Fun With Guns: Could Have Seen This Coming Edition
Allie Carter is 25 years old and is an Indiana Conservation Officer, so it was no surprise that she was on a waterfowl hunt last weekend.
It was also not surprising that she has a 12-gage shotgun and a hunting dog.
She laid her shotgun down and her dog stepped on it and shot her.
The dog’s name?
Trigger.
I could not make this up.
I do not know where the good guy with a gun was but that sure ain’t the damn dog.
Thanks to MB for the heads up.
I suspect I’d have shot her as well if she expected me to jump into freezing cold water and retrieve stinky ducks with my mouth.
1Also heard of a guy in a goose blind (a hunting technique that takes real skill) who wondered if his foot had gone numb with cold, so he prodded it with the muzzle of his shotgun. You’ll never guess what happened.
If you’re too clueless to handle a gun safely, somebody gets hurt. If all the rest of us are lucky, the somebody is you.
2Actually a good hunting lab will LOVE to get into cold water and retrieve ducks. The pup was probably was tired of her missing the ducks and figured he’d help her hit something.
Dogs are smart 😉
3And, the winner is Trigger!! with points to e platypus onion!
Ms. Carter, unless you are aiming to kill something, please explain why your safety was in the off position.
Yeppers. Just love all those responsible gun owners.
Rhea, and she was a Conservation Officer. Feel safer now?
4sharon, right you are about Labs. They don’t even require training. One of our best ranchies has three bad habits; he loves to poach ducks, swim where he hasn’t been invited, and con Jane out of extra food.
5Oh, yes. Labs are the undisputed kings of the “I haven’t had a bite in days” look.
6@Annabelle Lee, PKM, Sharon
With all due respect, I got three words for yall “Chesapeake Bay Retriever”. And I’ve had more than one perfect Lab.
7Perhaps Daffy Duck tricked the dog into firing the gun
8I have told you to add Indiana to the silly pile of the mindless.
9Now see, this is where my Guns or Gonads law has a flaw. Gotta rethink that one. Hmmmm…
10Micr, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are great. We love all the working dogs and do what we can to give a forever home to those in need of one, as well as some barn cats. That’s in addition to 3 special needs cats and a dog in the house.
JAKvirginia, if it were only Ms Allie, you could think of her as the exception that proves the rule. But there have been more, shot by good kids rifling their purses, etc. Maybe a Guns or Gene Pool law…..
11JAKvirginia, “gonads” are just names for the hormone-secreting organs. boys have testicles, girls have ovaries. both sets are gonads.
of course my own boy, at age 3, was standing up in the bathtub at his memaw’s house and was poking his bits with his finger. when he asked what that was, he was told it was his testicles (because we believe in naming things correctly). his response? “no, i think it’s brains.”
from the mouths of toddlers…
12OMG falconskat I’m gonna be laughing for days! So glad I didn’t have a mouthful of something!!!
13I agree with the toddler,it is brains in some people.
14@fallconskat
Aligns with my little bride’s position that males have a penis and a brain, but seem to operate only one at a time.
15Good dog, that Trigger.
16Miss(HUH?) Carter is not a conservation officer. Plus- According to WANE, Carter had not completed a hunting safety course before laying down her shotgun without securing it. – See more at: http://www.njnewsday.com/trending/346935-dog-named-trigger-shoots-owner-during-indiana-waterfowl-hunt.html#sthash.C2tuEZTB.dpuf
To add insult to injury she can’t be called Miss anymore.
17Yes, this is entirely possible, even if the dog’s name is itchy-poo. Back in Michigan I heard some stories years ago about dogs that accidentally knocked over shotguns brace against a tree trunk and damn near killed people. I know hunters hate to lay a shotgun down on the ground. They prefer to use the stock as furniture and stand the gun up next to a tree. Never liked shotguns. Anything a dog can shoot is not a good thing. Its bad enough when humans do the shooting.
18Speaking of the Chesapeake Bay (well, retrievers) and hunting, about 15 or 20 years ago, my family visited St. Michaels, which had a nice marine museum. On the grounds was a little house that was a “duck hunting museum”. It was kind of revolting to see old photographs of duck-hunting setups, particularly where the hunter had a bunch of shotguns splayed out to spray fire in a wide arc, with some type of mechanism that enabled all the guns to fire simultaneously. Crazy to this non-hunter!
19Guns don’t kill people, dogs do.
20Maybe her dog doesn’t love her as much as she thinks he does.
21A discussion on the radio this morning mentioned this story and one of the DJs is from Indiana – she said Trigger is a common name for dogs in rural Indiana because is customary to yell “Trigger!” before you shoot.
22she was using a 12 gauge for ducks? I don’t hunt myself, but that just seems like a bit of overkill for water fowl. no wonder the dog shot her, he was embarrassed.
