with my mouth hanging open.  You’d have thought he was describing a homecoming dance, not a mass murder.  Especially appalling since he tweeted this two years ago.

Moreover, Popovic has said of Trump This man in the Oval Office is a soulless coward who thinks that he can only become large by belittling others.”

And if that wasn’t enough, he continued,

We have a pathological liar in the White House, unfit intellectually, emotionally, and psychologically to hold this office, and the whole world knows it, especially those around him every day. The people who work with this president should be ashamed, because they know better than anyone just how unfit he is, and yet they choose to do nothing about it. This is their shame most of all.”

Popovich, who goes by “Pop”, is considered one of the greatest coaches in NBA history.  He graduated from the Air Force Academy with a degree in Soviet Studies.

I don’t think he’s finished talking yet.  He’s a leader, and just the kind we need.

I just wanted you folks from foreign states to know about it.

Thanks to everybody for the heads up.

Be social and share!

Thanks for the introduction to Pops. He sounds like a wonderful human being who gives a damn about this country and its people. We needs lots more like him – and many of them should run for office. However, I do understand how difficult and harrowing it can be to be a candidate these days with all the caca thrown at one 🙁

  2. Even though a lot of Alaskans have adopted Seattle teams, I haven’t really gotten all that enthusiastic. I must say, however, that your enthusiasm warms my heart, and I cheer for your teams right along with you.

  3. I have been a Pop fan for a while. We need more like him in this country.

    3
  4. Coach Popovich rocks, but Attorney General Paxton makes Alferd Packer and George Metesky look normal by comparison. What a weasel!

    4
  5. Pop, you said it best! All these politicians should have said that , instead we can’t talk about it. I dashed off email to my Senators and Reps. It was very simple I said ” we are now sacrificing 18 month old children for our right to bear arms”.

  6. If the Spurs win the NBA title again this year, chalk up another championship team which won’t be visiting the White House.

Would he want to run for the Oval Office?

  8. “He graduated from the Air Force Academy with a degree in Soviet Studies.” I acknowledge his tremendous skill as a basketball coach, but damn, I wish he were doing something else, you know? His skills and wisdom are badly needed.

It’s great to know about the sensible folks in Texas. Most of what people in the other 49 states get to hear about are the nutcases, of which Texas seems to have a gracious plenty.

  11. Back in the day I dated me some u.s. military academy students. They were really nice but none of them had such a major as Pop did. Which makes me think, wow! I would love to get a look at that program! My tax dollars helped pay for it and damn it had better be good and then some! Actually, with that background I would like to see Pop at the helm over at the CIA!

  12. Been aware of this guy for sometime, first as a nemesis for the Rockets (and most every other NBA team). However, his comments (rant) on the unimaginable night when trump was elected president was priceless and exact. A couple days ago on Twitter, I stated “Popovich for President!” I wasn’t alone! He is a good man – and very intelligent.

    12
  13. Pop has always been a man of few words, and he doesn’t waste them. He doesn’t seem the limelight, and I doubt he would run for office. But if he did, I would move to his district just so I could vote for him.

Coach Pop for Governor, Senator or President. His choice. And just as soon as possible.

    14
  15. Mr. Popovich also hired the first woman as a full time assistant coach in the NBA. Becky Hammon, with whom I happen to be acquainted, was a big star in the WNBA, finishing her playing career in San Antonio. Pop hired her because Ms. Hammon is very smart, knows basketball inside and out, and has excellent coaching skills. She is the head coach of the the Spurs NBA D League summer team. Its generally accepted wisdom that Coach Hammon will be the first woman head coach in the NBA.

(BTW, Becky reminds people to dream big. She grew up in Rapid City, SD, population 50,000. Went to college at Colorado State and was not drafted into the WNBA. She started as a walk on in New York.)

  16. I loved Popovich’s press conference video. Here’s the full video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv4vCOSf8gM

  17. What a miracle: a man of integrity!

    17
  18. Some of the RW Nut Jobs in San Antonio are not too happy with Pop and say they are not going to attend any of the Spurs games while he’s the coach. I say it is their loss. Last year Pop was voted the coach that a majority of players in the NBA would most like to play for. He treats all of the players fairly, and if you watch at the end of a game he always talks with the opposing coach and many of their players.

Pop is smart and tough and probably the most respected coach in the NBA. Tim Duncan could have played on any team he wanted to for considerably more money, but he wanted to stay with Pop.

    Yes, I’m a fan!

  19. Sandridge says:

If the Democratic Party PTB’s aren’t approaching Gregg Popovich to see if he wouldn’t associate with them/us (no idea if he leans D or R, talks like a D), and consider running for ‘something’, preferably the 2018 Presidential election, they’re damned fools.

He has more than enough credentials, moving into politics would be a cinch (don’t ever want to hear about ‘lack of experience’ again).
He would also probably have very long coattails. He could also become a great president.
Educated, ex-military, super smart, well spoken, fair, honest, decent, strategic and tactical thinker, far-sighted, gregarious team player and builder, able to leap tall buildings in a…oh wait…

Gregg Popovich is the very, yea maximum, antithesis of the sorry ass Piece of Sh!t in the WH now.
Nov 2018 with Popovich running would be a walkaway.

Time to stir it up y’all, times a wasting…make it happen.
    .

    .
(PS- I hate ‘pro’ sports, hate them stealing taxpayer money for their goodies like stadiums (don’t get me started on the Alamodome), but Gregg Popovich does what he does. It’s up to the Democratic leadership to convince him, if possible, that he has a higher calling.)
