So What’s The Deal With These Guys and Spelling
I think the Tea Party folks have been put under a spell.
A spelling spell.
Texas lost a good State Senator when Mario Gallegos died after it was too late to take his name off the ballot. R. W. Bray ran against him and lost to a dead man. Big time. This is a very Democratic and Hispanic district.
R.W. is an African American ultra conservative who used to be an aid for Houston City Councilwoman Helena Brown. Now, I’m not saying that you could have Helena Brown committed, but if she accidentally wandered into a mental health facility, she could not prove her way out. Her last in a long line of stunts was paying $3,000 of tax money for refrigerator magnets.
Anyway, one of our customers, who wants to remain anonymous because she’s not bulletproof, sent me an email she got from a Houston Republican.
I am going to re-print it here. I did not change a damn word.
Dear fellow Republicans,I come to you today to send you a quick but very important Email. As we all know now the general election on November 6, 2012 did not turn out in our favor. The next morning if left us scratching our heads and asking what did we do wrong. I think we can all agree now the Democrats had a better ground game and a better get out the vote then we did. The question we must all ask our self’s now is how can show we have learned from the last election. Senate District 6 has never been won by a conservative. We are now faced with a special election in the coming weeks. Mr. R. W. Bray ran in the general election and got over 38,000 votes. Mr. Gallegos got 93,000 votes. As of today we have 2 democrats and 1 conservative running. The democrats are not currently attacking Bray they are attacking them self’s. They are splitting the vote amongst them self’s. With the rumors of a 3rd democrat jumping in the race. Turn out will be low and the vote will be split. Now, Bray needs our help we have to turn the 38,000 back out plus more. There are a couple simple things i think we can do such as the following:– Make 10 phone calls– Walk a block in the district– Send the campaign $10.00– Help pass signs outThese are just a few things we can do to help put Mr. Bray over the top. With a victory like this we would leave the Democrats scratching their heads and let them know Texas will not turn blue in 2014. We have to show them we will take our county back. Below I am including contact information to the campaign please forward this e mail to everyone you know! Let’s get the vote out and win Senate District 6 for the first time!Brays Email : rasuali.bray@gmail.comPolicy Director: Chris@carmonalawoffice.comCampaign Admin: latrista@gmail.comFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/bray4senate
I hope they have fun with them self’s.
Thanks to anonymous for the heads up.
OMFG! We ain’t got no corner on illiterati in the true South.
1Ah, a Right to Work state. Too bad they don’t value their right to an education (unless they have also ceded that duty to the church, in which case they are being taught from only the Bible, which never once uses the term their selves, them selves or those selves, at least as far as this self remembers her Bible study from Sunday School.) Funny how the very people who cannot speak or write properly in English want it to be the only legal language in America. Of course, those same folks never saw the need to learn a second one, nor even admit that there are others countries in this world, most of whom produce far better spellers than the Tea Party does.
2Electing one opportunistic political hack to a state senate is going to help ‘take our country back’ (whatever the heck that means)? Secede and get it over with and the sooner the better.
3What school did them self’s go to?
4While the occasional typo and misspelling are to be overlooked, the incorrect apostrophes are worthy of the death penalty.
5We elected a dead guy once, Mel Carnahan, because the alternative was John Ashcroft. I was happy, then Bush made him AG and well, the rest as they say is history. Dang I guess I should have kept that to my own self or is that selve I get so confused.
6They sure do bray loudly. Interesting that the one thing they don’t believe they need to do is change what they are offering.
They never learn. In California, no Republican currently holds state office. And the Dems just won 2/3 plus majorities in both legislative branches. The Repubs–or what’s left of them–have announced that they realize they can no longer afford to be the party of aging white men. To implement that fix, they picked Jim Brulte. And yes, he is an aging white man.
7Uh, Juanita, sorry to have to tell you this, but you just proved the maxim that any post about spelling is going to have a spelling error. The word in the second paragraph should be spelled “aide” when it means a person who assists someone else.
Having said that, a letter sent to a lot of people in a business context should be proofread more carefully than a casual blog post. Also, I agree with BarbinDC; the rules for apostrophes aren’t that hard.
8I was nearly speechless when I arrived at SMU for law school and had the opportunity to read some of the material submitted by fellow L-1’s.
Everyone of those quasi-literates is now a Texas republican lawyer and politically active opposing gender equity, tax fairness and minority rights.
9Myself, I have no words.
10My head started spinning when reading the e-mail, but your comments and those of the readers made me settle down. I agree with BarbinDC about the apostrophes errors being worthy of the death penalty. I grew up in Texas, went to schools in Texas through the 6th grade. I learned to spell and speak correctly – except for my tendency to use slang. We need our politicians to be smarter than we are – not dumber. And yes, spelling, syntax and grammar DO count!

12It’s no wonder that people other than the Tea Party are so ready to believe Tea Party members are actually less intelligent than the average.
Although I have to say even my agent, a liberal in NYC, makes some errors I cringe at. (He is 20 years younger than I am, and I’ve noticed that many people in that range are almost afraid to use “me.” So we get horrible constructions–here as well as there–that avoid “me” but produce thing like “They gave it to I and Janice.”) Still, I don’t think he has ever committed “them self’s” and I agree with BarbinDC that the apostrophes deserve the death penalty.
13While reading this, my brain said “Selve, scratch our head!”
14The Tea Party certainly is not selfless. That e-mail has me looking for a red pencil.
15Oh dear….sounds like the people around these here parts of Tennessee~
16We gots together among our self’s today and shook our head’s in wunderment at the lack of edukayshun of tea partier’s. R they all pourly homeskooled or did they leeve skool in the 7the gradde?
17Funny that my children were taught the proper use of apostrophes in 4th grade (on up).
I think I understand the reasoning behind the TX legislature’s desires to decimate the education budget. They want to ensure that there are fewer people that will call them out on their horrific grammar and spelling. “Someone pointed out my screw-ups and made me a laughingstock? Eliminate them and anyone who taught them how to point that out!”
18Personally, I’m thinking we should vote more dead politicians into office. It seems a step up from the obstructionistic do-nothing robots or zombies we have in office now.
