The Fed to cut rates again in March but effectiveness challenged: Reuters poll.

Edit: The Federal Reserve will cut U.S. interest rates by 25 basis points later this month but it is a close call, according to a Reuters poll of economists who have substantially raised their forecasts for the chances of a recession following the coronavirus outbreak.

“A rate cut by the Fed, especially now, so early in the coronavirus episode, is terribly ill-considered.

If we get a bunch of new cases or deaths…does the Fed easing have persistent benefits to the stock market – because it certainly is going to do next to nothing to directly boost the economy,”

“They just fired off their bazooka, and if it does no good, then what? The argument that the Fed should be early and aggressive and get ahead of events is persuasive, but in this case, when there is little to nothing the Fed can do to prevent the more adverse scenarios, I just don’t buy it.”

‘This Is Your Brain on Capitalism’: CNBC Market Analyst Rick Santelli Calls for Infecting Global Population With Coronavirus to Help Wall Street

Edit: ”The projected death of 11 million Americans would be a fair price to pay for better long term stock growth, says a capitalist extremist.”

Santelli, who is credited with helping kick off the racist, extreme right-wing Tea Party movement in February 2009 by ranting about then-President Barack Obama’s Homeowners Affordability and Stability Plan, told CNBC anchor Kelly Evans Thursday that the “catalyst” for Thursday’s market decline was local news reports on the virus.

“Just watch your local news,” said Santelli. “There’s your catalyst.”
“All I know is, I think about how the world would be if you tried to quarantine everybody because of the generic-type flu,” Santelli continued. “Now, I’m not saying this is the generic-type flu—but maybe we’d be just better off if we gave it to everybody.”
“And then in a month, it would be over,” Santelli continued, “because the mortality rate of this probably isn’t going to be any different if we did it that way than the long-term picture, but the difference is we’re wreaking havoc on global and domestic economies.”

Progressives and market observers were quick to mock Santelli’s comments.
“I sometimes worry after doing TV interviews that I may have gotten a fact wrong, or over-simplified an argument, or advocated for a Darwinian genocide to protect the stock market like this gentleman did,” tweeted political science professor Seth Masket.
But the real world effects of what Santelli called for were no joke, said The Nation’s Jeet Heer.
“Assuming the most conservative estimates of 0.5% mortality, this is a call for the death of 37,500,000 people worldwide or 1,750,000 Americans, all in order to shore up the stock market,” Heer said.

megasoid , See my market prediction yesterday on the previous thread [that Dow off 2K today], and an update a few minutes ago [Dow off ~700pts, crude oil down 7.5%/$3.50/bbl so far]. The Trumpian economic collapse may have begun in earnest…

    .
About the first ‘toon, the “BYEDON 2020” one, where can I get some signs?
Trump/Pence signs are proliferating around here, I’d like to pound some “BYEDON” ones in front of a few.
Hell, one of my neighbors has a huge T flag flying, alongside one I can’t make out, although it seems to have a ‘3%’, which may be a militia nutjob thing.

    5
  6. megasoid says:

Sandridge @ 5 This one? I’ll keep an eye out.

I’ll take a SWAG and predict the Dow dives -2000 tomorrow… Trumpette will be hiding out on a golf course.
Per the signs, I pull up the realtor spike signage that crops up on our rental property, pull the sign and toss it (or keep it if its foam core) while keeping the spike. ake your sign at Kinko’s or print one on computer for copies. Put it on a piece of foam core board and re spike it for your rebuttal.

    6
  7. Sandridge says:

megasoid @6, Yep, market crash in progress. Crude is cratering, off 8% now, fixing to enter $41/bbl range any minute now [this is due to transport sectors tanking mostly].

And exactly as I predicted, Comrade Donnei bailed on a scheduled visit to the CDC, and is headed for his Mar-A-Pendejo hideout for the weekend.

“I guarantee you that if I’m the last man standing and I’m still the majority leader, it ain’t happening. I can promise you,” McConnell added.”

    Bidens delusional perspective
“This is not the Republican Party,” he added, citing his relationships with “my Republican friends in the House and Senate.”
“I just think there is a way, and the thing that will fundamentally change things is with Donald Trump out of the White House — not a joke — you will see an epiphany occur among many of my Republican friends,”

Don’t get me wrong I will vote for biden and his bi-partisan delusions over demented donnie, and recommend the same for all.
But I just don’t expect much good to come from him. That is reason that Party must be taken over by progressives and force joe to give up on his fantasy’s

    9
  10. Sandridge says:

Ormond Otvos @8, Yep, after a couple of major slides today, stocks clawed back, mostly on some good ‘jobs creation’ numbers.
But the commodities markets cratered, oil slid almost 10% today, down to $41.57/bbl [fracking production becomes a loser below this aprx price]. Mostly in anticipation of a major economic slow down due to the Covid-19 scare and the ‘Trump factors’ [tariffs, debt, deficits, etc].

    10
  11. A BYEDON sign would be good in Alaska too if we could just get rid of that nasty old Don Young.

    11
  12. Sandridge says:

    Ormond Otvos @8, “Buy Tesla”.
    PS– Not buying stocks now.
Can’t afford a new Tesla or Rivian, but I’ve been looking at used EV’s, might just find the ‘right one’ someday.

I have almost totally switched my garden equipment over to electric stuff. Bought a battery electric lawn tractor a year ago and would never ever go back to a gas tractor/riding mower [cost as much as a decent used car though, before big discount].
Just bought a new self-propelled lithium-battery electric mower [urk, 400 clams–on sale] for the small stuff. My weed cutters [except one gas] and chainsaws have been electric for decades [battery and corded types].
Waiting for a big low priced EV SUV [which likely won’t happen].

    12
  13. Sandridge says:

    What K says @9, times 10000.
We DO NOT need any damned delusional “bipartisanship” bullshit whatsoever.
There is absolutely no chance of the Rethugs ever working with Democrats for anything [with some very minor exceptions like the COVID bill, which they had to do].
They have become authoritarian, theocratic Nazi-Soviets, better suited to a place like Kimmy’s DPRK, asskissing their beloved Dear Leader Donnei.

If anybody should understand this it should be Biden [and Obama], after eight effing years of getting shafted by the ‘Thugs.

Blue no matter who, but Biden was near the bottom of my list…
If he doesn’t ace his VP pick, and ramp up his pace, Joe could blow the whole enchilada.

On Friday, AIPAC announced that two attendees had tested positive for COVID-19 coronavirus.

Edit: Concern grows over which political leaders may have contracted coronavirus at AIPAC conference

Vice President Mike Pence and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) were among the political leaders who attended the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) conference. On Friday, AIPAC announced…
Israel ordered the self-quarantine of citizens who had attended the conference, but there are no such precautions in the United States.
Despite the coronavirus outbreak, AIPAC did not cancel the conference.

Both of our Democratic Senators are working with our Democratic Governor, unlike the science denying Republicons.

CPAC attendees potentially exposed to COVID-19
    March 7, 2020

Edit: Earlier today, the New Jersey Department of Health notified the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) that a person confirmed to have Coronavirus Disease 2019, or COVID-19, was in Maryland from February 27-March 1 attending the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in National Harbor. Those who attended or worked at the conference may be at some risk for acquiring COVID-19.

MDH immediately notified the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the governor’s office notified officials at the White House and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“Immediately after learning of this individual’s interactions in our state, we began coordinating with the White House, the CDC and federal officials, the New Jersey Department of Health, Prince George’s County officials, and conference organizers,” said Governor Hogan. “Due to the scale of this conference, we are urging attendees who are experiencing flu-like symptoms to immediately reach out to their health care provider. We are providing this update not to unnecessarily raise alarm, but in the interest of full transparency and out of an abundance of caution.”

MDH recommends that members of the public who attended this event monitor themselves for symptoms of a respiratory infection including fever, cold-like symptoms, cough, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.

Persons who attended this event should check their temperature twice a day and notify their health care provider and local health department if their temperature exceeds 100.4 or if they develop a respiratory illness. They should remain at home until they receive instructions about the next steps from their health care provider or local health department.

k, dovetailing with mention of the idiocracy, Suckerberg and Co. have banned facemask ads on Faceplant. Sure why not, since people can spread COVID-19 for a week or two before being aware that they are sick. Wearing face masks would be a courtesy to others as well as prevent the spread of the disease to a small degree. We can’t have courtesy or sanity in the world of Republicons.

  30. Jane & PKM says:

megasoid, excellent article, thank you. However, must note a correction in the article.

When more is not better. Most of you at the WMDBS probably already know this. So restating: do not MIX cleaning fluids such as ethanol, hydrogen peroxide or bleach. Want to literally bomb your bathrooms? If so, a combination of bleach and ammonia will accomplish that while doing effective lung cleaning, too, if you don’t mind a little scarring of the lung tissue. In the correct proportion that will clean walls minus the scrubbing, if you don’t mind a gaping hole or two in your walls.

    • This article was amended on 7 March 2020. An earlier version wrongly stated that “a solution of ethanol, hydrogen peroxide and bleach will disinfect surfaces”. It is dangerous to combine such substances. It now states correctly that “a solution of ethanol, hydrogen peroxide or bleach will disinfect surfaces”.

    31
  31. Can’t stress enough about what Jane & PKM said about not mixing chemicals. That’s exactly the kind of social media crap that gets people killed. Especially innocent children.
Learned this stuff in Boy Scouts 45 years ago.

    Jane & PKM @ 31 – P.P. @32

Ah yes, the Callout. I usually edit wordy content but felt if people really want to know 9 different reasons about anything, they would examine the minutiae of correction as well. Good catch!

Maybe THIS is my last post ( :-{p>

    33
  33. Jane & PKM says:

megasoid, trust in the guys. We love this stuff. Right, P.P.? Let’s work with hydrogen peroxide alone. What some folks keep in the medicine cabinet is a <1% solution. The kosher grade or Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide Kosher (32%) generally arrives in a 30 gallon drum, (your second "clue.") That does not mean it is 32% stronger than 1%; it's way stronger. It's graded on a corrosivity curve not dissimilar to geometric progression. For simplicity call it a HEAVY oxidizer, as it will set a wooden pallet on fire. Responsible warehouses store it separate from other chemicals and on special pallets. Second clue, if your product comes with a Material Data Safety Sheet (MSDS) then we're talking PEL (permissible exposure limits), other safety/techie stuff, and probably "too much information". In other words, if you don't want to read that much, don't use it.

    https://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/MSDS

If you own a couple of small children or have a couple of small grandchildren who own you, Google household chemicals and cleansers that do not mix and maybe check the barn or garage for just what is so fascinating to those budding junior chemists. Preferably before they do serious harm to themselves, burn the place down, or send the roof into the street.

It’s like this Grandma, Grandpa, Mom and Dad. That stuff you store high and locked to keep curious little ones from drinking it becomes a lot more exciting when those toddlers become able to drag furniture to reach it. Call it the age when they transition from drinking anything to becoming young rocket scientists who will launch anything.

    34
  34. Megasoid:
No call-out intended. I like your posts. And yeah, if you put a caveat after everything, it’d be like the legal warnings at the end of ads on steroids. But in the years since they told us about mixing bleach and ammonia producing chlorine gas, I’ve had to warn people several times against mixing cleaning products. And after working in chemical plants around some folks who aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed, I tend to assume the worst.

    35
  35. Jane & PKM:
Around twenty years ago, I worked on a job northeast of Houston for a couple of weeks on a unit that made hydrogen peroxide. We were demoing pipe mangled when a reactor exploded. I wasn’t there for that. Anyhoo, they found 2 ton chunks of reactor hundreds of yards away. I’d never noticed the solution percentage on the bottles in the bathroom before. It was eye opening.

    36
  36. Jane & PKM says:

megasoid, as P.P. stated no “call out” was intended. Forgive us? Please? If anything we’d give you a shout out for all the information you provide. Is there a loud, louder loudest button for “you’re the bestest”?

P.P. fun with reactors and distillation processes. That and old mine tailings watching aluminum cans disappear. 70%+ on a label, playful stuff. If people only knew what some of those truck placards meant, there would be less tailgating on the freeways. Or, what the Chamber of Commerce means by “clean” microchip industry or microelectronics. Piranha etch?
