Ted Cruz and Donald Trump, Jr., are dancin’ around, snorting, and giggling because they think the World Health Organization either doesn’t know the Greek alphabet or that the WTO is playing footsie with China.
The WHO has been naming coronavirus variants after Greek letters of the alphabet, believing this would “be easier and more practical to be discussed by non-scientific audiences.”
Using that system, the following variant should have been called Nu and, after that, Xi.
Well, they were afraid that Nu would get confused with New and it’s not a new virus. Xi is a common last name in China, including the name of their leader and hasn’t Trump calling it the Shina (Trump’s weird version of pronouncing China) virus been enough?

1. Rick Steves, the travel guy, on ‘Fascism in Europe’, and indirectly how it could happen here.
2. And the again excellent “Frontline” series on Jesus Christ and Christianity, which is probably ruffling a lot of feathers. Which in watching it, I can only shake my head and wonder WTF can anyone see in this stuff [fourteen years in a parochial schools environment will do that to you, me anyway, and an agnostic since about fourteen years old].
I know Cruz is just posturing for the knuckle-draggers but I’d like to know what he wants to prosecute Dr. Fauci for. First-degree competence? Aggravated caring if people live or die? Is he still pushing the mad theory that Fauci somehow paid the Chinese to invent covid? Someone should ask him before he sneaks off on his winter vacation.
10I like to think scientists did discover a Nu and a Xi variant and they were both as useless and ineffective as Cruz and Hawley.
11There’s at least four Chinese names that get translitered into “Xi” in the pinyin system. Some native Mandarin speaker should ask Junior if he means 郗, 奚, 習/习, or 席 (sorry if those come out as weird hexadecimal numbers on your browsers). Not that he’d be able to answer, just so that we can see how long his mouth hangs open before he comes up with something.
If it was up to me, we’d start naming the variants don-I, don-II, eric, jared, and Princess Sparkletwat. But WHO and NIH no longer answer the phone when I call with suggestions ….
