Welcome to The World's Most Dangerous Beauty Salon, Inc.
My name is Susan DuQuesnay Bankston. I live in Richmond, Texas, in the heart of Tom DeLay's old district. It's nuttier than squirrel poop here.
I am honored and privileged to know Miss Juanita Jean Herownself, hairdresser extraordinary and political maven. Since she does not have time to fiddle with this internet stuff, I type her website for her and you can read it if you want to. If you don't, she truly does not give a big bear's butt.
A lot of what I post here has to do with local politics, but you probably have the same folks in your local government.
This ain't a blog. Blogs are way too trendy for me. This is a professional political organization.
“To the police officers… who… uphold their oath.”
No problem there.
1It’s the Republicans who protect the officers who don’t uphold their oath, and serve a president who doesn’t uphold his oath of office.
The GOppers’ act is really getting old. They have seen the latest polls and are panicking.
2What Rick said.
3As we saw in Buffalo and elsewhere, the blue shirts are assaulting old white people now. This will not work for them the way it did in the Nixon days.
4We need to ditch that “Defund The Police” description, immediately. We’re just handing the Republicans a weapon to attack us with, where they use the “defund” term as meaning “get rid of police protection for the community.” We need to start talking about “Re-structure The Police” or “De-militarize The Police” instead—and we need to do it damned quickly.
5Well Kevin and lots of police did have one thing in common…
6Not upholding their oath
Let’s properly fund the police, to the extent that they have the shot trained out of them, with re-inforcement through continued training. That would work but he expensive. Good things cost.
7Steve@5–you’re so right. Democrats need to own the message and stop letting Republican sound bites be the message. This is the same as the message type about open borders.
8Steve #5 – I’m with you. And we also need to get Union clauses out that create special laws for the PD. When a Houston officer is accused of a crime, he has 48 hours per the contract before he is questioned – you or I would be taken in immediately.
9Democrats released details of the Justice in Policing Act. “Qualified immunity” as many here have suggested would be reformed. “Pattern and Practice” could trigger DOJ investigations. It would also create a National Police Misconduct Registry. With veterans preference points given in many state and local jobs, I would like to see deeper ‘inspection’ of all less than honorable discharges before hiring, too. It’s a start. https://www.stltoday.com/news/national/democrats-unveil-sweeping-police-reform-bill-george-floyds-casket-arrives-at-houston-church/article_f25634af-3ccb-531b-bc02-9df90365951e.html
It’s so frustrating. So many solutions that could begin today. But no. There’s a ***king moron* where a leader should be.
10SteveTheReturned @5, Eggzactly. The “messaging and framing” of political issues is the whole thing, and Democrats usually suck at it , while the Rethugs are masters of deception and extremely effective propaganda.
.
One very effective tactic to bring the police forces back under control [where needed ] would be to seriously squeeze them economically. Most cops are used to a lot of overtime gravy and many perk$ like certain discretionary expense money [and are often used to living way beyond their base salaries with all that juicy gravy ].
Do y’all have any idea how lucrative some police retirement plans are, often with as few as twenty years service?
City managers and councilmembers could easily tighten up tasty extra goodie stuff like that , without running afoul of union contract rules , etc [time for some real changes there ].
11It’s our effing money after all, and a lot of them have been abusing the system and some citizens. Another huge financial aspect are potentially very expensive lawsuit judgments against the taxpayers due to these flagrant abuses.
Start squeezing the shit outta the bad mofos.
Steve the Returned@5: On the money.
12It’s the easiest weapon we could give them right now. Violence in the streets, constantly. Rioters running rampant, constantly. These protesters are killing our beloved country on a daily basis. As I understand it, its right there on Facebook for the world to see.
See what I did there?
And who will be blamed for this massively exaggerated violence? The folks actually protesting peacefully.
Sandridge@11:
13I agree about the monetary punishments. But let’s look at it from a different angle. I don’t know how Canadians pay their police. But they pay their teachers pretty damn well because they value children’s education enough to attract the people who want to DO THE JOB, educate their children, not just punch the clock for decent benefits. If a new system is set up paying cops well for the right reasons, while punishing abusers….?
And I know this is a stretch, but I think it has bearing.
14In Blackwater by Jeremy Scahil, he asserts that one of the first things done wrong by the Bush administration was to fire everyone associated with the Hussein administration. Lawyers, doctors, and military. All the military. Unlike in Germany, where the SS was disbanded, but the rest of the military stayed…….employed. Getting a paycheck.
In Iraq, the entire apparatus of military had to find a new way to feed their families. And in stepped ISIS. Guess where a lot of them went?
Now this may seem fantastically paranoid.
But unemployment is at Great Depression levels. And the pandemic is about to get a lot worse.
Aggrieved former police officers, ESPECIALLY ONE’S WHO ARE LEGITIMATELY GOOD PUBLIC SERVANTS caught up in the moment are a bad thing. Right wing organizations will be waiting with open arms.
But that’s just my opinion and I’m just as full of shit as anybody else.
I understood that resetting police practices wasn’t “defunding”; just the direction it went. My idea is to go back to the definition of “Peace Officers”. And THEN I realized the Colt revolver was called “The Peacemaker”. THAT’S where our system veered off course, embracing the notion that killing people was “peace” oriented. I agree that calling for “defund the police” would become a rallying cry for republicans who don’t bother to unpick what is being called for. Typical – no fresh ideas – just take one someone already had, twist it, turn it, shred it and calling the newly formed “slogan” their own.
15I love what they are doing in DC in regards to that large playpen Trump has erected around the White House. The jokes about it were fun enough, but in DC style, it is being used as a canvas and people are “decorating” it with their posters, etc., in a creative way.

Ontario Provincial Police Salaries
Slightly out of date but indicative.
/ OPP Pay
General OPP information
I believe that most successful recruits will greatly exceed the minimum education requirements.
17jrkrideau – just out of curiosity, are those numbers in Canadian dollars? And what’s the exchange rate, if so? Trying to compare them to the pay scale from where I used to live. This was Northern Virginia where rookie police officers started at ~$42K.
18Bob, Maggie in Northern VA here. Starting salary for FFx County cops is $60K the last time I looked. It may be even more now inasmuch as the county guvmint really wants their officers to live where they work and it is damn expensive around here, even now in the middle of a financial blowup and the pandemic I have had very good experience with the local county Mountie’s. The county has a special squad that handles mental health cases without the use of force or weapons. And they are easy and good to talk to having had special training in just nice common human touch stuff.
