Death Is Just Like Golf

Just let him keep talking, Laura.

President Donald Trump on Monday likened police officers who commit acts of brutality to golfers who “choke” and miss a 3-foot putt, resisting the real-time efforts of a conservative cable news ally to steer him away from the comparison.

When a golfer chokes, the ball is still okay.

The golfer loses a bet with his fellow players.

When a policeman chokes … well, George Floyd.

Now go to Google and ask “men who were choked by police.”

Last night I heard that more police have been killed by Coronavirus than killed in the line of duty.

Thanks to Steven for the heads up.

  1. well, I’ve certainly choked more than my share of three-foot putts. don’t recall anyone’s spinal cord being severed as a result tho…

  2. The myth that police work is the most dangerous civilian occupation has been a Rethuglikan trope forever. Let’s put it to rest.
Not that policing isn’t potentially and occasionally hazardous and aggravating. It just isn’t near as bad as those with that old ‘LawNOrder’ mindset keep trying to make everyone believe.

It is –not– the most dangerous career in the USA by far, neither for injuries or fatalities, per capita rate by occupation.

Policework isn’t even listed in a table of the top ten most dangerous workplaces, in a cursory check of Wikipedia:

Trumpf’s attempt at an original thought was even too crazy for Laura Ingraham? Doubt it. This just shows how shallow his mind is.
I wonder what good peace officers think about his trivializing and making stupid excuses for bad cops. I would hope they would say in public how completely awful his remarks were.
Another day, another dozen stupid dangerous things come out of his mouth.
I think he did have a stroke.

  4. And another similarity between golf and police shootings, you keep your own score, especially if no one has a phone out recording the incident.

As someone who wrote a book on police funeral planning and travels the country training agencies on how to do it, I can confirm that as of this writing 99 law enforcement officers have died from COVID-19 so far this year, the first time something other than gunfire has topped the causes of death in many years. For the purposes of receiving federal line-of-duty death benefits, officers who die from the virus are considered to have contracted it while in the line of duty regardless of how they got it, whether from infected family members or in the course of their duties. I suppose this determination comes from the belief that LEOs must be available to report for duty whenever they are called and are therefore on duty 24/7/365. The current federal Public Safety Officer death benefit pays $365,670 to the surviving family of an officer deemed to have been killed in the line of duty. So now you have a dollar figure for how much “blue lives” matter to our government. IMHO, in a just world, survivors of the black lives they’ve stolen deserve at least twice as much.

Donna, I agree with your last comment.
