Another Shutdown?

July 19, 2015 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Y’all, this is my favorite story in a while.

Okay, it starts with congressional Republicans.  That right there ought to clue you that something crazy is fixing to happen.

There is a must-pass omnibus appropriations bill if congress expects to keep their August recess.

Here’s the crazy:  The bill for funding the Interior Department adds a little ditty about displaying Confederate flags on graves in federal cemeteries and the sale of Confederate flags in national park gift stores.

Oh hell, no.

So Democrats have hunkered down and said, “Okay, Boys, let’s play this game.”

Democrats have offered a deal.

House Democrats are floating a legislative deal linking the thorny Confederate flag debate with expanded voting rights. […]

Rep. James Clyburn (S.C.), the third-ranking House Democrat, said Thursday that Democratic leaders will drop their push to attach flag-related amendments to appropriations bills, freeing Republicans to pursue their spending agenda, if GOP leaders will agree to consider an update to the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a central part of which was gutted by the Supreme Court in 2013.

That kinda says, “Oh hell yeah you can fly your crazybutt flags as long everybody knows what you stand for and what we Democrats won’t stand for.”

It’s not that big a stretch.  Let me remind Republicans that President Bush and 98 members of the United States Senate – Republicans included – voted to extend the Voting Rights Act in 2006.  That’s like 7 years ago which might be a tad more contemporary than some damn flag created in 1861.

“[T]he members of the Congressional Black Caucus and the full Democratic Caucus are willing to sit down with the Speaker and work out a way for us to allow the proper display and utilization of … the flag in certain instances if he would only sit down with us and work out an appropriate addressing of the amendments to the Voting Rights Act,” Clyburn said during a press briefing.

Sounds like a fair deal to me.

Thanks to Kyle for the heads up.

Playing Catch-Up

I know this is kinda old news, but now Donald Trump is taking on John McCain.

First shot:

McCain gets upset with Trump’s appearance in Phoenix and says that Trump is hurting the Republican Party by “firing up the crazies.”

Trump trumps:

TrumpDoesn'tKnow“He’s not a war hero,” Trump, a Republican running for president, said of McCain. “I like people that weren’t captured. “He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”

Followed by giant cringing sound that is not heard by Trump.  When asked if he owed McCain an apology …

“No, not at all… Very importantly, I got a standing ovation, the biggest ovation they had all weekend, by far. When I left the room, it was a total standing ovation. It was wonderful to see. Nobody was insulted…. I’m very disappointed in John McCain because the vets are horribly treated in this country.”

We can only hope he keeps it up.  I can’t wait to hear what he says about Lindsey Graham.

I Don’t Know What I Did To Deserve This Much Fun But It Must Have Been Pretty Damn Wonderful

It was on The Hill this morning.

Perry started it —

The comment came hours after Perry issued a blistering statement that said Trump was mistaken on border security and only offered “a toxic mix of demagoguery and nonsense.”

And Trump ended it.

The Guiltier You Are, The More Lawyers You Need

Y’all, I don’t know if even OJ ran up legal bills like this.  From The Texas Lawyer.

Perry’s report shows that he brought in only $685 in contributions, but he spent $1.48 million. That means that his legal defense costs represent 69 percent of his spending. Perry only had $1.28 million left in his campaign account as of June 30, which means that if his legal costs continue accumulating at the same pace, he will run out of money unless contributions increase.

Gosh, wouldn’t that be a shame?

Bubba has a saying that guilty people need a great lawyer because anybody can get an innocent person off.

I think the only reason Perry is running for President is to raise the money today his lawyers.  He knows he cannot win.

Fun With Guns: Shoot Me or Insult Me, But Please Not Both

Okay, in Virginia a man “accidentally” shot a woman in the forearm.

Douglas Ward originally was charged with misdemeanor reckless handling of a firearm. The charge was upgraded last week to felony charges of unlawful wounding and unlawful shooting at a building.

The shooting occurred on June 6. Ward told police that he was attempting to shoot a rabid raccoon.

Okay, it’s bad enough that you shoot her.  But the whole mistaken identity of a rabid raccoon was completely unnecessary.

Completely.

Before You Buy Lunch

I just wanted you to know that

Fox News radio host Todd Starnes dubbed Chick-fil-A “the official chicken of Jesus” in a fiery tirade against same-sex marriage over the weekend.

starnesolyStarnes is frighteningly over concerned with gay people, and sees marriage equality as “an attack on religious liberty.”

Yes, indeed, a little known law of physics is that lessening other people’s liberty, you increase your own.

Thanks to Vickie for the heads up.
