  1. Ralph Northam (D) just beat Ed Gillespie (R) by a good measure and the difference is still growing. The entire Dem slate was elected! Virginia has its first African American Lt. Governor. Still waiting on a full count of how many Dems were elected to the leg etc. Unfortunately, it is now way too cold for me to do my happy dance all up and downtime street!

    1
  2. VA Delegate Bob Marshall, who submitted Virginia’s bathroom bill, was just defeated by Danica Roem, who I believe will be the country’s first openly transgender state legislator.

    2
  3. VA just elected the first African American to a statewide office in 25 years, they also elected 2 Latinas to the house of delegates and a transgender woman all firsts! The top issues, health care and gun control! Ay attention Democrats!

  4. Opinionated Hussy says:

We just have some little-bitty ole municipal elections here, but the votes are all going either Dems, or ‘anybody who’s not already in office’.

    Change is a-comin’, please God.

    4
  5. Orangina has apparently already “deleted” his tweets supporting Gillespie except, of course, it doesn’t work that way.

    5
  6. Deb,
And don’t forget VA’s 1st Asian-American female delegate, Kathy Tran.
One of the more surreal flyers I saw this cycle was her Latina opponent accusing her of racism. One of Tran’s flyers had pictures of werewolf and Jason Halloween masks followed by a picture of her opponent and the caption “And now for something really scary”
The response was a flyer claiming that calling a Hispanic woman “scary” was racist.
I called up the local RNC office and opened the conversation with “are you effing high?” and the conversation went downhill from there.

The 2nd weirdest mailing I saw was from some group with the word “values” in its name that told me to vote for Gillespie because he, among other things, opposed gay marriage.

The only other Republican message I saw was the near constant whining about taxes. It was not pretty.

    6
  7. For giggles I took a quick look at FauxNews. You’ll never guess what I saw.

“Trump blames Gillespie for loss in VA race: He ‘did not embrace me’.”

    7
  8. My trans son and I jointly celebrated Danica Roem’s election in Virginia, and I got the birthday presents I wanted thanks to Virginia, New Jersey and New York City. It’s cold here too, so I’ll do my happy dance in the house.

    8
  9. Proud to say Virginia is my (adopted) state! Hope House of Delegates flips–close.

    9
  10. Is this what’s known as a win-win?
    Or maybe it’s a win-win-win…

    10
  11. Darned straight Arakasi, Tran’s numbers hadn’t come in yet. There are still 5 races that are within 150 votes or less so it will come down to absentees another reason to be grateful to people like Susan for helping out with Ballot Boards.

One year after Trump’s victory, Virginia elected:
First transgender delegate in the country
First out-lesbian delegate in the state
First Asian American woman delegate in the state
First two Latina delegates in the state
First Democratic Socialist candidate in the state

Perhaps the best part AK Lynn is that Bob Marshall, the guy who proudly called himself Virginia’s “homophobe in Chief” and authored the state’s bathroom bill, just lost “biggly” to the ranswoman! It doesn’t get much better than that!

Furthermore, it is looking like Dems will have veto power over the next post census electoral map, the first time that’s happened since 1991.This is shaping up to be the biggest democratic pick up since 1899.

    11
  12. Local elections here in Las Cruces also. Progressives won beating one teabagger incumbent councilcritter, to borrow from JJ and one open seat where, during a canidate forum one of the candidates was quoting from the New Testament. Not bad except we were in a synagogue at the time. She lost 70 to 30 percent

    12
  13. Correction to maggie @ #1: Virginia’s 1st African-American Lt Gov was Douglas Wilder, elected in 1985. He was also elected Governor in 1989.

This is great, isn’t it? I may even stop screaming “WTF!” out the front door every morning when I remember who’s President. The neighbors would be happier, though I think one or two of them might miss it by this time. I sure hope this is a foretaste of 2018 and even more of 2020.

    13
  14. Tilphousia says:

Wheeoh!!!! The Virginia House gained 14 seats a couple more in play. Did my happy dance in the house as it was raining and too cold to run up and down outside.

  15. two crows says:

Here in St. Pete, our Democratic mayor survived.

His opponent — Rick Baker — was favored to win. But toward the end of the race, his desperation was showing. He started airing ads that were blatantly false. The courts made him stop one of them — so he waited till the last week, when there wouldn’t be time to stop him a second time — and came out with a new one: a woman tells the camera that one of the Kriseman’s staff members was accused of misconduct when he was a high school teacher. She implies but never says it was sexual in nature. She says the court records are sealed — [so we can’t check her story, of course.] Then, at the end she says, “I’ll never forgive Rick Kriseman for hiring someone who AUTHORITIES SAY did such a horrible thing. Of course, she fails to mention that he was never found guilty of anything or even what actual crime he was accused of. And that assumes there was any such case.

Kriseman soundly beat Baker. Thank all that is good.

Oh, and pRick Scott is term-limited out next year.
Who knows? Perhaps we’ll even get a governor who doesn’t fire any staff member who uses the words “climate” and “change” in the same sentence. Wouldn’t that be lovely?

    15
  16. two crows says:

    @ Deb:
YAYAYAYAYAYAY! I hadn’t heard about the list you posted. That is great news indeed!
If any Republican tries to say the Virginia outcome was not a referendum against Tweety, this list will put the lie to that claim in a hurry.

    16
  17. So the Suckers are catching on. Now for some of the people all of the time. Send Don the Con your love.

    17
  18. Opinionated Hussy says:

@Rick…’There’s going to be so much winning…you’re going to get tired of winning!’…..NOT!!!

    18
  19. Proud to be a Virginian and a friend of Lee J. Carter and his lovely wife, Stephanie! Those two worked SO HARD on his election!

At their victory party last night, Lee heard he’d made the national news – Democratic-Socialist defeats incumbent in traditionally Republican seat.

    Congratulations, Lee!

    19
  20. So how long’s it gonna be before Donnie Douchebag starts tweeting about illegal Mexicans voting illegally to illegally elect all those illegal Democrats?
    Illegally?

    20
  21. Here in NJ the republicans lost bigly. We have a new progressive governor and the Christie cronies are mostly gone. Voters approved more funding for public libraries. YES! They also voted to prevent monies from environmental settlements from being used (as Christie did) for any purpose other than cleaning up of the messes they left here. YES! 2018 is coming and the R’s will lose even more. No more Trumpiness in this state!

    21
  22. Rhea you are right! All I could remember last night (don’t ask me why) was that Wilder had been a mayor at one time! Now must find time to drive by all the houses in my areas that had Gillespie BANNERS – not just yard signs – and see how they look all wiped out!

    23
  23. Obama pointed out this morning, this is what happens when people vote.

I would only add, and Russians don’t interfere and collude.

    24
  24. Lunargent says:

Finally, the Dem’s had a good night. Boy, did we need it!

May it be the first of many.

So many women. So many people of color. I’m so encouraged that, bit by tiny bit, the government is starting to look more like the electorate.

    Stay Woke, America!
