Okay, okay, there’s a story out there that …
President Joe Biden may nominate a conservative, anti-abortion lawyer for a lifetime judgeship in Kentucky as part of a deal with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), The Louisville Courier-Journal reported Wednesday.
While Kentucky doesn’t currently have a judicial vacancy, the deal would see Chad Meredith, a member of the conservative Federalist Society, nominated when a sitting judge announces they are stepping down or retiring, the paper reported. The Courier-Journal added the deal would see McConnell agree not to hold up any future federal nominations by the Biden White House.
No damn deals with Mitch McConnell. Especially when it involves a lifetime appoint for a very young guy.
First of all, you cannot use the words “McConnell” and “deal” in the same sentence without the devil chuckling.
Second, damn. I mean, there’s not even an opening for a federal judge in Kentucky right now. This is only a promise from Joe to appoint this damn fool to the first open court that comes available, which tells me only one damn thing – this guy has the goods on McConnell and he’s afraid he won’t be able to collect before McConnell kicks the bucket.
No deal, Joe. Two very old men all on their own have no right to decide who will rule long after they are gone. This just stinks.
A deal with the devils (plural) will bite everyone in the arse. A deal to make a Federalist society attorney a lifetime Federal judge is a terrible idea, Joe. They’re the root of everything going on now to take us back to the 1800’s. Just look at the Supremes. It’s bad enough now in Kentucky without making this really bad pact, but Federal judge rulings affect lives beyond state boundaries. Come on Joe, say it ain’t so!!
1In a similar move by Biden that affects almost –everybody–, he’s appointing a known foe of the Social Security/Medi programs to the SS advisory board!

2I’m starting to rethink my campaign donations in light of this kind of crap [I may have to hold my nose when I vote for him though, shouldn’t have to be.]. Last year Biden did fire Trump’s appointed head of SS though, who was a big fox in that chicken house.

I voted for Joe- not my first choice- and he is doing exactly what I was afraid he would do; He seems to think that he can trust a Republican. Where, when and why did he get that this was a good idea? Damn!!!!!
4I realize Biden is getting a bum rap on the economy and many other topics beyond his control but I’ve had reservations about him for years. His support of banks and making Delaware a credit card haven, his support of the 2005 bankruptcy act that makes it more difficult and more expensive to file bankruptcy, his choice of milquetoast Merrick Garland as Attorney General, and his choice of CDC Director Rochelle Walensky who evidently skipped Communication 101 and is botching Covid messaging to this day. This “deal” with McConnell is beyond the pale and the stupidest thing he’s done yet. The Senate has already modified the filibuster concerning SC judges. Modify it some more for federal appointments. When are the Democrats going to dial it up against McConnell?

As a true son of the Commonwealth, a loyal fan of the UK Wildcats, and a believer in BBQing pork, not beef, let me point out that we not only have McConnell, but also Rand Paul (R-Pluto), and Thomas Massie (when you hear the house voted 430 – 5, Massie is one of the 5. Or you ay have seen his Xmas card with his beloved AR15). So one more judge on the wrong side around here hardly matters. If it gets the rest of Biden’s nominees thru, It’s a deal I can live with.

As a fellow son of the Commonwealth (though I bleed UofL Cardinal red, thank you very much), I agree that we can handle one more reactionary federal judge, if it gets the rest of Biden’s picks moving through the Senate. The fact that there is not currently an open judgeship means that McConnell has to start allowing nominations to move through the Senate before he gets the judgeship Biden offered. That doesn’t actually sound like too bad a deal.

The deal is getting slammed ….
The only way I can see this as a win would be to have it go along with
* Republicans withdrawing ALL the blue slips they have on existing vacancies
* McConnell & the Republican leadership agreeing to up and down votes on the floor for EVERY nomination, without delays, and
* Biden & co. having a complete set of nominees for every vacancy, with some in reserve if existing judges agree to take senior status.
In other words, EVERYTHING the Democrats could want and eventually could procedurally win, without the delay and disruption possible from Senate procedure.
otherwise, it seems like a “friendly” agreement with someone known to be diabolical in seeking and taking every possible advantage when it comes to a life-time appointment to the federal judiciary.
9This guy looks a lot younger than those already on the court. Once appointed to this position, what are the odds he will be fast tracked to the Supreme Court when when a vacancy occurs and Republicans control the levers of power?

14Me, I’d gladly take the same “deal” with Mitch, and be sure to flog it when McConnel tries to dither on a more sane appointment elsewhere. Then if/when a position in Kentucky does come open, I’d tell Mitch that I could not appoint someone until the American people have had a chance to vote again and validate the choice. It’d be especially juicy if McConnel had just been re-elected yet again for 6 more years. I’d relish telling him that it’s only fair that we give the voters in Kentucky an opportunity to show their approval … six years from now.
Of course I’d smirk like a mule eating briars while doing so. I’ve never been good at dead pan delivery.
