And We’re Off …

December 31, 2018 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Okay, it’s official.  Elizabeth Warren has formed an “exploratory committee” to start raising money for her bid for the presidency.

She might as well run. Everybody else is.

At 8:30 this morning, Warren emailed her supporters to ask for money to get this show on the road.

I like her and her anti-Wall Street perspective. I also like how she was one of the first to sass Trump back.  However, I worry about her handling of the whole “Pocahontas” thing. That was a disaster.

I like Elizabeth, but I agree she handled that poorly. What do y’all think of Sherrod Brown?

    1
  2. what was so bad about her AmerIndian statements? Far as I can tell she did very well. She has AmerIndian markers in her genetics and in her family tales. She never claimed to be a member of any tribe nor did she use her genetics to gain anything, unlike the trumpkin lying about bone spirs to get out of military requirements. Good luck to her but I’m sure the democrats will try their best to make a mess of it to the point dimwits will reelect the trumpkin, the king of lies!

  3. A little disaster, maybe? Or not. Or, it could be I’m the only one who ‘heard’ what Senator Warren meant. ;D

Although she did offend some in the Native American communities, probably not beyond repair. She’s proud to have a trace of Native American DNA, she appreciates that does not mean she has lived the Native American experience, and she has empathy combined with historical comprehension. And, she’s smart, so expect she will reach out and repair very early in her campaign.

A Warren/Harris ticket would combine the clout of the east with that of the west. Suck that “Middle America!” Definitely a winner for the popular vote. To make the Electoral College hurdle, maybe Warren/Klobuchar or Harris/Klobuchar.

  4. Opinionated Hussy, there’s much to like about Sherrod Brown. But there are two candidates whose physical voices may not stand the abuse of the campaign trail. He’s one of them who if he’s serious should consult with an ENT and a voice coach, or his raspy voice could strain into medical speechlessness. On the opposite end of the voice spectrum is Kirsten Gillibrand. With a voice on the light & wispy end, she too might want to consider what can be done to ensure her voice is game ready.

    4
  5. Actually, I think she handled well.
She is out in front of it, and Trump can’t make innuendos about it.
    It is done.
Gave her money this am. 2 of my 3 children live in MA and they really like her.

    5
  6. As much as I respect and admire Elizabeth Warren I think she is making a mistake. When the Democrats take back the Senate in 2020 and we elect a Democratic President, I wan t Sen. Warren in the Senate – head of the Senate committee (whatever it is called) overseeing Wall Street and the big banks. Her power there would earth-shattering. Maybe then we can get some accountability re. the crookedness and greed of those two entities.Damn sure we will never get it from Republicans.

Having said that, I will certainly vote for her if she gets the nomination.

    6
  7. I’m with Bob Boland on this. She will be Hell-on-Wheels in the Senate Dem Majority.

Having said that, the level of discourse in the upcoming campaign season just went up to 11. She is so smart, so articulate and so composed, she will reel in primary voters just by opening her mouth. I’ve been to a couple of fundraisers for her here in DC and she is just magical in front of a group.

    7
  8. dobleremolque says:

What BobBoland and BarbinDC said … the presidency isn’t all there is to remaking (or salvaging, if you prefer) the federal government. She’d make a great Senate Majority Leader and could even be the antidote to the poison the odious Mitch McConnell has inflicted on the nation while he disgraced the leadership job.

    8
  9. Not worried about Massachusetts filling Senator Warren’s seat. They have Deval Patrick, Joe Kennedy III, and a number of other excellent possibilities. As President or Senator, Elizabeth Warren is a great choice. Let 2020 be THE Year of the Women. Kamala Harris or Amy Klobuchar for Vice President. Jennifer Granholm as Secretary of State. Hell, if Hilz still wants in the game, offer her Secretary of Defense or Attorney General. After Donnie, no man can fix this.

    9
  10. I like EW. The Pocahontas attack could have been better handled. Does it portend a similar paralysis as POTUS? Prolly. Not a deal killer, but definitely a stress on the deal. And I’m for a youth movement in the Dem party. I’m for sharply contrasting the snacilbupeR old, fat f*ck candidate with a Dem pairing that can still hop up from a chair. My primary, my Dream Team would be Joe Kennedy III and Beto O’Rourke.

As a backup, and giving away the contrast with the current old, fat POTUS, would be Joe Biden and either Beto or Joe III. Joe and Joe would be marketing heaven.

Now, that said, I hope the national Dems suppress Bernie. I personally align well with him, but he alienates too many inside and outside the Dem party and he doesn’t lead a majority within the Dem party. He needs to stand down and campaign for the Dem pairing in those geographic areas where his followers are concentrated. His message should be “Vote Democratic.” Period.

Now others that interest me positively, in no particular order, include Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Steve Bullock, Mitch Landrieu, Andrew Cuomo, Sherrod Brown, and Kirsten Gillibrand.

Those that interest me negatively, include Chris Murphy, Terry McAuliffe, Deval Patrick, Eric Holder, Julián Castro, Jerry Brown, John Hickenlooper, Amy Klobuchar, Eric Garcetti, and Howard Schultz.

In addition, those folks that have suggested to me that John Kasich could/should leave the nacilbupeR side because he is a “moderate” and be born again as a Dem, should put down their bongs. Even if Kasich were to make such a move, I’d have an impossible time welcoming him, holding his previous condition of GOP-ness against him.

    10
  11. Micr, there’s no one who can reveal the ‘real’ John Kasich quite like Samantha Bee. http://portall.zp.ua/video/the-real-kasich-full-frontal-with-samantha-bee-tbs/id-c6l_NrWKHqZ.html

As for the mess that will be left behind by Donnie. That I’ll leave to the ladies to fix. I’ll be holding Speaker Pelosi’s beer so she has both hands free to dick punch Donnie for the next two years.

    11
  12. Linda Phipps says:

As for Trump using the name “Pocahontas” as a pejorative label, that in itself says more about him and his braindead followers than about her. The only tool that Trump (and again, his followers) has is to use derogatory labels. They have nothing of substance to offer.

    12
  13. “She persists.” Well, persistence does spell success.

    13
  14. Maggie, it would be satisfying to see EW tell MM to sit down and shut up.

    14
  15. I like her values and plans. I love her in the Senate. We can be sure that the toddler in the White House will continue with childish nicknames and hopefully she will ignore them. I like several of the many Dems who are rumored to run. I have an age bias though, ( I am 69). Biden is wonderful but his age is against him. Sanders is not now and never has been a Democrat and we do not need him splitting the vote AGAIN. They are too old. Bloomberg, John Kerry and others have great experience but we need new energy in the party. I am immune to criticism on this age thing, I have been called out elsewhere. I love Pelosi in the House, I love Shalala in the House, I appreciate their knowledge and experience but we need new blood. I will support Kirsten if she is the nominee but will not forget what she did to Al Franken.

    15
  16. I would prefer she stay my Senator, but I shall vote for her in any case.

Heh, another Granny to scold Cheatolini…

    16
  17. Charles R Phillips says:

I like Warren. Kamela Harris is too inexperienced as yet, but VP could work. Very impressed with Brown, voice and all.
    Merkley for VP?

    17
  18. 1) The whole bogus thing about her heritage is irrelevent much like the many of the manufactored “scandals” around Hillary.
    2) I do not think I have ever met anyone from Oklahoma who did NOT claim some native american heritage. Much like every irish claims to be descended from a King.
    3) I like Warren. The way she explains things with out using acronyms or “technicalese” is outstanding. Plus with this pampered bully occupying the wh a school teacher might be what is needed to put him in his palce. but lets wait and see how it shakes out.

    18
  19. Of course I pray shortly after Pelosi is sworn in as Speaker, both the sitting president and his shelf elf vice fatally choke simultaneously on ham sandwiches and in accordance with 3 USC 19 (a)(1) “If, by reason of death, resignation, removal from office, inability, or failure to qualify, there is neither a President nor Vice President to discharge the powers and duties of the office of President, then the Speaker of the House of Representatives shall, upon his resignation as Speaker and as Representative in Congress, act as President.”

“President Pelosi” sounds good to me, if only for a few months. Then she could run in 2020 as the INCUMBENT.

    19
  20. I don’t have any names to toss in. I just want to say that Jane & PKM’s remark that “After Donnie, no man can fix this” made me think of that fine moment in The Lord of the Rings (book or movie) when the most terrifying evil general on the wasted battlefield said to the only knight brave enough to stand against him, “No man can kill me!” and she whipped off her helmet and said, “I am no man.”

It would be fun to see a woman take Donnie down.

    20
  21. Buttermilk Sky says:

    1. “Pocahontas” isn’t even an original trump racist slur. It started with Scott Brown, and it didn’t work for him. Either voters were repulsed by it or they just didn’t get it.

    2. As Rhea says, it would be fun to see a woman take Donnie down (again), but I’m fine with Mueller doing it sooner. And when we have the whole Congress back, let’s start abolishing this bloody electoral college and institute a real democracy like the other countries have. The 18th century is over.

    21
  22. I think she is a one-trick pony. She’s good at her subject, but have not heard her talk about much else.
She was drastically wrong about the TPP, which surprised me
    She unnecessarily attacked President Obama.
She said she thought the primary was rigged for Hillary Clinton
If she’s nominated I would vote for her. I don’t think she will be nominated. There are too many other good candidates and I have heard her resonating with black voters. However, I’ll vote for her if she is nominated.

    22
  23. I do believe Her talents would be put to better use replacing Schumer as Senate Majority Leader in 2021

    23
  24. montag# 22

“……. replacing Schumer as Senate Majority Leader in 2021”

I agree to that. But fortunately the d’s have a crop of progressive senators who can seize the leadership.

With Warren, Sherwood Brown, Kamale Harris and others it is time to dispose of thuglicrat shumer who cares more for his hedge fund owners then for his constituents who can’t write a five figure campaign check donation.
Time to get rid of Hoyer on the house side as well.

    24
  25. yet another baby boomer says:

Agree with Micr and AliceBeth, time for a fresh start. The elders need to mentor and guide the upcoming generation. But mostly I’m looking for someone no older than 62 on inauguration day.

Do like EW but as Mary Lynne writes, she only has the one issue although she’s excellent at it. Love the idea of her replacing Schumer!

And yes! please! Buttermilk Sky, let’s work on getting rid of the electoral college. The country needs to move forward.

So, someone young, preferably not a white guy, and with both a domestic and a foreign policy plan. There’s going to be a LOT of cleaning up to be done by the State Department once the odious is gone. I’m open to suggestions. But, of course, come election day 2020 I’ll vote for the Democrat.

    25
  26. Well, K . . . we Irish are thus descended from kings. We kinda specialized in that. Every clan had a leader and guess what? We got into that king thing quite easily.

    26
  27. Nancy Yates says:

At UT Law, many moons ago, I took Bankruptcy law from Prof Warren and did some research for her on the book “As We Forgive Our Debtors.” She was then and I assume now always the smartest person in the room — not necessarily the best leader or speaker or most charasmatic — but always the smartest. Smart would be refreshing in the Presidency.

Whether she wins or not, I am glad she is in the race to keep our ticket more progressive.

    27
  28. The upside to Warren’s genetic disclosure was to expose another trumpian lie, that he would donate a million to a charity of her choice if she proved her native heritage. Not only did he not do so, he denied ever making that promise, though of course it was on the tv machine and all over the ‘net.

    28
  29. K #24: Sherrod Brown. Though Sherwood is kinda cute. Love him and his wife, Connie Schultz. 😉

I have a friend who thought Sherwin Williams Paint was called Sherman Williams. Smart lady, retired ER nurse, with a touch of ADHD. Quite the personality.

I’d love to see Liz Warren or Kamala Harris NOW as Dem Senate Leader as foil to McConnell and Trump. Won’t happen, but nice to dream. They still get plenty of air time.

    29
  30. Hannah #29
    Oops
    Thank you.

  31. Lunargent says:

I like Sherrod Brown a lot. Smart, very relatable as a Regular Guy, strong on labor, and on the right side of most policy issues. And he could never be hit with the Coastal Elite label. A candidate from the Midwest could generate a lot of regional support. And gravitas for days, as opposed to the petulant toddler we’re currently suffering under.

I love Warren, but am not sure that she’d best serve as president. I think Lioness of the Senate is perfect for her, and Majority Leader should be awesome. Or a kickass Treasury Secretary. But I think legislation and oversight is where she can do the most good. And she is a polarizing figure for many. Kamala Harris is another brilliant woman, who would face a lot of animosity as a woman of color. I also think she still has too much of the Prosecutor about her; she rarely projects any warmth.

Our country is so flawed, with persistent, deep-rooted misogyny, racism, and emotional adolescence. I think a 2-woman ticket is a bad idea, no matter who the women would be. And in our current traumatic situation, a lot of people are longing to return to “normal”. Meaning yep: another middle aged white man in charge. But Brown is also an excellent candidate, so I’m not holding it against him.

Beto is a rock star, but still mostly an unknown element. Kennedy probably has a great future, but is too young. Biden missed his moment. The rest all need a lot more vetting.

So yeah – for the moment, I’m with Sherrod Brown.

    31
  32. Pancho Stanza says:

I’ll never understand why Warren keeps taking flack from liberals for testing her DNA. Never.

    32
  33. I have a house plant that would be better than 45
