Thank you, Old Navy!

September 02, 2020 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Old Navy stores are making a significant donation to democracy.

The retailer announced on Tuesday that it will pay store employees for eight hours who serve as poll workers for the 2020 election. The company said employees “will also be eligible for compensation from their local jurisdiction.”

That means they get their salary from Old Navy and the small payment from the county for working the polls.  Holy cow, this is a great idea. Getting young people involved and paying them to do it is a double whammy. It not only helps us when we need it, it kickstarts interest in working again two years from now.

I’m skipping over to Old Navy online and buying a hat or something.

Now here’s the funny part.  There are naysayers.

Oh yeah, those Planned Parenthood people will throw microscopic embryos all over your ballot!  And I am not worried about the NRA, Mr. Woods. They won’t be allowed to bring their guns inside a polling location so they are not going to come help. They are afraid to leave home with an armory to protect them from those radical and violent Old Navy employees.

Thanks to Kary for the heads up.

  1. According to Google The typical Old Navy Sales Associate makes $10 per hour. Sales Associate hourly pay at Old Navy can range from $7 – $16.

Harris County pays $17 an hour for clerks so for a lot of them that will be double their pay!!!

I think there’s a good reason why he’s basically been unemployed. He’s a Clint Eastwood wannabe. They’re both nuts.
It’s laughable about his comments of democrats running elections. Maybe he should check out how voting goes in many red states. Guess who’s running those? Old Navy employees would be a big step up. I’ve always liked Old Navy.

  3. Buttermilk Sky says:

Unlike the NRA and Planned Parenthood, Old Navy has no political agenda I can discern. They just sell clothes, and they want to make it easier for everyone to vote. Why is democracy so terrifying to the right?

    Good for Old Navy!!!!

I’m reminded of a Ded Bob routine where he tells the woman from the audience, “I’ll be on you like Old Navy on White Trash.”

#3 “Why is democracy so terrifying to the right?”
Because it is so antithetical to their desire to control others.

  6. as a NRA member i found no conflict when working at the pols, and, 30 years ago my employer also paid me at the same time…

    6
  7. “PlannedParenthood… imagine the NRA… It’s wrong and a threat to our democracy.”

    Really?
Workers at a health clinic or members of a private organization will threaten democracy if they serve as poll workers?

Let’s imagine if a reality TV host were President. In charge of everything, not just a cog in the wheel at a single polling station within our entire country. Unfortunately we don’t have to imagine, we can see an actual existential threat to democracy. Who let that happen? And allows it to continue unabated?

  8. Anything that helps voting go smoothly this November is bad. At least, according to conservatives.

  9. James Woods is an embarrassing tool with another irrelevant argument. I’ve noticed that almost all of these actors and musicians that become hateful wingnuts later in life are concerned about a single issue. They seldom seem to be interested in social issues. They just don’t want to pay taxes. Selfish much?

    9
  10. Geeze.

Would he be happier if it were Walmart? Or Chick-fil-A?

    Okay, okay: Hobby Lobby…

  11. Bluegirlfromwyo says:

I hate to break James Woods’ victim bubble, but my company has been doing this a lot longer than Old Navy. We get a certain number of paid volunteer hours a year and, yes, you can use them poll working. That hasn’t been what’s breaking democracy.

    11
  12. So: mail in ballots are evil. But so is encouraging people to work the polls so people can vote in person. Can it be that they just really don’t want anyone to vote?
Or do they just not know what poll workers do?

    12
  13. The most important thing about james woods is that he is a nitwit on most things not related to playing make-believe on the screen.

    13
  14. @Buttermilk Sky, One problem is that if you support free and fair elections, you have a political agenda at odds with the Rethuglican Party.

    14
  15. Jane & PKM says:

Of course the conservatives are afraid of vote by mail. It negates all their efforts to close polling sites and discourage people challenged by locating their polling site only to be further challenged by untenable lines. Covidiot 45 was counting on sane Democrats to be further discouraged by his pandemic not wanting to risk their lives those lines.

FWIW Voting in person can be fun, and we understand those who have always done it that way. But the wave of the future is vote by mail. We caucus in NV for the primaries. It’s fun, but it is time consuming which is discouraging for many people, difficult for the elderly and disabled. While provisions were made to correct some of that, especially absentee and military votes, we observed no movement from the at caucus vote to when absentee votes were calculated.

Fact is democracy in the 21st century requires that voting be made equally assessable to everyone. It requires a serious discussion regarding “eligible” voters which conservatives will really hate, and it demands that every ballot be counted.

Given how the Republicons cheat vote by mail has a number of built in protections, especially in states where there is no paper trail when voting in person. Maybe a banner: who do YOU trust? Billy Bob Barr and Donnie or barcodes?

Yeah, yeah, our friends Micr and Sandridge. No. There is not a third option, barmaids. If you see either Messy, Ivodka or similar doxxies at your drop box, trust your instincts, drive on, drop your ballots at legitimate spot.

  16. Uh huh. When corporations are raping the environment, they can do no wrong. But let them step up for democracy and, “It’s the end of the world as we know it!”

Aamof, they may be onto something. It COULD BE the end of the world as we know it. Imagine people participating in democracy. Oh, the horror!

    16
  17. What on earth has happened to James Woods’ brain?

    17
  18. Micr, short answer: conservatism. Which may be complicated by untreated STDs or constant beatings upside his head with ignorant and failed Republicon policies. Covidiots do not comprehend the difference between washing their hands and brains. Guys like Woods and Hegseth that repulsive unwashed covidiot at Fox Not the News eschew simple hand hygiene while driving through the car wash in convertibles with tops down and skulls open to hot wax.

    18
  19. Bluegirlfromwyo, it’s great that your company has been doing this, and it gives me hope that others do or will, too. To me, the important thing about Old Navy announcing this is that it may challenge some other companies to step up to the plate, and that could be a good thing. Now if they’d give paid leave to vote…

Jane&PKM, good thoughts there. I think the scariest thing for me is the trashing of the postal service as a direct hit on voting by mail. I’d love for the postal workers to revolt and do what’s right in spite of (mis)management.

    19
  20. Great news, not only helping to staff the polls today but also to encourage wider political engagement in the future. Even if we win in 2020, we’ll have to stay in the fight for the foreseeable future.

    20
  21. Wow! Now that’s an idea! I did poll work many, many years ago. Twelve hours for $75. I was beat when I came home. God bless anyone who works the polls this time around!

    21
  22. @Jane & PKM

    Well, there is that.

    22
  23. Opinionated Hussy says:

James Woods also thinks any woman over 30 is a used-up old hag….after all “who wants an old dog? Everyone wants a puppy!” (Relying on memory, but that’s almost a direct quote.)

What he thinks in any sphere of discussion is irrelevant.

    23
  24. Bob Boland says:

It’s quite clear, based on “conservative” talking points, that they want to throw out all of those pesky Constitutional Amendments that widened the voting pool and go back to the “good, old days” when only white, property owning males could vote.
No big surprise there, they have always wanted to ignore any Constitutional Amendment that lessened the privileges of white males.
