Today in COVID-19

March 11, 2020 By: El Jefe Category: Coronavirus, Corruption, Trump

Latest I’ve got, but it’s coming hard and fast:

Tom Hanks and his wife test positive for COVID-19

NBA has suspended the NBA season.

Trump bans travel to the US from Europe, except the UK.

Trump’s effort to play down the pandemic has worked…on Republicans.

Brazilian official (accused of corruption, of course) has tested positive for COVID-19 after spending the weekend at Mara Lago.

Trump loyalists test positive for COVID-19, including Matt Gaetz, who stupidly wore a gas mask in Congress last week to mock the threat.  He wins Dumbass of the Week award.

Italy shuts down ALL stores except for pharmacies and grocery stores.

WHO declares the Coronavirus outbreak a global pandemic while calling out “alarming levels of inaction.”

Stocks fall into bear territory for the first time in 11 years in the face of Trump’s incoherent response to COVID-19 and Saudi-Russian oil price war.

Other than that, not a goddam thing happening right now.

Check Your Clock

Okay at 8:08 Texas Time, Trump said there should be an end to partisanship while we were in this crisis.

So the timing starts here.  How long can Trump keep his own call?

I’m betting not long.

By the way, why the UK exception?  There are a dozen counties with fewer cases of the disease  than the UK. However, they are white.

Tax Cut! Tax Cut!

March 11, 2020 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

So Trump is proposing a payroll tax cut that would continue through the rest of year.  Payroll taxes are what fund social security and Medicare.

First of all, do not even think about screwing with my Medicare.

Second, I have to agree with Customer Ralph when he says …

I am so glad that our President proposed a tax cut to combat the Corona Virus. Doctors and some really smart people are saying that viruses are very sensitive to tax policy.

Thanks to Ralph for the heads up.

So Here’s Why People Are Panicking A Little

March 11, 2020 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Okay, first off, Trump ordered federal health officials to go dark and to hold all their meetings as classified.  Reuters says this is “an unusual step that has restricted information and hampered the U.S. government’s response to the contagion, according to four Trump administration officials”

Hell, he already stopped press conferences so only he can speak to the public.  Now he’s cutting us off from the experts who can tell us what they know using information they didn’t genetically inherit from their uncle.

And then to show why we need that information, it was discovered today that Congressvarmint Matt Gaetz and Mark Meadows, the latest in a long line of not-the-best-people Chief of Staff, got tested for the Coronavirus when other people were told the test weren’t available.

The two lawmakers also said they were exhibiting no symptoms of respiratory illness, raising questions of why they were tested at all.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that health-care providers prioritize tests for hospitalized patients who are exhibiting coronavirus symptoms, elderly and medically fragile individuals, along with others who have shown signs of illness after contact with a known or suspected coronavirus patient.

Yeah, and Gaetz was the one making fun of the virus by wearing a gas mask to congress.  Rumor has it that he took the test from his 75 year old grandmother with a hacking cough and a fever.  ‘Cuz he’s just that kind of guy.

Well, Well, Well, That Was Easy

All it takes is for Bloomberg to threaten to spend a billion dollars to investigate the Trump kids, and this happens

Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) cancelled a vote scheduled for Wednesday afternoon on a subpoena stemming from his months-long probe into Hunter Biden and Burisma Holdings.

So Bloomberg has found a niche.  I was kinda hoping he’d buy Fox News and hold Sean Hannity to the no compete contract.

Can the Coronavirus Help Save Democracy?

March 11, 2020 By: El Jefe Category: 2020 Election, Voter Suppression

All the numbers and demographics are moving against Republicans and have for years.  They have clung to power by tilting the field in their favor with gerrymandering and voter suppression using harsh voter ID laws, moving and closing polling locations, shortening early voting periods, making ballots confusing, and sending out deceptive campaign materials that are designed to keep voters off balance.  Recently Trump has taken use of the mass voter rally and raised it to an art form; those rallies are dutifully covered by the media that always amplify it to make it look bigger than it is.  The Republicans have always out maneuvered Democrats on virtually every front, legal and illegal.

So, think about what could be an equalizer that could blunt most of these tactics.  Something that would threaten not just one side, but both sides, something that doesn’t care if you’re a Democrat or Republican, Social Democrat or Trumpist.  Enter the Coronavirus that is rapidly becoming a global pandemic and growing very quickly in the US accelerated by Trump’s incompetent and incoherent early response to the threat.  The resulting condition called COVID-19 is life threatening to some and contagious, passed by human to human exposure.  One of the greatest tools that we have now to fight it is social distancing. Add to that the fact that development of a distributable vaccine will not occur until AFTER the election.  So, as we go deeper into the year, the threat is growing, not getting better.

What does all this mean?  It means that it’s very likely that there will be no in person campaigning, no rallies, no in person voting including early voting.  It means that, in order to have an election, the entire country must use remote voting online or by mail.  By far the safest is online, and the next best is mail in ballot.  Three states vote exclusively by mail, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado.  Republicans HATE remote voting because that vote is much more difficult to suppress, so only states that have balanced or Democratic government control are the ones that have converted to remote voting.  Online makes the most sense and can be secured; today I bank online, shop for groceries online, even buy our tea and coffee online.  I can send money almost anywhere in the world online.  Surely, we can develop a secure way to vote online.  Short of that, though, voting by mail works and is being used today.

So, for the first time, Republicans are facing the exact same obstacle to voting that Democrats are facing.  The Coronavirus can’t tell who you support for President and doesn’t care.  In the face of a national election where their candidate is weak (and nuts), they know that the election is very tight or even a loser for them; that’s why they’ve refused to improve voter security and continued to restrict access to voting.  Suddenly, THEY are facing a voter suppression threat that they didn’t create and can’t control.  Will the Coronavirus threat to Republicans finally be the tipping point where they will be forced to make voting more fair and by mail or online?  I can only hope so, and they better get off their asses and get to work on it.

Short of Trump trying to cancel or delay the election, remote voting is the only answer to make the election happen on time and according to the Constitution.  Could it actually be a global health threat that helps repair a broken system?  The irony would be sweet.
