The Supremes
Those sumbitches gutted the Voting Rights Act. I do not care what shiny face anybody tries to put on it, the opinion is an egg-suckin’ dog.
They struck down the map of which jurisdictions were covered because of past discrimination. Now they are going to let congress decide which, if any, jurisdictions might discriminate. Oh yeah, like congress can agree on lunch time.
The opinion says that racial discrimination is over. You know, because we haven’t seen any racism at all since Barack Obama was elected President of the United States of Damn America.
Clarence Thomas says he not only would do away with Section 4, he thinks Section 5 is also unconstitutional. That man is a great disturbance in the force. I swear he is.
I know we have a bunch of lawyers here, so please feel free to correct me if you have a better spin on this than a dirty ole egg sucking dog.
UPDATE: Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is positively drooling over the Supreme Court decision. The jerk can hardly wait to stop citizens from voting.
You know how they pull this stuff off don’t you? They keep everyone distracted by taking an hour to answer the phone at the airlines or the IRS or whatever. If you’re about to miss your plane you don’t worry unduly about voting rights right that minute. My husband spent an HOUR on hold to get my ticket straightened out. I wonder how often Clarence Thomas has to worry about catching his plane.
1Clarence Thomas is the exception that proves the rule when it
2comes to affirmative action.
What we need to work toward …….. is Hillary 2016…. and make sure that no more Supreme Court Justices are appointed by Republican presidents.
This Court has been a total disaster when it comes to protecting the rights and freedoms of the American people.
With “Citizens United” they gave corporations more rights than most ordinary human people enjoy.
JJ, I’m past the “stand all day” point in my life, but I’m with Wendy Davis in spirit today, and should she run for Governor, I’ll be with her all the way.
3Sorry Mama.
Clarence Thomas and this buck dancing, klan wagon bunch sucks more than flying roaches in a house full of sleeping mouth breathers. I’m so mad—I swear I could spit.
For what has happened in Texas to women and other women in insane red states, what our legislators are trying to do in Ohio to women and what these five men have done to voting rights for minorities in this country—has made me ill. Bastards. (Again–sorry Mama).
4I have a confession to make. I actually read the Affordable Health Care Act before it was passed and then later I read decision from the Supremes. Actually, it was John Roberts’ decision. If you have enough alcohol/personal gumption or whatever, I recommend that you get this thing in your hands for one helluva good giggle. The man throws every known relevant law into the stew that cooked his decision and it comes out actually damn funny. It is the written legal version of the old directions to the running bow-line knot. You know, the one where the rabbit runs down into the hole . . . oh, well. I can just see the Honorable Justice loping around his office as he dictates cuz this sure could not have been written by a sittin’ down man! I have no plans to read this decision on voting rights. I can already smell it from here! Post-racial America, my lace covered fanny!
As for the rest of that crew such as Alito and Thomas, we want our money back – – – so we can use it to fund Hillary’s campaign!
5Lyndon Johnson must be spinning in his grave.
6Thomas = OREO
7I find myself in the awkward position of agreeing with the Court majority that things have changed since 1965 – there are some places in the south that don’t need VRA oversight any more, and some places in the north that sure as hell do. (South Boston, anybody?) But this decision comes at an awful time, given the string of voter ID laws that are waiting to sail through, and I can’t imagine how Congress is ever going to agree on new standards.
On the bright side, I’m just going out to vote for Ed Markey to fill John Kerry’s old seat, and I think most of the rest of the state is doing the same thing, so at least the Senate will stay as blue as it is.
8I just hope that in a couple of decades John Roberts gets the historical legacy that he so richly deserves–right up there with Joseph McCarthy.
9We need a Democratic tidal wave to wipe out this and other conservative slanted Supreme Court decisions. We can’t wait for 2016, this has to start in 2014, despite all the gerrymandering. It’s so disheartening to see the progress made in civil and womens’ rights over the last decades erased.
10Having supported the election and re-election of Barack Obama I do have some buyer’s remorse over a growing list of issues. That does not mean that given his opponents, in retrospect, I would have changed my support and vote. It means that my list of disappointments is growing and growing with no relief in sight.
The one hope that I cling to is the possibility that during his tenure he will have the opportunity to replace one of the five sitting conservative judges. A number of their decisions have dealt blows to our democracy. I believe when history looks back at the first part of the 21st century these five judges, along with the presidency G.W. Bush, will be characterized by a large clothespin attached to Uncle Sam’s nose.
11I would ask us all to start naming names of the Justices responsible for these obviously partisan decisions such as this: Roberts, Alito, Kennedy, Scalia and Thomas.
Those are the people backing the corporations, undoing social justice protections such as voter’s rights, protection from sexual harrassment, equlaity opportunity, et cetera in misguided attempts to protect corporations and whites. They need to own the damage they cause, own it by their inidividual names, not by a blanket term, the Surpreme Court.
Name them. Do not allow them to hide. We need to educate everyone that these five men are ignoring precedent,, ignoring logic and not considering the social consequences of what they are doing.
12Acronym for their names: K-RATS use it
13BTW, I truly believe Justie Thomas suffers from Imposter’s Synndrome. His insecurities make him want to destroy anything that might be construed to have helped him. He was once for affirmative action, and now is not. He wants desperately to be accepted by the white culture that once put him down. How sad, but also tragic for everyone else.
14@ks sunflower says….
Thomas knows he’s not qualified, and neither is Roberts or Alito.
We just HAVE to make sure….. this never happens again.
This……. is why Bush…… appointed……. Roberts…… as ….. Chief Justice.
“Mission Accomplished.”.
15We have been taken back to the Jim Crow era, people died for the right to vote, they were attacked and sprayed with water hoses. This is a republican dream, it also ties into all of the other stuff they are doing, like the womens clinics they are trying to shut down. I’m in NC and it has become a nightmare.
16I am asking everyone to please vote in the mid terms, we need a democratic congress so we can right the wrongs that are happening, also we need to keep the senate!
In the same week when Paula Deen showed us we still don’t live in a post racial society, the Supreme Court tries to argue we do. “Look” they seem to say, “we let Clarence vote, so what’s the problem?”
17When dozens of states are passing voter ID laws, limiting the amount of time for early voting, putting undo restrictions on voter registration, etc. it’s important to remember that all of our legal options eventually end up in the hands of these five assholes. No other way to put it. Five assholes decide the fate of free and equal protection of the right to vote.
There are few things those of us living in red states can do to stop the tidal wave of bigoted ignorance in action, and our court system has little to offer in the way of justice in these cases.
It’s pretty obvious that the GOP sees voter suppression as their last, best hope for survival as a political party, and we’ll get a huge dose of it now and forever more.
Anyone who thinks it’s okay to sit out elections because it doesn’t matter which side wins ought to have their asses kicked up around their chins, because THIS is why it matters.
18Roberts feels the VRA is no longer needed because so many minorities were able to vote in the last election. Duh!! They were able to vote in large numbers because the VRA prevented the many state proposed changes that would have limited voting. It’s like my bipolar friend who is able to function normally while on medication saying, “I don’t need medication anymore because look how well I’m doing.”
19I’m going to eat Klondike bars and drink bourbon and cry. Then I’m gonna ill-wish 5 justices (ha, oxymoron) just as hard as my little heathen heart can. Is it time to take to the streets yet?
Hippie in the Hollar
20It’s all part of ALEC’s agenda. We were asleep at the switch and they saw an opening. Now, we have to slam the door shut and nail it closed. Vote Democratic in huge numbers and keep voting that way. We’ve got a lot of making up to do after giving the 2010 elections to the Republicans.
The Republican Party: Destroying the American Middle Class fir more than 40 years.
21Preclearance is the only thing that kept Texas somewhat democratic. Now…..
22Whoa, Nelly. Gotta say something about this, but, no, there is no way I could translate anything this fool comes up with.
I was an exchange professor in Moscow during the 70s and I must have been blessed because I never encountered this guy. Perhaps he skipped Moscow U in favor of the Vodka courses or stayed in the berioska stores where you could buy Johnny Walker
Black duty free.
I lived in the Soviet Union for a bit over six months and the Russian friends I had scoffed at this allegation about the state taking children away. Truth be told, the state didn’t want them. They could not afford them.
This story was an offshoot of the Nazi regime encouraging kids to turn in their parents for ” political aberration”.
JJ, I fear for my beloved Texas.
23Dear TexasTrailerParkTrash: That noise you hear coming from LBJ’s grave is not just spinning. He’s digging a tunnel and he is pissed!
24You know darn well Greg Abbott is already developing literacy tests for voters. Oh yes, we will shortly be back to the days of poll taxes and perhaps separate but equal water fountains in the court houses of the State of Texas. Clarence Thomas will be OK with that.
25I read this recently and it bears repeating: Should the voters select the politicians or the politicians select the voters?
26We have a legislature passed ID law up here in Badgerland that was held up on appeal in the courts. The ID law will no doubt go into effect after this ruling. Countless voters would have been disenfranchised in 2012 if the law had not been appealed. After all these years, this decision of the Court is so sad.
27I am STILL proud to have been on the Edmund Pettus Bridge! I have faith in the American people to see through this, and go to the polls in 2014, and do the right thing! Go Wendy!!!
