Ted Cruz still has duel citizenship. Someone is wondering why.
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz vowed months ago to renounce his Canadian citizenship by the end of 2013, but the Calgary-born Republican is still a dual citizen.
Cruz, 43, recently said in an interview with the Dallas Morning News that lawyers are preparing the paperwork to renounce citizenship, just as he said in August.
Richard Kurland, a Vancouver-based immigration attorney, wonders what’s taking so long. Kurland said Friday that unless there’s a security or mental health issue that hasn’t been disclosed, renouncing citizenship is a simple, quick process.

Without a doubt he is green ham Gohmert crazy, while he and Dubya with their Dominion fantasies pose serious Constitutional and security threats. 1I recall reading that when only one parent is a US citizen, there are some additional issues regarding how long/how much that single US citizen had been away from the US at the time of birth. It would be hilarious if he turns out to not actually be a US citizen, but instead a long term “illegal alien” (dear Lord I hate that term) brought here by his parents as a child.
Or maybe he’s having trouble finding a Canadian lawyer educated at one of the major ivories.

Sounds like the Canadians can’t wait to be rid of him. I guess there’s no chance we can send Cruz back. I always hoped we could work a trade where Canada gets Teddy Boy, and in return we get back his weight in maple syrup.

Carnival Cruz is a Canadian citizen by birth and owes loyalty to Her Majesty the Queen. He puts forth a claim of US citizenship thru his mothers birth in the United States even though she had of her own free will abandoned the US to live in with a Cuban Citizen abroad.
Is he also a citizen of Cuba under the same doctrine?
Why hasn’t he taken steps to sever his ties with the communist?

16I also could not understand what was taking Cruz-er so damn long to get something so simple done and over with. Ten to one the Canadians are finally and deeply looking into Papa Cruz’s Fidel Castro background for one thing and the fact that he was in the U.S. for about 5 years before he was posted to Canada by his employer. It only took my dad not quite 5 years to become a full citizen. Papa Cruz was on the run from Cuba when he landed here and he may have even been given some sort of special treatment by U.S. Immigration, probably given refugee/political asylum status. Too much of Papa Cruz’s background is still a blank. Hey, interested citizens want to know!
17The Canadians might want to work up a trade whereby they keep Cruz if we take Rob Ford, the mayor of Toronto who admitted to smoking crack “probably during one of my drunken stupors.” At least Ford has an excuse.

I’m too lazy this freezing morning to try to find the quote; but, in essence, the Canadian government won’t just accept somebody saying they renounce his Canadian citizenship. You have to PROVE that you are a true citizen of someplace else. This is to avoid inadvertently causing somebody to be stateless. Cruz has to find documents showing that his mother was a US citizen at the time of his birth in Canada. Not so easy a job, since he will have to prove that she lived in the US during a specified time.
I would try to make this funnier, for Miss Jean’s sake if nothing else, but it is too darn cold today!

22BarbinDC, you are spot on! Locating documents from long ago is a mess. When my dad died, we found his citizenship papers which contained a photo of him, all young and very proud, but for a man who made it a totally serious habit of saving important papers, we could not find his birth certificate anywhere. What we did find was his high school graduation certificate. We know that when he crossed the border he had to have birth documentation. If all he really ever did have was the high school paper, it must have been a very easy border official who let him in.
23I’ve seen the theory advanced that the Cruzer is being less than diligent in the revocation process just in case he might need healthcare and doesn’t quite trust the plan that comes with his senatorial status.
24Maggie- I remember crossing the Canadian border both ways with little more than a cursory check for items deemed not proper for the crossing, it was a short list and not very stringently enforced..

31OK. The actual strength and flavor of each maple syrup is not changing. They will now all be within a category of Grade A. Is this kind of like saying everybody is special?
