Fun With Guns: Whoa, Way Too Much Laughing Gas Edition

September 05, 2016 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

So this 72 year old guy in Ohio goes to the dentist and gets gassed-up on Nitrous Oxide.

Then, dammit, his cell phone rings in his pocket. You know, like it always does when you’re high on some damn thing.

Instead, James Short grabbed his pistol, firing it and striking himself in the hand, NBC affiliate WCMH reported. The bullet also grazed Short’s stomach.

Short, who was scheduled on Thursday to receive a filling at New Carlisle Dental Group, northeast of Dayton, had a concealed-carry permit for the gun, according to the station, and the dentist did not ban concealed weapons.

Okay, first of all, if you gotta have a gun at the dentist’s office then just maybe you need to get another dentist.

And then there’s this from the local sheriff’s department —

Sgt. Christina Evans-Fisher of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office offered the incident as a warning: “If you’re going to a doctor’s office where you might be put under some kind of medication that might alter your mental status … you might not want to carry a weapon.”

Please note that the word “might” appears three times in that statement like this is pure conjecture.  Warning, my sweet patootie.  That wasn’t a warning.  That was a laugh your butt off at some crazy old man who can’t tell his damn cell phone from a gun.  Thank goodness he didn’t answer it and blow off his ear.

Thanks to everybody for the heads up.

I think it could have been a lot worse then this: “Thank goodness he didn’t answer it and blow off his ear.” He could have ended his ever needing a dentist again!!

Oh my! Oh my! Oh my!!

  3. I would ask why there are people who think they need a loaded gun with them at all times, but I wouldn’t get an answer at Juanita Jean’s because all y’all are sane. Well, mostly.

Not many dentists put up with patients talking on cell phones with dental drills etc. shoved in their mouths.

This dentist and his/her assistant need a safer line of work-like mine sweeping.

  5. Carrying a firearm everywhere one goes is either a sign that one is paranoid, or needs to move.

    5
  6. Ohio? Well, I knew that Pennsylvania has open carry laws but as a friend said “but folks there are more sane than people in Texas.” This story sure sounds like Texas to me.

    6
  7. Well, I wonder if that dentist will change his mind about open carry. After all, it could have been a piece of him blown off. Also wonder if the patient got his dental work finished or had to find another dentist.

    7
  8. I gotta tell a true dentist story and then go vacuum the carpet. I used to live in Ottawa, Ontario and worked for a dentist. One day a man came in and sat down. The dentist started giving him The Shot. Suddenly the man turned grey, his throat rattling, eyes rolling up etc. The dentist was telling me to call an ambulance. We thought the man was dead. Then the man’s eyes opened, his color went back to normal. He saw the terror in our faces. He laughed and said, “Oh, I’m allergic to anesthetics. Didn’t I tell you?” And he didn’t even have a gun.

  9. Why doesn’t the following apply?

    Texas Penal code:

16-11-134. Discharging firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs

    (a) It shall be unlawful for any person to discharge a firearm while:

    (1) Under the influence of alcohol or any drug or any combination of alcohol and any drug to the extent that it is unsafe for the person to discharge such firearm except in the defense of life, health, and property; failure to do so is a felony and minimum punishment is 1 year in prison and a $75,000 fine.

  10. At 72 years, he wouldn’t have qualified for a Darwin Award if he’d shot his fool head off, more’s the pity.

    10
  11. I dunno, but if I were a dentist I think I would seriously consider a No Gun policy.

    11
  12. I own two handguns and a deer rifle gathering dust I don’t even have ammo for the things. Not for nothing but Dentist’s are sadistic and evil their entire job requires them to inflict severe pain on their customers I know from personal experiance but I digress. It’s a good thing I didn’t have a concealed gun permit and some ammo when I was getting my dentures because I didn’t care for the sadistic “doctor”.

    12
  13. I guess what I’m trying to say is Dentist’s being evil and sadistic should insist on a gun free office for their own safety. LOL

  14. WA Skeptic says:

At the very least that old fart needs to have his concealed carry license revoked and the pistol confiscated.

    Some people…

    14
  15. Sounds like this guy has a serious need for a court evaluation of his compos mentis, cause he’s obviously non compos gunnos.

One fool carrying a gun in his pocket, but so many fools before this one and so many to follow? Holsters must be a part of the Commie gun safety for them to hate holsters this much.

“16-11-134. Discharging firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs” is not Texas penal code language.

Texas so far as I am aware doesn’t differentiate between sober discharging your firearm and not soberly discharging your fire arm.

    If one “intentionally or knowingly” “(7) discharges a firearm in a public place other than a public road or a sport shooting range, as defined by Section 250.001, Local Government Code;
    (8) displays a firearm or other deadly weapon in a public place in a manner calculated to alarm;
    (9) discharges a firearm on or across a public road;”
one has a committed the offense of Chapter 42 Disorderly Conduct. 7 and 8 are mid-level misdemeanors and 9 is a low level misdemeanor.

Interesting. But, I believe the answer @buskyandme was actually looking for might be, the Texas Penal Code doesn’t apply here because this incident appears to have happened in *Ohio*, where, fortunately for the locals, Texas laws generally don’t apply. That said, I’m not sure how the Ohio Penal Code might weigh in on this…

Perception, not possession is 9 tenths of the law.

  20. The laughing gas disengaged the safety?

    20
  21. Un=beee=leev=able! Hell, the churches where I live do not even allow the congregants to carry cell phones into the service. Also, the doctors and dentists feel the same way about cell phones and all other extraneous “carried” stuff and damn near frisk their patients who think their 2nd A. is being insulted. Now, lets discuss opticians. My son was a licensed board certified optician in this metro area. His FBI and other policey type patients DID come in packing but they were always holstered, visible, and did announce they were carrying as part of their job. And as everyone knows, opticians do not knock you out with laughing gas or anything else. And if you do find one that does, let us know cuz this we gotta see!

  22. People who think they have to bring their handgun with them everywhere they go, undoubtedly have an IQ lower than the weapon’s caliber.

    22
  23. I’ve read, several times, that piece of the Texas penal code that buskyandme quoted at #9. Have I got this straight? It seems to say that it’s illegal to fire a gun while drunk or drugged “except in the defense of life, health, and property; failure to do so is a felony and minimum punishment is 1 year in prison and a $75,000 fine.”

FAILURE to fire a gun while drunk or drugged is a felony? I can’t read that any other way. If it’s quoted in its entirety, I understand a lot more about Texas now, and I just tripled down on my assertion that I’m never going there.

  25. Well Wally I’ve been to the dentist 5 times this last month, and if you are feeling intense pain then you are fibbing or need a new dentist!!!
As my wife states..we need to carry guns?!?!?! Then we will move to another location!!!
