I dunno. I think I’ll title this:  I’ve Heard Of Covering Your Butt, But Covering Your Winkie is New To Me.

The only guy not trying to cover his winkie is the one who hasn’t seen his in a decade.

Are these guys in the Governor’s office? Jeez, you Texan’s sure
do take your guns seriously. And, JJ, I think your caption is exactly right. Ironic, isn’t it that all these sexless men are “protecting” their tiny winkies while standing in the Governor’s personal gun collection room. It’s like some odd format of respect that they cover theirs. Of course, I could be wrong, but
somehow I think this is right. Maybe this stance is called a . . . umm . . . Barrel Salute?

Oh Dear Heavens. Some one really should tell them the Manly Stance is with your hands clasped BEHIND your back. Hands clasped in FRONT is the Preacher Stance. Unless you’re going to be leading service down at the First Self-Righteous Church of Plano, you shouldn’t oughtta’ stand like that.

  3. With h/t to Gail Collins:

Some commentators have attributed the whole open-carry phenomenon to white American men trying to work out their insecurities. We’ve got to stop blaming white men for everything. Really, they’ve contributed a lot to the country. Still, you can’t help but notice that there’s a certain demographic consistency to the people who are making a scene over their right to display arms.

  4. There is just something about this pix that reminds me of the one about the white men gathered together to ban abortion in TX. Could I possibly be seeing some of the same faces?

  5. AliceBeth says:

This how your governor dresses to sign laws? And this is where he signs laws, in the place that will benefit financially from this law??? Interesting.

  6. Old white men never know what to do with their hands if they’re not carrying a gun. Thus the Preacher Stance.

  7. Fred Farklestone says:

Here are two well known groups tha their existence revolves around guns.
Which one of the two would you want teaching your family how to handle any gun?
Also, name each one of them.

    1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
This is the primary rule of gun safety. Never pointing a gun at yourself or others ensures that it will not cause harm if it goes off. When outdoors, point the gun toward the ground or towards the target. If you are indoors, be mindful that a bullet can penetrate ceilings, floors, walls, windows, and doors. Use common sense to dictate the safest direction.

    2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
When holding a gun, rest your finger on the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Do not touch the trigger until you are ready to fire.

    3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
When you pick up a gun, immediately engage the safety device and remove the magazine before opening the action and checking the chamber(s). If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.

    Or this group!
    1. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
    2. Never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.
    3. Keep finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
    4. Keep weapon on safe until you intend to fire.

    7
  8. Mah Fellow Murkuhn says:

That stance is the standard one for praying in church, which is probably the case here. Watching the governor sign this bill is a religious experience for some, in both the positive and negative sense.

    8
  9. I wonder if they’ve all really thought this open carry thing through. Does it also apply to a black man who might be walking through these guys’ neighborhood openly carrying a weapon? What do you think would happen in that circumstance? Would these idjits uphold his “right” to do that? Yeah. We all know the answer to these questions.

  10. Fred Farklestone says:

You want to cause a stampede anywhere in Texas, just have these guys show up!

    Arrest the goobernor for pandering.

    1pander
    verb pan·der \ˈpan-dər\
: to do or provide what someone wants or demands even though it is not proper, good, or reasonable

I am gonna be laughing this whole long hard day thinking about this picture and the article. THANKS.

    @AliceBeth…my thoughts also.

  14. Sandridge says:

That venue looks like the Cabelas in Kyle, just south of Austin, anybody know if that’s it?

I’ll admit, I do spend some money with Cabelas (I get the highroller leather-bound catalogs). They’re RWer’s for sure, but they have some stuff I need; rarely go to the stores, the wingnut atmosphere is stifling (and listening to them it’s hard to keep from busting out laughing).

Cabelas gets lots of government subsidies, BTW— $114 million per the website below…and that’s probably low.

Here’s a handy website to look up corporate welfare subsidy information:

  15. AliceBeth says:

@TexasTrailerParkTrash, they absolutely did not think this through. They will come undone when some non-white shooter does something they should approve. It will be something to see.

Oooops, dang c and p malfunction,

Direct TX subsidy link above should be:

  19. maryelle says:

Alice Beth, you zeroed in on the whole point: Republicans are owned by the gun industry and that’s why we can’t get common sense gun regulation in this country. I can’t laugh at this. It’s profoundly wrong.

    19
  20. Don’t why Gov. Abbott is wearing a Boy Scout shirt Alice Beth. The whole image is just plain weird.

    20
  21. Grace, they are assuming a reverent stance in the presence of their Lord.

  22. SteveThe Returned says:

Gotta love the guv’s timing: blatantly pandering to the open carry loons, immediately after that lunatic shoots up Dallas.

    22
  23. @Fred Farklestone
I dont know about the first set, but I had something similar to the second set burned into my brain in Arizona. I call it The First Gospel according to Jeff, and I am a believer.

All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.

Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. (For those who insist that this particular gun is unloaded, see Rule 1.)

Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target. This is the Golden Rule. Its violation is directly responsible for about 60 percent of inadvertent discharges.

Identify your target, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you have not positively identified.

  24. Angelo_Frank says:

Calling it a salute to the “genius” of the country’s founding fathers, Gov. Greg Abbott on Saturday signed legislation allowing Texans with licenses to openly tote their handguns in a hip or shoulder holster.

The signing of the open-carry bill, House Bill 910 by state Rep. Larry Phillips, R-Sherman, came at Red’s Indoor Range, a popular gun store and shooting range in Pflugerville. Abbott said he would also sign legislation later in the day that requires the state’s public universities and colleges to allow handguns on campus buildings and in dorms.

  26. UmptyDump says:

Texas has now legalized overt intimidation by the armed against the unarmed. Stand 10 feet away from one of these crazies – call him out for being the asshole he is – and he will shoot you and claim that you put him in fear of his life. Courage, my friends.

  27. e platypus onion says:

In Des Moines, iowa a female cop shot an unarmed man through her squad car window. She claims he charged her, another cop said he was “walking with purpose” whatever that means. Anyway, one unarmed civilian is dead(white guy I’m guessing) and cops can’t get their stories straight.

  28. Marge Wood says:

Cabela’s is prettier than that. Seriously. It looks like a pawn shop or the basement or something.
    and
CABELA’s gets government subsidies? For WHAT?
