Trump Just LOVES Sculpture…Now
I won’t nauseate you be repeating all of the nonsense spewing forth from Donald Trump’s mouth and fingers these last few days except for the tweet about Confederate monuments:
Today, he’s really, really concerned about the removal of “beautiful statues…”. Never mind that these “beautiful statues” are of racists, oppressors and treasonous turncoats. Not only is his criticism historically and factually misdirected, he is ignoring his own malfeasance when it comes to preserving sculptures. Back in 1980, Trump was getting ready to build the building that put his name on the map, none other than Cheeto Tower on Fifth Avenue. The building was to be built on the site where the Bonwit Teller building stood. The building had beautiful art deco friezes, which Trump publicly promised to preserve and donate to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I know you’ll be shocked by this, but he lied. When he found out that preserving the sculptures would delay construction of his monument to himself by two weeks, he ordered the sculptures jack hammered into a million pieces. Nice. Here’s what they looked like before Trump struck:
Here’s the detail:
Yep, these are gone, replace by this:
So, Trump’s crocodile tears over taking down Jim Crow era statues of bigots and oppressors are a little lost on me.
As if you needed another reason to be appalled, I’m happy to help.
More reasons please.
Only because there never could ever be enough reasons to rid ourselves of this despot.
1Tasteless Liar in Chief is Donnie. Know what other monuments he doesn’t care about preserving? Those belonging to you and me: our National Parks & Monuments. Jackass.
2My bet is, if saving those friezes made money for him, he’d a done it.
Since they didn’t, they were “losers.”
3I seem to remember that tRump had the opportunity to utilize the cheap services of some Polish workers who were in the country illegally and had just finished demolishing another building for a pal of tRump’s.
4Trump loves one thing, Trump.
5Yet another set of lies and hypocrisy from Donnei, the Crocodile Tear Caligula.
The Orange Anus has always been like this, stuck in his undoubtedly mega-snotty ‘terrible twos’ unto the present day. Needs to be restrained by any means possible, lest his little hands and feet knock over something really valuable, like a nuke or two.
Even Sen. Corker (Reptile-TN) has stated “The President has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability nor some of the competence that he needs to be successful”
Many of us knew and smelled the Diaper Don stench from before Rump waltzed down the golden tower stairs.
The issue is how to GOTV enough lazy-ass Democrats and swing a number of Independents (and maybe a few who voted R) in 2018 to overturn the Congress and some state and local govs.
Be nice to find a way to rub the Rumpers noses in the stinking mess too, without alienating too many and getting the usual “doubledown” reaction.
The NYT’s morning headline email has a link to another good Krugman op-ed:
Trump Makes Caligula Look Pretty Good
Paul Krugman AUG. 18, 2017
“Even before the media obsession with Hillary Clinton’s email server put The Worst President Ever™ in the White House, historians were comparing Donald Trump to Caligula, the cruel, depraved Roman emperor who delighted in humiliating others, especially members of the empire’s elite. But seven months into the Trump administration, we can see that this comparison was unfair.
For one thing, Caligula did not, as far as we know, foment ethnic violence within the empire. For another, again as far as we know, Rome’s government continued to function reasonably well despite his antics: Provincial governors continued to maintain order, the army continued to defend the borders, there were no economic crises.
Finally, when his behavior became truly intolerable, Rome’s elite did what the party now controlling Congress seems unable even to contemplate: It found a way to get rid of him.
Anyone with eyes — eyes not glued to Fox News, anyway — has long realized that Trump is utterly incapable, morally and intellectually, of filling the office he holds. But in the past few days things seem to have reached a critical mass.”…
Let’s hope the political ‘core’ reaches a “critical mass” before some W88 U and Pu pit cores do.
6Of course he did just that. He will probably in his own way tell you that he is no worse and no different from other robber barons. He’s likely to be correct on that considering what J.P. Morgan, Frick, Vanderbilt, Carnegie et al. did wrong despite the fact that one of them gave a lot of money for libraries. There comes a time when even a Mt. Everest size pile of cash isn’t a big enough cover up.
7Confederate culture? Ever hear of an oxymoron? well, in this case, I guess it’s a multiple moron!
So now he’s the biggest art critic??!
8You know, I’ve thought of a way to make him change his focus, but I cannot stomach the thought…
He would gladly herald getting these statues out if people suggested replacing them with something more modern–him.
9But dies it really count since he stiffed the Polish workers that did the hit job for him?

Here’s my idea:
Remove monuments to the Confederacy and statues of Confederates from public property.
Require Donald Trump to place these reminders of treason prominently in front of all Trump Properties, if he likes them so much.
I saw a clip of a TV interview about the frieze removal back when it happened. Trump was assuring the interviewer that it wasn’t that big a deal, because they weren’t all that valuable; “we had them appraised”.
Because he has one standard for the value of anything: financial. Historical, cultural, aesthetic values – they mean nothing to him. And his word to MOMA, like his word to anyone else, was worth less than nothing.
I wished so hard that I could have reached back through time and the TV screen, and slapped the smirk off his smug, arrogant face. This is who he’s always been.
12Shkreli is just one smirking aspect of Cheeto Jesus…
13NYC remembers, and we have never forgiven him.
