We’re 47th! Go, Texas!

June 06, 2018 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Texas, whose motto is: Thank God for Mississippi!, came in 47th in a ranking of safest places to live.

The WalletHub study compared various safety indicators across all 50 states, examining data on assaults, mass shootings, thefts, murders, traffic fatalities, workplace injuries, climate disasters and more. Texas came in 47th, just above Oklahoma, Louisiana and Mississippi.

And that didn’t even count the fact that Texas has 157 kinds of snakes and 151 of them can kill you.  It also did not include “Hold my beer and watch this” moments, but I think we’d have taken first place in that.

However, we did take First Place in the number of uninsured citizens.  Thanks, Greg Abbott!

  1. I see that I’m left off that list, as usual. It’s like I don’t exist and neither does the Nation’s Capitol.

    OTOH, we still have lots of guns so it’s not an entirely bleak picture.

    We can say the same things here in Louisiana. WOOT!

  4. We’re #16! We’re #16! Go, Maryland!

    We’re #7 here in RI.

    Huh.

    Chicken or the egg. Do people in Red States rank less/least safe because they have, or want, more guns/”freedom from nanny-state”, or is there something… else that makes them less safe?

    Why is higher taxes related to being safer?

    6
  7. Virginia is 19th! That might rise a few notches the next time around inasmuch as the Virginia legislature finally voted to let the inhabitants have Medicaid!

    I live in Virginia (#19), hail from Pennsylvania (#28), call Delaware home (#15) and have also lived in Texas (#47) and California (#32).

    When I retire, I’m headed back to Delaware.

    @BarbinDC, a BIG YES!!!

    The only red state in the top 10 is Utah @ #4. The lowest ranked blue state is Illinois, @ #35.

    This will be ugly:

    Using *this* article, and an article “Which States Rely the Most on Federal Aid?”, is there any correlation to those states MOST dependent on Federal money, being relatively unsafe and being a Red State?

    Comparison *Least* Safest States(2018) to
    highest Federal Aid Reliance(2014).

    And if Red or Blue State(2016)?

    Safest Sate # == S# ^

    Federal Aid Reliance 2014 == FA2014 ^^

    Red/Blue (or Purple) ^^^

    S# Name FA2014 R/B

    50 Mississippi 01 R

    49 Louisiana 02 R

    48 Oklahoma 18 R

    47 Texas 28 R

    46 Florida 22 p

    45 Arkansas 21 R

    44 Alabama 14 R

    43 Missouri 06 R

    42 Alaska 40 R

    41 S. Carolina 31 R

    40 Montana 04 R

    39 Tennessee 03 R

    38 S. Dakota 07 R

    37 Georgia 08 R

    36 Kansas 45 R

    The *least* safe are (almost exclusively) Red, and most are heavily reliant on Federal Aid. Maybe that’s why they are insecure, they can’t pay their bills, the states can’t cover their expenses out of their own pockets, and they have Republicans convincing them they need to be armed and afraid…

    Looking at this, I can’t help but wonder if Lincoln did the right thing. Maybe he should have just let the Confederacy go.

    Though I love all you southern members, JJ most of all. But I’m sure that the truncated USA would have a pretty liberal immigration policy. We could make room for you.

    Too damned much of this country is hot, flat, humid, and conservative; four of my least favorite things.

  13. Welcome to Texas.

    Miz JJ reminds me of the quote I read some place or another from the pioneer woman who wrote in woe to her own mother back in civilization from a dugout hut somewhere on the south Texas frontier, “Every single thing in Texas bites, sticks, or stings.”

    Texas only gets worse when you add those aforementioned “here, hold my beer. You ain’t gonna believe this sh!t.” human moments.

    By the time I clicked on the link, the site had shut down due to “too many requests”. If only we could shut down the Dump practice of taking children from their parents at our southern border as easily.

  15. Maymoon, the New England States are all in the top nine. I wonder if Canada would have us?

    Storrs, CT was Slate’s #1 safest location a few years ago. Then an F1 tornado knocked some shingles of a barn and it got demoted.

    15
  16. Minnesota is #3. Gawd I love this state!
