Things That Happened That Make Me Smile From My Toes To My Nose

November 08, 2017 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Okay, the conservatives in Virginia sent out this red-baiting piece on Lee Carter …

And, by gawd, he won his election anyway.

And don’t you think it’s a tad audacious for Trump Republicans to send out a mailer with bad old Russians on it?

The rightwing Republican who wrote the anti-transgender bathroom bill got beat …

… by a transgender woman.

Praise Lady Karma, y’all.

Manchester, New Hampshire, has its first female mayor.

And, Hoboken, New Jersey, elected Ravinder Bhalla as its mayor Tuesday night, which will make Bhalla the first Sikh American to be elected mayor of the city.

St. Paul, Minnesota has it’s first African American mayor.  Kathy Tran, a former Vietnamese refugee, became the first Asian-American woman to join Virginia’s House of Delegates. Cathy Murillo’s victory on Tuesday makes her the first Latina mayor of Santa Barbara, California.

The grins could go on and on.  But the best grin is that they are all Democrats.

Thanks to everybody for the heads up.

Be social and share!

  1. To quote Han Solo: “good job- don’t get cocky…”

  2. It’s been such a relief to see people rejecting Trumpism-without-Trump. Unfortunately, in my city of Fredericksburg a $12 million bond issue that would have provided much needed updating and expanding of a local park was defeated. It would have increased the number of soccer fields for kids and generally would have helped make the town more friendly for the people who LIVE here and not just for the tourists who pass through with their money.

The “vote no” campaign was run by one guy, probably a Tea Party-er and he riled up the old folks enough to be successful in voting the measure down. On Facebook, one of the disappointed “yes” voters said she’d met a newcomer to town who wanted to know what was available for kids to do. The woman told her that there were plenty of places to drink down main street and wine tours galore outside of town. But if you want something for kids, you’re out of luck.

And I’m sure the fact that it was soccer and not football that was being promoted made a difference too. My husband is 81 and I’m 70 and we voted “yes” because we can look beyond our own selves to recognize the value of improving things for those who come after us. Gah!

  3. @RepubAnon, as a HUGE Han Solo fan, I approve!

I am also proud to call Lee Carter and his lovely wife, Sherrie, friends and fellow members of Bull Run Unitarian Universalists.

It was a great day for BRUU, y’all!

I feel better this morning than I have in a year. These are the Americans who will make us great again.

  6. Jane & PKM says:

Congratulations to the candidates, the Virginia Democratic Party and the people of Virginia!

Donnie, fwiw, Ed didn’t lose because he failed to fluff you. He lost because of a concept foreign to you and too many Republicans. Education, health care, roads, etc: call it working for common goals. In other words, governance. Something at which the lot of you are an epic failure.

+1, Love the SW epi IV reference, except on Planet Micr, the Evil Empire remains the New York Yankees not the snacilbupeR.

This is fine and dandy, but we could stand to win D seats in Texas. “National” Democrats love to come here, collect checks, and leave the local Ds to attempt to be elected against a tsunami of money for the Republicans.

Democrats winning anywhere is always encouraging.

  11. two crows says:

It seems Trump is reminding people of the basic principles of our nation – one of which is Diversity Is Good. And he’s hammering home Hillary’s message of last year, “We’re Stronger Together.”

I never, ever, ever thought I’d be typing these words, “Thank you Donald Trump. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

  12. All this winning– will we tire of it?? (Nope!)
It was all most encouraging, especially the “revenge” winners who took down those who disparaged their ideas.
And hello Bull Run UUs from us UUs of Lancaster, PA! Congrats on a reasonable human being winning something– how refreshing it is!
