Black History Month: East Texas Style

February 26, 2019 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Y’all Okay, so I learned that they celebrate Black History Month in East Texas.  They held it at a planation.

No, I’m not kidding.

I guess Dr Ben Carson was booked so they got the only other Black Republican they know – Allen West – to come speak.

The newspaper article says that West read Booker T Washington’s “Cast Down Your Bucket” speech, “a speech that became known as the Atlantic Compromise speech.”

I think they mean Atlanta Compromise, but West is the one with the Ph.D. so what do I know.  If you’re not familiar with the Atlanta Compromise it was the worst damn deal ever made.  It said blacks would not ask for the right to vote, they would not retaliate against racist behavior, they would tolerate segregation and discrimination, that they would receive free basic education, education would be limited to vocational or industrial training, liberal arts education would be prohibited.

Hold on, West said he picked that speech because “it’s about triumph of the individual spirit.”

Forehead, meet tabletop.

I accidentally deleted a mess of emails and then I forgot who sent me this story so whoever sent it remind me.

  1. This was not the best-written newspaper story I’ve ever read, but it seems to say that the original owner of the plantation broke it up and gave it to his former slaves after the Civil War. So how does Tim West own the plantation today? Is it the whole plantation? Did he, or someone before him, buy the pieces back from the former slaves? Or am I missing something? Inquiring minds want to know!

  4. Hard to believe that Tyler, Texas reporter could write that article with a straight face and a clear conscience.

Who read it? West or Carson? You wrote Carson was unavailable.

West did. I just have Carson on my mind because he’s coming to speak here next week.

  8. Hi, JJ:

I think it was me that sent you that, but no credit needed. My friend Ron Gleason in Tyler sent it to me thinking he was hallucinating. He thought perhaps the good people of Tyler had advanced to the 20th Century, but I guess not.

I’m a bit disappointed that you didn’t mention that the keynote was a “Fox commentator” and an employee of the Texas Public Policy Foundation (i.e., bottom scum of the catfish pond.) Irrelevant, but this dude also got an invited discharge from the military for simulating an execution in Iraq (if Wikipedia is to be trusted.) Oh, well, can’t make this shit up.

AK Lynne – Honey, I have kinfolk in Tyler (not that I can have a real conversation with them, you understand), and I can more than believe anyone working for their local paper would write that story and see nothing odd about it at all.
