This is the way we thank Mexico after they paid for the wall?

No, no, no, Corona beer is the antidote not the cause. Must drink more beer.

  4. Chloe Bear,
I’ve heard Dr. Pepper can provide medical assistance too.

  5. No. I was laughing before I got through the entire sentence. FYI, I always order Negro Modelo.

  6. In other news, at the moment it’s not looking good for Dr. Eliz Markowitz in the TX Senate TX-28 race. Currently at ~ 59-41 for the Rethug, but it’s very early and I have no idea how the precincts in Ft Bend line out.

  7. On beer, I’ve had one or two Coronas, that’s it. Just another insipid Bud Lite or Schlitz or whatever, dog piss.
    .

I’m with AK Lynne @5, Cerveza Negra Modelo is one of the excellent Mexican beers available [it’s a dark beer comparable to Shiner Bock or Guinness Stout].
Living in the Valley I bought my Negra Modelo directly from the brewery distributors in Matamoros or Reynosa. I bought on average a case per month, on regular cross-border shopping trips. I’d take the empty case with us, pull in the Modelo building, swap it for a full, fresh, one [just bottled a few hours before in Monterrey], hand over ~$3-4 in pesos, and drive away. Of course you had to declare it crossing back, and, iirc, pay the Texas tax. Or maybe that was just for distilled liquor, which was also very inexpensive in the shops– $10-15 for a top scotch/bourbon, etc., ~$3-10 for a fifth of top rums [like Bacardi Ron Añejo].
Ah, the good ol’ days before ‘los drogas’ and all the shooting and kidnapping.

I’m with the Negro Modelo crowd…

On a side note: does Trump think there’s a feminizing effect from drinking Dos Equis?

  10. Not disparaging any of the aforementioned brews, apparently Angela Merkel is gonna have to call trump a weasleheaded f**knugget and name some new STD after him to get him to tweet his disdain for German Beer in order to draw attention to the inability to get Lowenbrau in my neck of the woods. Haven’t seen it in years. Lowenbrau Dark for decades.
It’s an international crime against humanity.

  11. P.P. @10, You’re in need of a trip to Fredericksburg, TX or maybe New Braunfels or San Marcos.
Fred is noted for local beers, a great selection of European beers [name it, they probably gotsit], is a Texas center of viticulture, so you can find some great local wines. Plus lots of other things, like food– German, Tex-Mex, BBQ, yum; my kids go there a lot more than me. NB and SM are also good places to visit or live.
Best beer I ever had was Belgian, ferociously expensive.

  12. And unless I am mistaken, Negro Modelo, Bohemia (another favorite of mine), and generally the dark Mexican beers came from German immigrant brewers to begin with.

    12
  13. And Noche Buena beer at Christmas time. Oh my!

(Sorry, I’m getting beer sentimental since I left Mexico.)

Wow… ‘Think no beer will cause Cavenaugh to resign?
    * hopeful *

  15. Linda Phipps says:

Sandridge – on your opinion of Mexican beer (which I like) – it’s German pilsner, that’s who came over and taught them.

I do love the headline, and yes that’s exactly what Trump would do.

  16. Here is some Texas Hill Country–beer folklore masked as history.

When the American Civil War started, there were a great many Germans living in and around the hill country. Reflecting the populace of the South, some of those folks were pro-Union, some Southern secessionist. And of course, all of them were beer drinkers and many of them were brewers. When push finally came to shove, the supporters of the Confederacy fled south, with their former neighbors, brothers, friends, etc, in hot pursuit, determined to ride-down and murder the supporters of secession.** Some of those who fled South were brewers who took their brewing knowledge and skills into Mexico, which is why — or how — Mexico became a brew-place of good beer.

This recitation may be mostly BS, but it is a great story.

**Even now, in Fredericksburg, there is a monument to one side or the other addressing those who went South, or maybe those who remained, or maybe –its been years since I’ve been there — addressing both sides and the whole dismal history of the era and place.

  17. Linda Phipps @15, Most Mexican cervezas are pilsners per the Wiki link below. Negra Modelo is a ‘dunkel” lager, or dark style beer [or bock like Shiner Bock]. Yes, there were many German immigrants to Mexico, some brewers, and some who re-immigrated from Texas [Wiki below].

Doran @16, Think you’re mixing the history up. The Hill Country Texas Germans tended to be “Freethinkers” and most opposed slavery and the Confederacy [mostly as quietly as possible, surrounded by hostiles].
The only incident I remember involving HC Germans fleeing south was a massacre of HC [from around Comfort, not far from Fred] Germans trying to escape to Mexico:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nueces_massacre

As far as Texas-German brewers migrating to Mexico, nope, most Mexican-Germans [there were many] came directly from Germany with their brewing skills [along with Czechs, etc].
