This Is Making Me CRAZY!
Okay, okay, best we can figure about 35,000 people die from the flu every year, and we have to beg people to get the flu shot. One person has died of Ebola and we’re closing down schools.
I don’t understand this.
It’s making me crazy.
Okay, can I quarantine people who don’t get the flu shot because they are far more likely to kill me than Ebola is?
A friend told me that at her child’s school, they are requiring the kids wash their hands twice a day because of Ebola. Wait a damn minute. They weren’t washing their hands before? What? They don’t go to the bathroom all day?
And now we have an Ebola Czar?
Look, you make budget cuts, you suffer the consequences. The NRA won’t approve our nominee for Surgeon General until he says that bullets are good for you. Republicans cannot run around acting surprised when the system fails.
The Texas Department of State Health Services is the state agency that licenses and regulates health facilities in Texas. It was the state’s job to insure that the hospital was ready for catastrophic events. Why the hell do you think Rick Perry is staying in Europe?
It’s making me crazy.
I’m not going to listen to the news all weekend so if something other than Ebola idiocy happens, y’all let me know.
Maybe Rick accidentally picked up ebola on the plane and gets better care in Europe? hehehe.
1re: waShing hands, kids have two modes: fingertips and surgical scrubs. going to MaUdie’s for brunch. You bored, come on over.
2Maudie’s on Slaughter Lane. Maybe they’ll change the name of Slaughter Lane to Ebola Lane.
3Like my husband says…. er. CraziER. And I’m with you – craziER by the day thanks to FOX & Fools scaring the heck out of their paranoid audience who then spill out into the real world.
4I think the media has ebola fever. I have never seen such coverage of two people in the hospital. But the flu, gunshot wounds, heart attacks….barely a whisper.
We aren’t getting out of here alive no matter how afraid you are.
5Easy to see why!! People in general are insane!!
6Plane crash!! DON’T FLY!!!
Car crash! When we getting a new car for the trip tomorrow?
People always fear MORE that which they cannot control, and have no fear for what they THINK THEY CAN CONTROL, but really can’t and don’t think about too much.
I am applying the Ronald Reagan @ AIDS model to ebola. I am not even saying the word until 37,061 AIDS cases have been reported and 16,301 people have died in the USA.
Bitter? You bet. We gay people have had our plague. Lots of luck y’all.
I will never forget, and I will never forgive.
7The ISDs are in PANIC mode.
8One of my sons, who teaches in a suburban Dallas district, mentioned last evening how a nearby district had shut down a couple schools and were deep cleaning them this weekend. His district hasn’t yet twisted off but the day is young. Plus a third district reacted some kind of way, no details known to me, seemingly because a couple students in a school knew Duncan’s gf and kids. Jeez Louise can we just jerk knees a bit less?????
@Marge Wood:
9If pRick contracts Ebola, we will refer to his condition as tEabola.
OF COURSE this gets more fear than the flu. Guys, ebola comes out of Africa, where all those black people are.
10It still surprises me, though I don’t know why, that the super-macho, manly-manly, only-the-strong-should-survive right wingers are also the world’s worst cowards. They panic at the drop of a virus (while ignoring real problems).
And FOX is their panic cheerleader: Give me a P (for phobia, applied to anyone who isn’t a rich white man), give me an A (for anarchy instead of governing), give me an N (for Nowledge, which is much superior to Knowledge), give me an I (for Insanity), give me a C (a gentleman’s F since gentlemen should never be graded harshly).
Give me a break.
11I just had a thought that seems to be in the true spirit of the radical right. Let’s just call in the NRA to shoot all those pesky viruses.
12Kary, the irony and the inhumanity of the Reagan years won’t leave us, until Saint Ronnie is better known as Iran-Contra Ron or Ollie’s Bitch.
Oh yeah, that “gay” disease. Let’s scare those good old white boys with a few facts. Last I heard, old white boys retired to Floriduh had surpassed IV drug users as largest demographic of new HIV infections with their female partners being the next largest group.
Still too much st00pid taking place, when AIDs Awareness, sex education, and simple common sense are replaced with unrealistic “Christian” based fallacy ‘education.’
Would it help if we did a Santorum on O’Reilly and the rest of Fox Not the News clowns on Twitter? #Billo candidate for HIV.
13When I get so totally fed up with all of the “… the sky is falling, the sky is falling” crap, I shut the TV off and get on the computer or read … I am currently trying to get through “Gone Girl” … the book is so goofy, I doubt I’ll see the movie.
14And, of course, the Repukes are trying to turn the tide in their favor at election time by saying Obama has fallen so short of doing anything about everything!! All their hands and arms are flapping in the wind .. the sky is falling, the sky is falling!!
It’s spreading:
A cruise ship has been refused entry into a Belizean port because there was a Texas healthcare worker aboardwho had apparently handled lab samples of a recent case (Carnival line, M/V Magic). No one was allowed to disembark.
This is getting insane. I rarely watch local news, just happened to channel flip through the locals today: wall-to-wall EBOLAyerallgonnadie!!!.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/10/17/1337187/-BREAKING-Cruise-ship-carrying-Texas-Ebola-health-worker-refused-entry-in-Belize
Per WaPo:
15“The Government of Belize was contacted today by officers of the U.S. Government and made aware of a cruise ship passenger considered of very low risk for Ebola. The passenger had voluntarily entered quarantine on board the ship and remains free of any fever or other symptoms of illness. The Ebola virus may only be spread by patients who are experiencing fever and symptoms of illness and so the US Government had emphasized the very low risk category in this case. Nonetheless, out of an abundance of caution, the Government of Belize decided not to facilitate a U.S. request for assistance in evacuating the passenger through the Phillip Goldson International Airport.
The GOB reassures the public that the passenger never set foot in Belize and while we remain in close contact with US officials we have maintained the position that when even the smallest doubt remains, we will ensure the health and safety of the Belizean people. The Prime Minister has called a press conference tomorrow morning to further address any concerns that may arise from this event.”
I’m so scared about dying of Ebola that I’m going to text about it while I drive!
16Ooooooo, corn shucks! So the buck stops at Perry’s desk? Well, well! As for the mania for washing hands, too much is way the hell too much. You can surgically scrub your hands until the skin cracks and then the ebola walks in. As for the schools shutting down to do sterile procedure clean up, as a former teacher, I say a big HOORAY! My worst illnesses occurred when I taught school and I caught them all from the kids! Good to hear that at least a few airplanes are also being sterile procedures cuz I always found them to be strangely dirty. Think pillow and blankets used by all the passengers and then ask, hey, do you guys ever wash these things? They are usually simply stowed away after use. I could be that ebola will scare some individuals and organizations into taking a damn bath!
17FDR’s First Inaugural Address:
“So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”
18In Africa, some are convinced that ebola is a tool of the white people being used to kill black people.
In America, some are convinced of the opposite.
In America, they are also firmly convinced that Obama was incompetent for letting it come here, and also complicit in bringing it here. So he is simultaneously an evil genius and incompetent idiot.
Of course, self-infected ISIS members are gathering at the southern border (but not, apparently, the northern one) to swarm across and detonate themselves in crowded areas so as to fling Ebola-flavored gobbets of flesh into the unguarded orifices of real Murricans.
So Obama is also incompetent for not closing the border against yet another of his own secret plans, which are diabolically brilliant.
One of these days, Obama is going to outwit himself, then we’re all in trouble, except for the doomsday preppers who have now realized they should have stockpiled more Depends for all the wetting of themselves in glee that’s going on.
In the meantime, we know that all of this was being planned for a long time. Since 1960 at least. So the reason behind all this is gay Indonesian Kenyan Obama married to a transgendered man Michelle running an abortion clinic in the basement of the White House and, somehow… BENGHAZI!
19The perfect storm, timing for the TPGOP with elections just days away. They will ride this horse hard, and it will only get worse between now and Nov 4. ATTN: Sane people. You MUST get out and vote.
20I’ve called the White House Hotline and suggested Gov. Rick Perry be placed on the “Do Not Fly List”. God only knows, he is infected with something.
21Angelo, did you really do that? hahahaha.
22Laughing at g. for being so hilarious with so few words.
23If the kids use better hygiene, bet we see a net DROP in communicable diseases…
Not as good as vaccinations, but better….
24I have the solution. All schools should be equipped like an out patient surgery center and all teachers must have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles.
Oh, wait, that only works with girls.
25Old Fart, agreed! Hygiene is important.
But, as you can probably guess, I am not done with the anti VAXes fundies who place other children at risk for diseases that were once gone; polio for example.
If anything good can come from the fright right, let it be universal health care, paid sick leave, family sick leave and an end to mandatory school attendance, so sick kids aren’t sent to school to infect others with their colds and flu.
I dream that sick people stay home, but not being a total dreamer take a heavy vitamin and mineral dose before encountering the rude and sneezing. We take the natural one invented by a couple of school teachers. (not sure about mentioning brand names here)
26Ralph Wiggam, girls and gays according to the right wing, who were apparently hatched and find closets to be full protection.
27So the Republicans (I’m looking at you, John McCain) called for an Ebola “czar.” Now that Obama’s appointed one, it took about five minutes before they started slamming his choice. And this from the same people who have prevented the president from appointing a U.S. Surgeon General because his nominee made the observation that guns can be hazardous to your health. And, Rand Paul, an ophthalmologist who should know better, says you can get Ebola easily from someone at a cocktail party. The Stoopid just keeps on comin’.
28Why would you think an ophthalmologist should know better? One might, but it’s not part of their field of expertise. The problem with Rand Paul is that he doesn’t know where his expertise stops and someone else’s begins, so he flaps his mouth about everything. Especially if he can say something against someone he’s politically opposed to.
—
29Whoever told the health-care workers in Texas Presbyterian how they were to self-monitor for symptoms screwed up…none of them should have been traveling, certainly not in commercial transport, and certainly not out of state/out of country. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Yes, some of them already had tickets, I’m sure. But wrong.
Elizabeth, Baby Paul had to create his own ‘certification’ scheme to be an ophthalmologist, not so sure about his academic credentials being any better.
Crying airlines, cruise line and morons in Congress have not stepped up to refund the health care workers for their cancelled travel, possessions, etc. Wonder if Texas Presbyterian, having screwed up big time, is giving paid leave to the nurses and staff who did their jobs with no help from the for profit hospital.
30“…requiring the kids wash their hands twice a day because of Ebola.”
Is there enough water left in Texas for everyone to wash their hands several times a day? I thought “Fracking” was the state’s priority for fresh water?
Meanwhile that Ebola contaminated waste is piling up….somewhere….an empty hospital room, at the Texas-Louisana border. Maybe they can pump that down a few fracking wells?
31It’s probably an unpopular stance, but I think a little more caution and a little less humor might be called for in this particular case. What comes to mind is the Spanish Flu before WWI and the polio issue when I was a child. There are some serious health issues involved in this no matter how minor the Ebola outbreak may seem to anyone. There is no reason to panic but there is every reason for our health care providers to learn how to deal with a virus which is deadly and about which we do not know nearly enough. The fact that we have only 9 beds in four medical centers in this country that are equipped to treat patients with Ebola ( and other virulent diseases ) is appalling. Right now, four of those beds are occupied.
32I’m paraphrasing a tweet a friend sent my way here:
“Thus far, the only cases of Ebola contracted in the US came about as a result of helping people, so, relax Republicans you are in the clear….”
33Ellen Childress, as you point out, there is no humor in death, especially needless death. The Tea Bags and Republicans would like to Squirrel, Benghazi, Squirrel, cheat and claw their way into relevance.
However, fact is, if the for profit hospitals do their jobs, there is no problem. Now the government the RWNJs want to work needs to do something?
How about they STFU and demand their Congress critters vote a Surgeon General and allocate funding to the agencies they defunded?
34The GOP members of the current Congress don’t want to be useful in this crisis. They just want full control of the government, after which they’ll take their money and do nothing.
What they should do, instead, is yes, confirm the Surgeon General appointment immediately, allocate funding not only to those agencies, but the Public Health Service, and a slush fund to pay for the costs so far of treating the Ebola patients. Transportation companies should be minimally compensated if at all for returning paid-for tickets to those who should not travel. (“Would you rather refund the money or take a chance that one of them will travel because they’ve already paid and then you’ll have to pull a plane out of service and pay to have it decontaminated?”) Arrangements should be made (however works best in that location) for individuals told to isolate themselves during monitoring to grocery-shop by phone and have groceries delivered. All should receive full pay for the days lost to work, and be assured that their jobs will remain when they return.
But will any GOP politicians show that much sense?
35@Elizabeth—In order to be an ophthalmologist (I used to work for one) you first have to have an M.D. degree. Maybe Rand Paul fell asleep during his microbiology courses. Or maybe he just wants to gin up the base like all the rest of them with fear and paranoia.
36Just so you know JJ, the Supremes upheld Texas’ Voter I.D. laws.
That’s the kind of stuff that will push me over the edge.
37Couldn’t been said better!
“So far every case of Ebola in this country got it by helping people. So relax Republicans, you’re in the clear.”
38Tina Dupuy on Twitter
Perhaps we should start a rumor that ebola is spread by blood and by touching money. Though I suppose Perry has guys who touch his dirty money for him.
39Ted DickHead Cruz was making his hateful rounds this Sunday with his FEARBOLA and FEARISIS spitting hate and IGNORANCE as usual. It is true that the hospital in Dallas and the CDC made major mistakes in the handling of the person infected with Ebola travelling from Africa. But it is also true that he and his teabagger friends cut the CDC budget and blocked the nominee for Surgeon General.
When 2 people out of 360,000,000 people (0.00000055% of the population) get infected calling for bans on flights and spending $146 million is a brutal disproportionate effort which is more than insane.
Then he went out to say Obama is not giving the Kurds arms directly and not allowing them to sell oil. Well the reason is for fear that ISIS would get the arms and money from oil sales, just like they got the arms from the Iraqi government placed in various cities in the first place.
This teabagger and his father Ted Crazy Cruz and his father Rafael Even more Crazy Cruz are in fact fanatical lunatics who live in a fantasy world of hate. These type of human trash are willing to create panic and USE the people for their own political power purposes.
Ted Cruz places himself to a level lower than his own feces he throws around like the animal from the zoo he has become.
Dr. Oto Cantu
40@ Texas t park Trash- I’m not sure an M.D. degree means the same thing when a winger holds it as when a normal person does. Wingers have this tendency to only hear what they wish to hear and I’d presume that works in all areas. Rand Paul and the Cruzer both have motor mouths and they generally forget to put their brain in gear before firing up their mouth.
41Dr. Cantu, the family and friends of Mr. Duncan have not contracted Ebola and today is the final day of their quarantine period. Two facts are reinforced, Ebola is not highly contagious in its early stages and it can be controlled with the effective wearing of PPE in the final stages.
Compare the thousands of cases treated in West Africa with minimal contagion to healthcare workers who often had little in the way of clean water and resources while two nurses treating one patient at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital contracted the disease. That’s a massive fail for private hospitals and our supposed American “exceptional-ism.”
Pappy Cruz and Daffy Cruz, Jr. are Dominionists, so we can only hope they board the next passing meteor craze.
