Fun With Guns: Texas Vagrant Edition
James Abney, 64, of Forney, Texas, was at the Greyhound Bus Station in Las Vegas last Friday and got perturbed when a security guard asked him to leave.
So, being from Texas, Abney did what Rick Perry would want him to do – stand his ground.
Abney told detectives he was going to make an example of the security guard for trying to make him leave. He said he pulled out the gun to scare him, fired one shot in the air and smoked a cigarette before further pursuing the guard and firing several more shots.
Nobody was hurt and the police got there in time to make an arrest just as Abney ran out of ammo. Yah, he’s an ex-felon. With a gun. Luckily, very little ammo.

Now I’m sure the NRA will claim the real problem was that the rest of the folks in the area didn’t have military-grade weaponry at hand. If only the security guard (and the various bystanders in the area) had been armed, I’m sure the NRA would claim that this would have been solved more quickly.
Fewer survivors, of course…
1CNN aired a fascinating program tonight hosted by Fareed Zakaria – gun violence around the world. Bottom line: gun violence is a solvable problem. Yes it is. The US leads the world in guns per capita and incidences of gun-related deaths (no surprise there). Did you know we are ahead of Yemen in guns owned per person? The rest of the world (rightly) thinks we are stooooopid when it comes to gun control in this country. I’m inclined to agree with Chris Rock: make ammunition really expensive (think he joked about a $5,000 bullet)
2RepubAnon, Abney was one lucky dude that the LVPD showed restraint under the circumstances. He was even luckier that an NRA armed clown wasn’t there to spray him and all innocent bystanders in a hail of 2nd Amendment grand standing. Or ground; whatever the bad idea.
3Just for comparison, read about this recent gun incident in Iceland. Their country is the 15th most armed in the world (per capita), and when the police shot a man on December 2nd it was the first time in 200 years. The police also apologized to the man’s family:

6Jeez, if only Rick Perry hadn’t pardoned Abney when he was still incarcerated in Texas, he would still have had him available to vote. Aw shucks.
7Rick–Amazing difference in gun problems between a country that allows any idiot to own an arsenal and one that requires a written test, a medical evaluation, and registration…Could the Icelanders have a lesson for us?
8VintageMomma, I suggested the expensive-ammo idea to someone who should know, and he told me that it wouldn’t work because ammo isn’t that hard to make in a home shop. Sounded good to me too….
9I have a sneaking suspicion that this happening isn’t staying in Vegas. He will probably be spending some time at the Iron Bar Inn.
10I like the idea of gun owners paying a hefty amount for liability insurance. That could lead to several beneficial outcomes.

I would think the answer is to tax the peapods out of the powder, whether it is in factory made ammo or the ingredients to make your own. You could structure collection the same way as cigarette taxes with the little stamps on the box. eg. flat rate $1 per 10 grains or part thereof which would add $79 to a $24.50 box of 50 x 158 grain .38 special (if I got the math right) which I found here:

14As Congress readies to vote on extending the
15ban on plastic weapons able to avoid detection by metal detectors, Chuck Schumer is pushing for an amendment which would require a permanent metal piece. Right now they have an easily removable metal piece.
Of course the NRA is opposed (?) so it’s not expected to pass. Think about that the next time you’re on a plane.
Vintagemomma, I remember when so many things were declared illegal if hoarded, such as crates of light bulbs, bathroom tissue and whatever was on the ration list. I would revive that law and add ammo to it. More than two rounds and you do the perp walk.
