COVID-45, the “small government” virus that Grover Norquist has always wanted. Grover got his dream, now let’s give him and his fellow Republicons a well deserved nightmare when we rebuild this mess. Let’s omit the slavery part that has always been the root of the flaws in our democracy as we rebuild.

I think those could be described as “painfully funny.” Almost too true to be funny. Almost.

  4. With Millions Out of Work in Unparalleled Moment, Trump Tells States to Hold Back Unemployment Numbers.

“The Trump administration would apparently rather you not hear those numbers.”

Edit: President Donald Trump’s Labor Department is asking states not to release hard unemployment numbers, the latest attempt by the White House to downplay the economic and real-world consequences of the coronavirus outbreak.

The New York Times broke the story Thursday night, citing an email sent to state officials from Office of Employment Insurance administrator Gay Gilbert asking states to only “provide information using generalities to describe claims levels (very high, large increase)” until the Labor Department releases its numbers on March 26. “States should not provide numeric values to the public,” said Gilbert.

Investment bank Goldman Sachs is predicting that claims increased by 2.25 million in the last week, a “historic and frankly apocalyptic surge” as Wall Street Journal reporter Micahel Derby described it, with no historical parallel in U.S. history.

The numbers are so unique, New School economist James Parrrott told Gothamist, because the damage being done by the virus has no precedent in modern history. “In a recession, you’ll see sort of episodic layoffs and business closings,” said Parrott. “The numbers mount up over time. This was a completely different situation where for public health reasons… businesses were ordered to close en masse. So that is why we’ve never had anything like that before.”

Observers were unimpressed by the latest White House attempt to clamp down on information which could reflect poorly on Trump’s handling of the crisis.

New York Times opinion editor Binyamin Applebaum tweeted sarcastically. “I can only imagine how much markets would enjoy a little more uncertainty.”
Predictions on Friday from analysts claimed that the economy could contract by as much as 14% in the second quarter—a level of economic decline not seen since World War II.

Princeton University historian Matt Karp said the data makes clear it’s past time for a massive government intervention in the economy.
“How long can American society survive this kind of mass unemployment?” Karp tweeted. “Is even an epic $3T stimulus enough?”

“Seems like we need heroic WW2-style govt planning efforts to ramp up healthcare capacity, so the country can get back to work by May, even as hundreds of thousands get sick,” Karp said.

Checked the financial markets earlier, they were just drifting in positive territory.
I just got around to checking again and a sharp downward spike had begun just a bit ago… hmmmm… then looked to find that a COVID-45 presscon had just started.
Oh well, nothing major, DJI is only off ~100pts now, crude is slightly down.

All this after a minor dead cat bounce yesterday.
Wait until the upcoming unemployment stats take it all down, real soon.

Gov Abbott’s presscon yesterday was mostly a self-congratulatory CYA.

As #WhereIsJoe Biden Trends, Sanders to Host Coronavirus Roundtable to Address Pandemic

“Trump is in front of the cameras every day, reassuring people, putting on the appearance of ‘leadership,'” said one Democratic critic. “Where is Biden? Why isn’t he dominating the airwaves?”

Edit: While users on social media asked Friday why Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden appears to be missing in action on the coronvirus crisis—causing the #WhereIsJoe hashtag to trend— Sen. Bernie Sanders indicated his intention to remain focused on the global pandemic by announcing a virtual roundtable event focused on the crisis.

The campaigns of both remaining Democratic contenders have been dramatically curtailed by the infectious disease, but Sanders—who remains a sitting member of the U.S. Senate—has been much more active and vocal on the subject of how to manage the outbreak over the last week, even as his presidential hopes have been dashed by repeated primary losses to Biden.

On Tuesday, Sanders released a blueprint for what he believes is necessary to fight the pandemic while also protecting working families and the nation’s most vulnerable from economic fallout. Called “An Emergency Response to the Coronavirus Pandemic,” the plan sets forth a series of principles alongside detailed policies that guarantee healthcare coverage related to both testing and treatment of the virus be fully covered at no cost, would establish an Emergency Economic Finance Agency to manage the crisis, and create a separate oversight agency designed to protect consumers from price-gouging and corporate corruption.

While Biden also released a coronavirus action proposal—the “Plan to Combat Coronavirus (Covid-19) and Prepare for Future Global Health Threats”—the former vice president has been noticeably absent from the airwaves despite largely being seen as the presumptive Democratic nominee. Biden has pitched himself as the best candidate to take on President Donald Trump over his presidential mismanagement and crass leadership—a critique that others say is now more relevant than ever given Trump’s egregious handling of the coronavirus outbreak.

As Peter Daou, Democratic operative and Sanders supporter, stated on Twitter:

“While Bernie Sanders leads,” wrote historian Christo Aivalis, “Joe Biden is hiding. In this crucial moment, Americans need leadership, and they aren’t getting from the man already being crowned as the Democratic nominee.”

Journalist and co-founder of The Intercept Jeremy Scahill, tweeted:
“We were all told that we desperately need Joe Biden’s leadership and experience. Now all we have to do is find him.”

WATCH: Dr. Fauci facepalms right behind Trump after he rants about ‘Deep State Department’

Dr. Anthony Fauci was caught on camera putting his hand over his face during one of President Donald Trump’s rants about the “deep state” on Friday.
While at a press conference about the coronavirus pandemic, Trump said that he would like to see Secretary of State Mike Pompeo “go back to the State Department — or as they call it, the Deep State Department — and do his job.”
At this point, Fauci facepalmed even as Trump kept talking.

  9. New abc poll claims that a majority of americans (55%) approve of the demented ones handling of the coronavirus panic.

This leaves one with two possible conclusions
    1) That so many people are so stupid that progress and sanity are impossible against the weight of not just the ignorant but those who are arrogant about their ignorance and stupidity like it is a personal virtue.
    2) The polls are being hacked.
Considering the outsized role that polls have in the US public discourse, not just for candidates but on issues and initiatives as well, that for nefarious players not to target them is inconceivable ( yes I do know what the word means)
Voting rolls have been hacked, voting machines have ben hacked, public comments to agencies have been hacked ( i.e. FCC on Net Neutrality)
With that background why would the polls stand inviolate against this interference?
Algorithms that compute data could be tilted, data collection by phone polls could be aimed at bots and trolls, on the ground interviewers could be partisan hacks working to achieve desired results.
    Its an either/or situation.
If americans are this stupid it’s time to wrap it up and commit to a political Thelma and Louise ending since nothing else is possible against such a solid wall of inbred ignorance, stupidity, greed and bigotry.
If the polls are hacked ignore them and make a movement to outlaw them.
