Weather Update

August 25, 2017 By: Juanita Jean Herownself Category: Uncategorized

Okay, it’s about 9:00 am on Monday Friday.  We are fully prepared and staying put.  We were in Victoria yesterday and many of our friends were under mandatory evacuation.

As El Jefe told you, what were are expecting in the Houston area is rain and bucket loads of it.  The good news is that the Brazos River is low now and can handle a lot of rain.  The bad news is that rivers have limits.

If you want to follow the weather news in the Houston area, I agree with El Jefe on Space City Weather.

I live in Richmond, which is 35 miles southwest of Houston, between Rosenberg and Sugar Land.  We live in a two story home and have access to the roof.

It appears that the worse will be flooding, with rain starting Sunday for us.

I’ll update here when I can!  Thanks for your good thoughts.  We’ll be fine.

  1. Just a little stress going on there Juanita. This is Friday — Not Monday. Get you a bloody mary and ride this one out. Best of luck to all of you on the coast.

  2. ummmm – Friday

I do believe they’ve already exhausted their rum rations for the duration.

  4. Ok, so yes it is Friday… we all make mistakes. Take care of yourself and although I don’t drink anymore, I’d suggest lots of beer as a better alternative to rum or vodka! YMMV and yes I know one never buys beer, just rents it for awhile.

It really is too early in the morning for me to think of anythig humorous but I got an email telling me to comment dammit. SO like I said, take care and I’ll be thinking about you!

Oh yes, remember damn yankee is two words.

  5. WA Skeptic says:

Keep a axe in the attic! Or maybe install a hatch in the roof next year!

Never a dull moment in your neck of the woods, is there??!

  6. Make a pitcher of your favorite libation, tea, lemonade or some bloody mary will do. Don’t forget the snacks too. Be safe.

  7. Stay safe everyone.

If you want to see some really cool graphics of the storm, use the below website. Click on “Earth” at the lower left to set the options. I have this one set to surface wind speeds.

The Community Collaborative on Rain Hail And Snow (COCORAHS) collects information from volunteers throughout North America. In Texas, we’re lucky enough to have many of them (including yours truly). Reports are to be done daily, but there are also severe weather reporting options:

Keep in mind that if you’re near a river/bayou, check rainfall UPSTREAM as well.

Hunker down and stay safe JJ! I’ll be thinking of you over the next few days and praying for the safety of all in Harvey’s path. I didn’t realize that there had not been a major hurricane in your area since 2005 – time really flies faster as I get more mature. Take care everyone!

  10. My son, his wife and my granddaughter are in San Antonio to get her installed in her college dorm, so I am praying for everybody down there, but especially San Antonio. They, along with so many others will experience torrential rains and flooding.
May the winds die soon and the rain let up before expected and may everyone stay safe and sound.

  11. With apologies to Patton
“Oh mighty and most merciful father. We humbly beseech thee of thy great goodness to restrain this immoderate weather with which we have had to contend. Grant us fair weather …”

    11
  12. Folks, I had kin and friends hit by Katrina. One friend related how it is a very good idea to have a helluva good shotgun and plenty of shot on hand as you head up to the attic. That shotgun can put just the right size hole in the roof so you can crawl out as the water starts to tickle the attic. God bless you all and keep you safe!

  13. Don A in Pennsyltucky says:

Last night the Weather Underground cretins — you know the ones that like to hang out along the coast to show us the waves and winds from hurricanes — said that they were going to head up to Victoria to ride out the storm. Given their fondness for bad weather, I’d say anywhere withing 50 miles of Victoria is not safe for normal humans.

    13
  14. I have 2 honorary nieces, one with a family, in Houston. Given their location and preparations, they should be fine. I have my fingers, eyes, legs, arms and toes all crossed for the safety of everyone in Harvey’s path.

    14
  15. I just looked at the forecast from the Houston National Weather Service (NWS) office, and it predicts about 20″ of rain in our area (southeast side of town) over the next four days. Trouble is, this thing is going to hang around a bit longer than that.

The NWS also issues forecasts for rivers and streams. The forecast for the Brazos River calls for major flooding at Richmond and Rosharon by Monday, at which time it should start going back down.

I volunteer at Brazos Bend State Park, and the last two times the Brazos flooded like that, the park got flooded and closed down for more than a month. I haven’t heard yet, but I presume park officials are keeping an eye on that.
