Thanks, Governor

The Quorum Report is a news aggregator and breaking news breaker. They are by subscription only and are the go-to political news in Texas. Harvey Kronberg runs the joint.

They don’t have breaking news every day, but today they did.

Remember death panels?  Well, the Governor isn’t bothered by that now.

By the way, Texas ranks 47th among the states for Covid19 testing.  Way to go, Gov.

  1. Searching for confirmation – not reported as of yet in any other news sources. Is anyone able to verify this report?

  2. Remember when the U.S. had “the best medical system in the world?”

  3. Steve from Beaverton says:

Unfortunately the legitimate medical community is not only fighting the pandemic but administrations like Trumps and governors like Abbott. To that point, a whistleblower complaint was just issued by the ousted Trump administration head of developing vaccines to fight Coronavirus. He cited several Trump administration efforts to silence him about his pushback against corruption in awarding business to cronies for untested and unsafe (and ineffective) medications among other issues. Of course now the death projections are double the current numbers, and Abbott, Trump and followers need to pay the price. Lock em up for willful malpractice.

We always knew they weren’t death adverse when they kept pushing guns&ammo. And the anti-choicers won’t care.

If you’re born, you’re able to be damned…

  5. Jane & PKM says:

Magic Mike threw in a $million or more plus some of his own resources to assist Governor Cuomo with developing a system for contract tracing. NY certainly needs that as do the rest of us. If their system is good, we can easily predict which states will adopt it. Meanwhile individual states are developing their own tests. First ten states to “flatten the curve” need to send their bills to Covidiot* 45 for payment. Real hope coming from some state efforts, “tots & slayers” coming from the feds at usury prices.

This needs to be on the nightly broadcast news just like Dennis Bonnen’s recording. Let people – all of them – hear it!

  7. I listened to Abbott’s 3:40 answer, and I find it completely disingenuous. He sets up a “straw-man” argument, namely, that we cannot get the transmission rate to 0, so we should simply reopen without regard to the fatality rate of the virus. Essentially, he says, “We live with the flu and don’t disrupt business during flu season, so we will have to learn to live with this virus.” As we are all well aware, the CFR for covid-19 is at least 10x that of the flu, and it is particularly lethal for those over 60.

Abbott rightly identifies that the shelter-in-place policy kept the epidemic from spreading widely, then says that using “safe-distancing” and face masks – without the stay home component of the restrictions, will constrain the spread of covid-19. Unfortunately, every single model shows that by Aug 31 this approach will kill somewhere between 65,000 and 130,000 Texans. (If extended to the US as a whole, 1.5-2m people will die by 31 Aug)

While Abbott uses the term “scientific” multiple times, his use is completely inconsistent with the actual science that must guide the policy response to this pandemic. Every reputable epidemiologist believes there must be:

    – lots of testing. Currently, Texas ranks 39th out of 51, and did very little testing until recently
    – isolation of infected individuals and groups.
    – contact tracing.

These are the facts, and they should be undisputed. R’s in general and the Gov and Lt. Gov in particular are very happy to ignore or distort facts and science when they get in the way of their political beliefs.

  8. Thanks for the link J.J.
He is pretty slick though. After the admissions of facts in the beginning, by the end, he’s foxplained about how the precautions taken by his shutdown rules have gotten the rate of new cases down to an acceptable level. And by easing some restrictions “intelligently”, this rate can be maintained.
    Mischief managed.
Couple of teeny little pesky facts though.
He’s the voice of reason by stating that getting the transmission rate to zero was never realistic, as if that possibility had been a given. But to my knowledge, f**king trump is the only one who claimed that.
But the old voice of reason trick kinda takes a ding when it’s pointed out that even though the rates dropped somewhat, they’re back up to the highest levels they’ve ever been at. Probably because people have been following the restrictions less as time goes on.
    But what the hell.
    It’s the economy stupid.

  10. They just don’t give a rat’s ass,do they? They’re all alike, these GOP politicos. Given a choice a saving lives and saving their money, it’s a no brainer. I am seeing this stuff from some of my few remaining GOP friends. Let their 401K accounts start zooming again and they’ll be just fine with grandma choking on her own snot in the nursing home.
