The Logical Result from One Party Rule in Texas – Freezing in the Dark

January 05, 2017 By: El Jefe Category: Sumbitches

Thanks, Republicans for your great leadership.  Shutting down Lite-Up Texas, which helped poor Texans keep the lights and heat on was a GREAT idea, right?

  1. Got stuck like that many decades ago. My response for all of us in the dark was “praise the Lord!” The “keepers” of the light folded and turned them back on. This wasn’t a trivial situation either, just like the one in Texas. Ya know, I always thought Texas was a state and not a feudal serfdom. Maybe I’m wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time.

Yee haw for Dubya and ‘compassionate’ conservatism. Another few bucks saved for the corporate moochers.

The Republicans remind me so much of a Dickens character we visit with every Christmas:

“At this festive season of the year, Mr Scrooge, … it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.”
    “Are there no prisons?”
    “Plenty of prisons…”
“And the Union workhouses.” demanded Scrooge. “Are they still in operation?”
    “Both very busy, sir…”
“Those who are badly off must go there.”
“Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.”
“If they would rather die,” said Scrooge, “they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.”

  4. Yeah, “compassionate” conservatives to distinguish them from all the regular ones, whose attitude is that of you’re poor or sick, you’re a loser and you might as well freeze or overheat and reduce the surplus population.

  5. It’s a familiar story from Greek mythology:

The gods (in this case Republican lawmakers) take fire away from humans, over a petty grievance.

But humanity had a champion: Prometheus lit a torch from the sun and brought it back again to man. It could happen again.

In the meantime, Republicans start their cars, parked in a heated garage, from a key fob, to warm up the climate controlled heating system before they drive away.

  6. I’m thinking ol’ Greg Abbott must be proud as Hell the way all his poors are suffering to make him look good.

At least Scrooge reformed, after being visited by Marley and the 3 ghosts. The Republican Scrooges show no repentance at all. One can only wish that they would wind up like Marley, clanking around in chains as an object lesson of the punishment for greed and inhumanity.

I have done intake at our rotating winter homeless shelter 1-2x/week, since we opened 9 years ago. When we are at the fire-department cap for a host site, I have seen guests give up a guaranteed spot for another person who didn’t have a reservation, because the other person was frail or vulnerable or just got out of the hospital. And yet our guests are treated with contempt and scorn as worthless dust by the greedy hypocrites running the country now. I would a million times prefer the company and respect of our guests at the shelter, than Abbott, Patrick, Trump, or any of their kleptocratic horde.

    Now that is SAD.

  9. treehugger–Perfect. Too bad our new leader doesn’t read.

I am so sad to see the death of Horatio Alger–he was the author of the myth of work hard/do well/realize success. Now the story is more 1 Tin Soldier:

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of heaven,
You can justify it in the end–

Only I wonder if we’ll even have a tin soldier to ride away.

Didn’t I read recently that Texas, either the state or some dreadful school district has defunded special education? Whatta fine place!

Too bad that all the fine Texas leaders are mostly dead. What the anti Christian rethuglicans will reap is hate. And in gun heavy Texas, that’s not good for their health. But Lady Karma and Queen Nemesis always win. Always

  12. From the State that proudly brought us Enron and Ken Lay. This reminded me of one of their internal e-mails about what they were doing to California seniors, “Our heart just goes out to them, honestly.”

    12
  13. I’m pretty sure that “compassionate conservatives” are only expected to be compassionate to white millionaires.

    13
  14. Surely there are some powers that be in TX who could at least publicly pretend to help the poors while funneling said monies to the utility companies. Ya know, some “look at us we are so generous (while stabbing them poors in the back)” types. What a missed opportunity. Yep, the Rs are stoopids.
