The Walking, Talking Reason to Overturn Citizens United
The latest campaign finance reports this week are showing that Elon Musk spent a quarter of a BILLION DOLLARS to get Trump elected, including $40 million into his “lottery” getting people to sign a petition to “protect the Constitution” and $20 million to fund the ironically named RBGPac that attempted to equate Trump’s bragging about ending Roe v. Wade with RBG’s position (hint: that’s a lie). He also cut $75 million in checks to his America Pac. In all, Musk spent $277 million in the 2024 election. He’s also threatening to pay for primary challenges to any Republican who doesn’t bend the knee to Trump. By spending this kind of money, and his continuous presence at Mar a Lago since the election, Musk has become the walking, talking reason to overturn Citizens United, the idiotic 2010 ruling where a 5 to 4 Republican majority claimed that money is speech and the laughable assertion that the presence of massive amounts of money would not corrupt our elections.
Normal people knew that the logical result of this ridiculous decision would be massive corruption, and that is exactly what has happened in the years since, with Musk bringing that corruption out of the shadows into plain sight. AND, the problem was magnified this year as he piled into the election too late for those amounts of money to be reported until AFTER the election was over and the damage was done.
I am not laboring under any illusion that the Fuckheads in Congress will do a goddam thing about it, but there it is, in plain sight for us all to see.
Dylan said it: ‘Money doesn’t talk, it swears.’
1“The Art of Buying an Election” by Elon Musk
2And Alito says “That was my plan…”
3Trumpf failed to overturn an election in 2021, musk succeeded in 2024.
4I wonder how much money Elon has received from we the people for his Tesla, SpaceX and other business startups?
5Practically everything Musk did to become the world’s richest man involved having his hand in the taxpayers pocket. Using that admission to Stanford to get a Visa and then not attending informs me he was always lacking in any kind of ethics or morals. Perfect match for tfg. Americans think he is the 2nd coming. we are locked in to Citizens United until the spell is broken.
6Grandma@5 – The Department of Energy loaned Tesla $465 million in 2010 when the company was going down the drain. The loan saved the company. At SpaceX, the federal government has paid the company $3 billion, and has let contracts for billions more. Behind only Israel and the defense industry, Musk is the largest individual recipient of federal money in US history.
7With Citizens United, Shelby County v. Holder and Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council, the United States is fucked. Not to mention the presidential immunity ruling. Good luck getting a super-majority to overturn these rulings.
As a side note, DOGE should start by abandoning the ISS. That would save some money, eh?
8Ed@ – SpaceX gets paid $260 million for each trip to the ISS. Musk is NOT going to propose cutting that expense. He’s picking winners and losers. He’s one of the winners.
